  1. Learned this trick from a friend and then did a little bit of reading on it myself.

Applying witch hazel in liquid form to a fresh hit will help constrict the blood vessels which will slow down the internal bleeding which causes the discolouration.

I was kind of skeptical at first until I tried it this weekend. I took a really good blow to my wrist and it immediately started to swell and change colour. On my next water break I applied the witch hazel stuff and now around 36 hours later it is already disappearing. It also helped my foot which had been taking a beating all day from some ground work we were cleaning.

I applied it not only on that water break, but again later that afternoon because I was still using that arm a lot which could cause it to still bleed some more. Everyone should have some of this stuff in their caboodle. You can get it at most natural health stores. Mine has alcohol in it but a couple of the sites I looked at recommended getting one without (makes sense if it's an open wound - that would hurt).

Keep in mind that you will still be swollen and sore though - the stuff's great but it's no miracle worker :withstupid:

    Edit:

The part I forgot to mention is that my bruises usually take a week before they even start to disappear.

  2. Cathy, we can always use experienced tour personnel during our summer tours.:rock:

Drop me a line and we can talk about it. Maybe you and Jim can come with us !!!!:lol::laughing:

You should come on tour with us this year!!! Mom will be along for some of it too

...and I still haven't gotten Kiler's sabre over to Danny's yet lol. She'll get it back...I promise lol.

  3. ~*Dutch Boy*~

    Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

    2007 DIII Bronze Medalists

We have grown a bit in the last couple camps but are still looking to fill some brass and front ensemble positions.

Drums and guard are filling up, so we would like to have a full hornline and pit to balance things out.

Don't think you live too far - we have members from Michigan, Ohio, Japan, Germany and of course our home area of Ontario.

With members all over, carpooling can make travel much more affordable to be able to attend camps.

For those south of the border, we are much closer than you may think

If you look us up on a map, we are only about 65 miles sw of Toronto.

Check us out online at www.dutchboydrumcorps.com

Please feel free to contact us for more information at dutchboydrumcorps@rogers.com.

We would love to answer any questions you may have regarding membership

As for hats, it is something that we are currently looking into. If you are interested in purchasing a hat, please send us an e-mail or pm. The more people we know about, the easier things are to figure out with the guy doing the embroidering

One last note, we are still accepting pit and horn members for the 2008 season (housing is available for out of town members)

...as well as donations  (towards those horrible fuel costs that seem to keep rising )

  5. There are so many colour and style options for dance shoes now that there is no reason for students to be outside barefoot. Should they step on a piece of glass, a nail or a used needle cause some druggies decided to get high on your field the night before, it just wouldn't be good. Why take the chance.

We have a "something on your feet at all times" policy where I am because the last thing anyone wants is for a student to be out of commision while their foot heals over something that easily could have been prevented. It would just be a waste of time for everyone else that is still out there rehearsing because then you would have to re-clean everything you just did to catch the injured member back up. Just my two cents :)

  6. For winterguard a few years back, we half filled the clear poles with blue coloured water. It weights it weird but it created a neat effect because depending on what the work was, the pole would be clear and times and blue at others. The poles we were using weren't the greatest quality though and every once in a while when someoen would drop, you would hear that painful sound of it smashing and coloured water just splashing everywhere lol.

  7. They placed in the 1st with an 86.850 on day one of the Bakersfield regional. Following them were Memphis with an 86.475 and Dutch with an 82.825. I didn't get to see them perform, but they obviously have their act together to top everyone :) It's unfortunate that they are in international class and won't be able to compete for the div III title.

    *edit: added scores*

  8. From an instructor's point of view, I like the challenge. I really feel I can make a difference and "TEACH." At higher levels I feel I am just facilitating knowledge and ability that is already there. Tweak this and tweak that is not as satisfying as developing the total package and seeing the realization from students as to just how far they have gone.

Very well put! I don't think I could have said it better myself :)

I also feel that there is more of a close family feeling in the smaller corps that just becomes so strong when the members realize what they have accomplished together as a team.

    (PS I miss you Bill!)

  9. First of all, the most important benefit of allowing woodwinds is to expand the activity to more people. Drum corps requires a huge commitment as it is, but learning a new instrument is something that shuts out more kids. To become a brass player in a Division I corps, it takes a year of learning the instrument, plus another year of either a DCA or Div II group. Not that there’s anything bad about doing this, but not many are willing to put in two years of learning a new instrument, dishing out money for lessons, not to mention the money and experience they may lose when they decide to devote every summer until they’re 22 for just that one shot at a Div I.

