  1. Hi Everyone,

I'm very new to Drum Corps. For the past few years I have attended a few shows. This was my very first time attending a DCA Championship. I'm a very big Hurcs fan. I am also fair to the other corps as well. We all know the hard work and dedication that goes along with marching in a drum corps. I watched the Hurcs win show after show only losing to the Bucs. The Bucs are very good and march a very clean show. I guess that is what all corps strive for. I was ready to watch the Buccs, so I could watch a top notch performance.I do understand forms and the difficulty of marching with a horn. I thought the Bucs had great horns and drums, BUT...... Their color guard did not intertwine with brass and drums. Same for MB..... You could see how rarely the horns and drums intertwined with the guard . The Hurcs, marched, played and intertwined with the guard time and time again. I was, impressed. I was impressed with the music of the Bucs and the MB. BUT the whole program for the Hurcs, was clearly far more difficult then any other corps. Empire didn't move as much. They hired some dancer to dance around the field. I felt, the Hurcs took risk. I know the Hurcs are a very good drum corp. I congratulate the top 3 and other corps in the finals. and I'm sorry the men in blue didn't see the risk and pasion the Hurcs took with them onto the field. Now I say, the fire is in their eyes and the sky is the limit. The THUNDER IS HERE for 2010.

i'm just going on the "intertwined" comment.... hurcs show was a a guard show w/ a horns and drums.... bucs was a drum corps show highlighting all sections of the corps.

  2. It was a great show all around. It was my wife's 1st DCA show (but she's very familiar with DCI). She called some placements better than I  Even though she's a guard person, she said she really liked Hurcs Drumline...and she really enjoyed Alliance and Brigs shows...

I do have a question...although I'm a Buccaneer alum (and vey proud they won again)...and for the last few years I've always thought MBI was underscored..so it's nice seeing them up there again...but my real question...and I've thought this for the past few years. Nothing against any other guard, because there were some great guards out there, but why doesn't Bush win guard. I thought they were amazing..did the judges really see them that much lower then the other guards...or is it that a 9th place corps can't win guard. I've just never understood why they don't place higher. What am I missing?

Point of history...if I recall correctly...when I marched Bucs, the Matadors were cleaning up in guard all season. They did not make finals as a full corps, but DCA let them compete so that their guard could compete...

the corps placement doesn't really have anything to do with the guard placement. i remember back in the late 90's sunrisers had the best color guard around, but as i recall the corps didn't place in the top of the class. it's all about how effective the judge sees the book to be and how well it's handled and performed by the members of the guard. this year was pretty close... bucs had a 19.8 in guard, hurcs had a 19.9.....

  3. we do use markers across the front of the floor, but it also is how the floor is folded. i believe it comes out to a large 4 step interval between our markers. for front to back we use seems. but like most said, a lot of forms come from spacial awareness.

  4. everything u have stated could be the cause of it.. i always tell my kids to pull their shoulder blades together when they toss.. it opens up their chest and makes them pull the arm back... u can also have them think about dropping a ball behind their should when they release.. someone had mentioned that in a previous post and i told some kids and it worked.

as for the catches.. they need to be slamming their hands into it, but also pull the hands apart on the catch. the side to side helps with the wobbly catches. plus.. if they are not throwing high enough to get the rotations all the way around, they would be scooping the toss in and catching with the hands at 2 different times rather than a solid catch with both hands at the same time...

just some pointers.... but it seems like ur eye is working.....

  5. Bucs: They are what is advertized. Strong horn line one of the best DCA sounds ever. Percussion feature really rocked the crowd. The show design is really a good one, the first 3/4 of their show really flowed. Now if I may say so the last 1/4 of the show had me feeling like I had seen it all before, a bit repetitious. Guard has improved from last year and have some strong features, they can improve once they have their timing better together. Everone is going to have to step up their game to catch the Bucs once again.

i didn't have the best seats for the show, but imho bucs guard was the cleanest and most effective color guard out there... only one major issue was at the end of the ballade.....the other guards have talent, but are far more dirtier and not near as musical......

  6. I thought TIA was $75? They also have the largest number of groups in any circuit around the country, so they can better split the costs, I guess.

all i know is that indoor is $25.00 if your band doesn't not compete in TOB. so, maybe marching band is $75.00

we've never really had an issue in TIA. it's the closest circuit and keeps our kids costs down which is good for an independent guard. We just tried a MAIN show this year, and will probably return next year.

  7. Bucs Guard

    2005 1st 19.9 (out of 20 total)

    2006 2nd 19.2 (0.2 out of 1st)

    2007 3rd 19.2 (0.2 out of 1st)

    2008 3rd 19.1 (0.6 out of 1st)

19.1 to 19.9 over the past 4 years hardly seems substandard. Are there other great guard programs in DCA right now? Absolutely. And the circuit looks better because of it.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! someone got to it before i did.. plus.. be on the look out.. i think they will be better this year than last...
