  1. The senior people aren't used to tour and are likely less prepared for it than many band people. I have seen Bucs. Drill was good for senior. Not likely top 20 in DCI

    Wow...

Your seriously saying that a band director that rehearses with his/her students one week a summer, then a bunch of a afternoon and evening rehearsals is somehow more prepared to teach a drum corps.

I would say it simply comes down to the person. In some cases your right, but in some your wrong.

Although to balance out your point. Mike Madonia who worked for Spirit this summer went on his first tour in 2005 as Pioneer's brass caption head and this year on the brass staff for Spirit, having not marched drum corps nor touring previously. This is also one of the reasons he is a wonderful instructor.

On the flip side, I would stay on the side of not making a blanket statement that a band director is more capable than a band director, and this coming from me, a band director.

  2. No, the BoD coup I'm referring to happened in 2001, after Madison finished 11th. I think Mr. Howard was actually brought back for a short time before the board was voted out, a new board voted in, and Mr. Stewart reinstated for the 2002 season. After 2002, Mr. Stewart stepped down from his role and Sal Salas was hired.

I THINK that's the timeline I remember...I might have to dig on RAMD (higher power forbid!) to be sure.

Oh, and I'm referring to everybody as "Mr." since I can't seem to remember some first names and I want to be respectful. :D

To be entirely truthful, this actually happened after the 2000 season. We had a meeting in early October of 2000 and ousted the then board.

  3. Competitve placement isn't relevant to ones enjoyment of the show, is it?

We further so much of the "Top 12 or bust" attitude nowadays. DCI is as guilty as anyone, but they have to promote who draws the band kids overall.

...heck, the 13-23 kids didn't even get a CD, and get left out in the cold on a lot of the the coverage.

14th place isn't the end of the world for any corps.

If I'm entertained, I don't care if the Scouts come in 60th place. :)

    AMEN!

  4. ...and took 14th! Yeah baby, that was nice!

Hmmmm, well, yes they did in 2002, but we had more freedays in 1997 and 1998 and we placed 5th and 6th. I think your comment is way off-base. If anything put them in 14th it was the colorguard.

Nice failed attempt at facts though.

Oh, and in 1995, they the same deal.

Oh, and in 1988, they also had the same deal.

But yes, freedays are the ruin of a corps, even though, shhhh! Don't tell, corps have even won championships by giving their members time off! but that's our little secret.

  5. Let me get this. You have a beef over "rumors"??? Hmmmmmm....... Doesn't that strike you as unfair? To both the BOD and yourself?

I agree that this business belongs inhouse.

Unfair, more like misinformed, ignorant, and close-minded.

Sorry, I'm a ######## that marched too long ago to understand this politically correct world. Oh those 1990's why have you forsaken me.

  6. if you think about it though... doesnt the BOD set the corps budget? that technically does affect what is going on on the field...

Every organization is run different, it's not fair to make assumptions of what one BoD does as a responsibility over another.

ALso, would people be blasting the Madison BoD had they not let Sal go, or would we simply be whining and b*tching about the show and how much we didn't like it.

I love that organization, and the BoD, and I think it's unfair that some of us think we know what is good for a group simply because we are still on a high horse from that one year we marched 3rd soprano for corps B, or whatever our experiences are.

  7. The Troopers situation was nothing like the current situation with CR. The Troopers admins were knowingly breaking the law. They were warned and chose not to comply. The situation with Capital is that there are several members who don't feel like they were treated fairly. Apples to Oranges.

Well..you have a point there, but I think the Capital Regiment leadership knowingly dropped the ball on members this summer. I'm sorry, but like #### am I going to believe that these problems simply came up during the course of the season. If a director/administrator has a problem mid-season, as Cap Reg clearly did this summer, it was DEFINATELY known before the summer. Unless of course there was no budget made before the season, or if there were just countless amounts of extra bills that had to be paid over teh summer, such as TONS of breaking vehicles, or equipment.

It may be as you put it "apples and oranges" but it is also breaking the law in my book, maybe we can look under "child endangerment" thats what I would put serving f**king cake as a dinner.

  8. I think DCI should not allow them to tour next summer under their current umbrella. If they are going to push a group like the Troopers out and make them get their "act together" then this same process should be used with Capital Regiment.

I also think that these wonderful members should go out and seek a new corps that will treat them well both on and off the field. I understand loyalty, but what happened to this corps makes me sick.

  9. Shows are lame now...I mean, going to them, not what people are doing. There are not those moments that cause an "eruption" anymore. I often feel as though I am at the symphony when I watch some corps. It's polite applause and thats about it.

I remember in 1999 when we were coming on the field in our company front on finals night we actually stepped off wrong becasue we couldn't hear the command of the drum major. Now it was our faults, but f**k it, i'd rather us miss a step off because the crowd is freaking than have the audience just give us a "respectable response."

I wish the crowds were more like they are at major sporting events where the crowd is actually rowdy and almost at a point of utter chaos.

  10. Excuse me - the books at Madison ARE in order! Funny, I always thought the Board of Directors were supposed to raise capital also - not just the ExDir!!!! Hhmmmmm :sshh:

There was a time when this actually happened, we will call that time the 70's, 80's, and 90's, and we will remember them with much pride, as they were a time when money was there, and certain organizations were talked about with much reverence. Sadly, those days are no longer as shiny as they once were, hopefully this "new direction" will help to allow times like this again.

  11. I do not think that hiring people from other corps necessarily means that they are going to have new and fresh ideas. I think it is simply a question of the person working to become a better teacher/musician that will help with new and fresh ideas. I believe it comes down to personal and professional growth rather than coming from a different group.

  12. I do not understand how people call switching to Bb horns, amping most groups, larger corps, more props, singing, narration, drum speak as innovative.

About the only things that are innovative anymore are fancy drill moves that pail in comparison to what was written by Zingali and Brubaker anyways.

All of the above mentioned areas have been running wild in BOA and WGI for years.

True that drums corps often do these things at much higher levels than BOA, and many things stronger than WGI, although James Logan did do the Yowza show much better, but these things are NOT innovative.

They are new ideas to the activity, but that does not make them innovative. Maybe they are borrowed, but not innovative.

And this talk of evolution, drum corps has evolved in years, its simply brought over ideas from other activities. That is not evolution, that is borrowing.

Evolution was adding a grounded pit instead a marching pit, or adding numbers of valves because so that a horn could play in more keys. Making Bb ok simply meant intonation factors MIGHT be easier to deal with.

Anyways, flame away, I am off my soap box now.

    Have a great day!