For me, I’m a woodwind who wants to switch over for brass. I’m 19, so there isn’t much time left. There also isn’t much to find in the northeast. The only Div I corps I can attempt is The Cadets (since the Boston Crusaders are really a Florida corps). For an experienced brass player, the Cadets can be difficult to make, but I need to spend extra time, money, and energy to learn the instrument so I can just have that attempt for one summer. I’m sure most kids aren’t willing to go through that (heck, I don’t even know if I’m up to it yet).

Actually, MANY kids do exactly that because they are willing to do what it takes to reach their dreams.

    Jetman

What a great post. It was well thought out and you presented your case in a way that others on this site can learn from.

    Although, I must respectfully disagree.

For one, yes, I am a "Drum Corps Purist". There have been a lot of things that I lived to see change in this activity. Some diminished my experience (amped vocals) some increased my experience (B flat bugles, pits, to some extent, dance).

Try to think of it like this; I decided a long time ago that I wanted to play trumpet through grade school and high school. I was committed to develop my "talent"; I was good at it and loved it. But, deep down I REALLY wanted to play guitar for a rock band. (They got the chicks!) Because I committed to the trumpet it opened the doors to many wonderful things including marching drum corps and meeting my wife. The rock bands I wanted to play in didn't want trumpets/brass. I felt left out and hurt (I was very young) but I got over it once I realized that by adding brass to a rock band it would totally change the dynamics and sound of the band. This is the same with woodwinds and drum corps. Like I had to deal with my "choice" to play trumpet instead of guitar, you have to deal with your choice to play a woodwind instead of a brass instrument.

Lastly, the lines between BOA and drum corps are already thin. This is one last thing that keeps us what we are and what they are. I disagree with your comment that the two will still be separate if woodwinds are allowed. The addition of woodwinds will turn drum corps into non-school affiliated musical organizations that will eventually compete against marching bands. Then, eventually DCI and BOA will merge. Once this happens, it will be the death of something that I have loved for over 30 years.

p.s. Oh, that rock band I wanted to join. It was a little neiborhood band from Chicago called Styx. You might of heard of them. If you are too young to know them download a song or two or ask your parents about them. After you hear one or two of thier songs, imagine them with a brass section. I am sure you'll agree, it would sound much different. Styx wouldn't be Styx and they may not have been one of the most popular bands of the 70's and 80's.

    AMEN!!!

Another idea along those lines would be like an NHL player telling FIFA they have to change their rules so that he can use his hockey stick because he doesn't feel like putting in the effort to learn how to use his feet just so that he can be part of the world cup. Immagine how well that would go over with the soccer community... <**>

If you want it you have to work for it!

You don't get it toph. He wants it. He wants it all. He wants it all right now. He doesn't want to adapt to it, he wants it to adapt to him. He will be mad if it doesn't. Guess what, that's the american way...the attitude of being given everything without having to do anything. He wants a world champion to change its instrumentation so he can march at that level.

To the original poster, there are drum corps that will take you THIS SUMMER. Look at the list at take your pick. I spent three years in a "little" unkown corps and had a great time. I also marched D1 and had a great time. I'm sorry that you waited until you were 19 but you can't just demand any activity to change to suit you.

You're 19 and a woodwind player that wants to march drum corps.

What's with people today, you would rather change the entire activity to suit you than go thru the effort to adapt to the activity?

    Good grief!

If you really want to march drum corps, learn a bugle and do it!! I would say thousands of woodwind players have done that very thing over the last 20, 30, 40 years. Such disrespect to them to demand that drum corps change.

And what about all the woodwinds players in drumlines and color guards!! And as DM's!! Such disrespect to those talented folks and their love of corps.

Last thing that solidifies this whole topic.... Picture this: clarinets to the box!! Or better yet, bass guitar amp pusher to the box!! Ugggh!!

I am a woodwind player that wanted to join corps. So I joined the guard. The following year I moved over to brass and that is where I finished out the majority of my years. I was honoured when I was given the duty of DM for my age-out year. It's all about ADAPTING. If you want it bad enough, you will work your butt off and make it happen. When I was still working on playing horn better, I asked my old high school teacher if I could come in during her grade 10 classes and play along with the trumpets so that I could get the extra practice each day. A lot of people out there are willing to help you if you take the time to ask and commit yourself to it.

The Drum Corps division, and the "really long hot dog break" division......

    Haha yes!!! Jim you rock!

Finally I would like to say that I am not trying to attack anyone personally. I am just saying that A LOT of very dedicated members over the decades have helped keep Drum Corps the way it is. To make such a massive change like adding WW would just kill the heritage of Corps. The line in the sand keeps fading with each change. We need to put our foot down and keep what is left. I'm sorry if band people don't agree with me. But if you were to march a summer with a corps and experience the music and the activity like current members have, you would understand my frustration. And to think, this is only a perspective from the last decade. I can only immagine how long since members feel about the idea.

  10. I've found that the duffle bags on wheels work really well because when you need to squeeze it into the last spot in the bay you can, and you don't have to carry it around (not counting when there are stairs involved lol). As for shampoo and other messy items, pack them into a hard tupperware container in the centre of your bag. That way if your bag takes a hit from something, the clothing around it absorb the hit and if something leaks just for the sake of being annoying, it is all sealed inside of the container which is easy enough to rinse out in the shower. This is how I packed my stuff when I would travel back and forth to camps by bus knowing that I was going to be sitting on my bag while I waited for my bus at the terminal.

  11. Housing together happens A LOT in DIV II/III. In 2005, we housed with a corps at pretty much every show. for the first few, we were with three corps. we didn't ever share support staff though.

I remember that. It was great to tour with all of my friends from the other corps even if I wasn't marching with them B) It was just too bad that we didn't combine to make one large caravan cause as they say, two heads are better than one (especially with awkward directions lol)

  12. I've found the easiest way to do the sleeves on plain flags is to leave 10 inches of material on the side where the sleeve is going to be (attached to the main silk).

fold the 10" flap over in half (so that it is 5" of doubled material) and then hem the top and bottom of the flag (including the sleeve). this is also the time to sew on tabs if you prefer to use them. you would place them in the center of the 5".

once the top and bottom of the flag are hemmed and sewn, fold the 5" flap over again in half so that you now have a 2 1/2" piece that is 4 layers thick.

now sew down the inside edge of the sleeve from top to bottom sewing all 4 layers together (the inside being the side of the sleeve that meets the main part of the flag).

make sure that you sew this part very strong and that there are at least two lines of stiches. try not to get any farther than 3/4 of an inch from the edge of the sleeve, or your sleeve may end up a little tight.

oh and everyone is right about the flag being half the height of the pole, however you might want to knock off an inch to compensate for the knob so that your flag doesn't go past the center of the pole once taped.

I hope this helps :) if you want more detailed info pm me

  13. The press release mentioned them cancelling the 2 early season exhibitions...but does that include the Kitchener, ON show on July 14th? Being one of the corps scheduled to perform (and getting excited about going to Canada for the first time), I just checked DCI.org's Calendar and the show isn't listed anymore...?

Was it run by Kiwanis or someone else (Dutch Boy?) and was it cancelled?

It was confirmed by an e-mail from a member of the DCI team that the Kitchener July 14th show has been cancelled. That goes the same for the Ft. Lauderdale show (not sure of the date) that was also being hosted by them. We got that e-mail before KK's announcement came out.

  14. I disagree with this too. Quiet focus time and a power nap and really rejuvenate you for a show.

It just depends on each person. It's usually the younger members that are bad for not really waking up after a pre-show nap. By younger I'm referring to the 10-14 age gap. Those are the ones I always have the most problems trying to wake up.

I disagree. Get off your butt and throw your crap away yourself. (Maybe I'm just bitter from sitting in the front of the bus)

That's why on our bus we have a garbage at both ends of the bus B) (and the game is ALWAYS on)

Hardly. Why wake up everyone in front of you just because you have a little trash? Or while they're trying to get ready for a show?

I hope people wouldn't be eating on the bus while everyone is getting ready for a show with all of the nice clean uniforms out in the open <**>

We are going to the Hornell show for the first time this summer, thanks for the heads up! Cheap = good. b**bs

This year they are going to wonder what hit them cause the line up is going to be so much worse now that it's been advertised here lol

Here's one for you, leave leaky water jugs/coolers empty and under the bus. Nothing upsets me more on tour than waking up to find the bottom of my blanket and pack sack soaked (along with my spare clothing, the tour travel log for the corps and my personal reading material) <**> <**>

  15. I love the fact that my sister and I are in the same corps. It's more fun at family gatherings when we tell a funny story from the summer cause then between the two of us we get more of the details right :P Plus, when your airmattress grows a hole, you have a guarenteed temp replacement (even if you have to share). If you have a couple things more than your bag can hold, you can throw it into your siblings bag if they have the room and then you know your stuff is going to make it back home :) Plus, we can spin together at home. It makes me look a little less crazy when both of us are out at 3am spinning on the front lawn lol.

  16. It is blue devils because I have a pic of the same day, just a different angle that I got off a DCI news post.

    *edit*-> it is from 2001.

This is the pic that I have. You can tell its the same day because of the guy in the white shirt sitting in a chair on deck.

    BlueDevilsWarmUp2001.jpg

  17. Yeah here I am making my family wait before presents that we have to watch DCI Honor Corps on TV, and they were on there for 5 seconds. My dad's comment *Wow, they were really rocking...is that all they're gonna show?*

My mom was mad it wasn't live after I told her how the color guard had to do over 1000 drop spins while Regis and Kelly did their thing.

    I was disappointed. ####.

I beleive it came out to something around 1536 drop spins. One of the girls counted the whole time...and did anyone mention that it was with completely unweighted poles?

I didn't get to see it. I assume there were marching bands in the parade.

Did they get more air time? If so, I have to wonder....why?

This college band that was on after us was on for about 20-30 seconds at least. I think the only reason why they got 3 times as much tv time as us is because they were over 3 times as large as us numbers wise.

Dan Acheson told the members that a total of 250 invites were sent out, and about 115 people showed up.

Yeah yeah, great memories/bonding....it happened, and its the salvation of the weekend for the members, seeing as how the coverage on ABC was a joke. But for what it cost me, I could nearly do a complete tour w/ most div 2/3 corps, instead of 3 nights in an overpriced theme park.

Don't get me wrong, I had a great time meeting people and hanging w/ my corps buds....also got to put on the super suit one last time, however the effort that was put into the show design by the staff, the hassle that the ABC/Disney gave the corps staff over the repertoire and the effort put out by the staff and members for the performance was incredible overkill for 6 seconds of TV time.

If we weren't going to be on TV, the ABC/Disney people shouldn't have wasted 30 minutes with us at the parade starting line getting the block set at just the right point so the whole routine could fit within the cameras range.

They also shouldn't have had us do 2 takes.

They also shouldn't have spent time and money doing TV promos about the corps (other than to appease DCI, I imagine) for 6 seconds.

They also shouldn't have been so indecisive about the show repertoire by changing the performance song 3 times, giving the music arrangers and guard choreographers a huge stress induced headache caused by having to meet unfair deadlines. (This also hurt the performance as it greatly delayed the music/guard work being released to the members)

You can say all you want about how it should be about the fun time the members got to have, and I'll never disagree that thats not important. But thats only half the reason for even being there in my opinion.

I give nothing but praise to the DCI staff for being far more on the ball with this project than ABC or Disney could have dreamed to be. It really shows me just how much better corps people are at sticking to their word, accomplishing the task no matter what, and being professionals no matter the circumstance.

I wish people outside of the drumcorps world could be such.

    ZSD,

A PO'd honor corps member and son of a PO'd parent.

Well, although I can't say I'm as upset as you are, you do provide some very good statements that I can relate to.

My suggestion: Fix a camera on one spot in these parades and get rid of the announcers. Let the camera pick up the parade as if it were a fan watching from the side. (Or a bird's eye view in this case) That way you get to watch just the parade. As far as commercials go, I haven't thought about how to deal with them yet :P

It seemed like there were at least 6-8 cameras filming just us for both runs. 4 of them were on either side of the street (2 each) and then there was the boom and one directly in front of us that I know of forsure. I think that's why I'm so dissapointed with the coverage. It's not even about the fact that you don't really get to see anyone up close. I would have been happy with any shots, as long as it showed the majority of the routine.

Your remarks are demonstrative of my point. Your first sentence is followed immediately by the contradictory second. Obviously you got something out of the opportunity or you would regret the money that you spent. Did you also dislike spending a Drum Corp weekend with talented members from other Corps, in Sunny Florida or here' the kicker- in a hotel room verses a gym floor? Yes those activities were/are a whole lot cheaper in your Corp. How about the parade (how much drill does your Corp perform for parades?). Here's another question - when was the last time you did all of that with the expectation of being filmed immediately after two days of rehearsal- after having music for what- a week and drill for 24 hours?

Yeah it was 'Sunny Florida' however just because it was sunny doesn't mean that it was hot. Also, I would have given up my hotel room for a gym floor in an instant! Being seperated into our hotel rooms just took away from the sense of family that everyone living in one large space brings. Some of my best corps memories are in the gym at lights out.

All I can say is Thank You to DCI for setting up this opportunity for us even if it didn't go as well as everyone thought it would. I still had a great time and provided it wouldn't cost nearly as much if at all in the future, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
