  1. Just some thoughts folks...

A long time ago, when I was in junior corps, I had a corps director challenge some members with the saying: "If you don't like the way things are run around here, go start your own corps!"

Well, It seems some people, with like-minded others have done just that. I seriously doubt people were "stolen" from Sky, rather they made the decision to leave the corps, and I'm sure they felt they had a good reason to leave....unless of course someone wants to asset that free will has been suspended in the NYC area.

Is it sad that Sky is not marching a field show? Certainly. But is it right to blame people who DID NOT want to march with SKY anymore for this? Truthfully, I don't give a rat's butt for this other corps, but I will defend their right to exist.

Before condemning this other corps, perhaps the reasons these people left Sky should be examined, but of course we will never see or hear of this dirty laundry on this forum, will we? <_<

Folks, we need to let this go, as nothing we do on this forum is going to make Sky come back, rather, all we can do is hurt. I hope the Skyliners do well at minicorps and return next year, stronger than ever.

  2. Oh, really?

    Sam's Logic:

Heat Wave can't get 35 members. (major premise)

Heat Wave goes inactive. (minor premise)

Not getting 35 members causes inactive status. (conclusion)

Question: In what sense has Sam's logic been proven correct?

Answer: There's no way in Hades that Heat Wave's folding has proven anything of the sort.

This is an example of the post hoc, ergo propter hoc logical fallacy (The sun rises. The rooster crows when the sun rises. The rooster's crowing causes the sun to rise.)

    Let's look at some evidence:

2006 - no 35-member rule, Heat Wave inactive.

    2007 - 35-member rule, Heat Wave inactive.

The conditions changed from one year to the next, yet the result is the same.

There's no way to exclude ALL OTHER reasons for Heat Wave folding, besides lacking their 35th member. In fact, there's ample evidence to claim that lacking the 35th member (e.g. being delegitimized by rule) had nothing at all to do with HW packing it in: nothing was wrong with Heat Wave that having the 35th member would fix, because they also lacked the 34th member, and the 33rd member, etc.

Looking at it another way: Yes, having a 35th member could be a necessary condition for getting out and competing, but it is not a sufficient condition in this case.

Im with Dale on this one; look, I went to a Heatwave rehearsal last November to check out the corps. At that time they had around 30 horns, a dozen or so drums, and who knows how many guard..something obviously happened over the winter. To blame DCA for Heatwave folding is ridiculous....no matter how you want to slice, dice, and make julian fries, Heatwave's demise is of their volition...lets stop the finger pointing and play nice.

  3. I totally agree with you . At least in Scranton I felt safe at the hotels and the parking lots. I personally will not be attending the finals again at least for a couple of years. For some of us this was the worst place yet. Bad seating, no food, no PARKING, and along way to travel to have a bad time. I know you folks in NY state think is great that it is in your back yard more power to you. <_< <_< <_< AND I DO NOT WANT TO SIGN ANOTHER WAIVER FOR A HOTEL STATING THAT WE WILL NOT DRINK AND PARTY IN THERE. Come on is that not what we travel for to have fun and see everyone. IMO. And I do love New York I grew up in NJ. But this part of the state is not nice. Again IMO.

This is fine with me, as there is nothing more irritating than a drunken old man babbling about drum corps. Come on, this is what gave "Senior Corps", now all age corps its bad name that we are trying to overcome... As for your seat(s), I will be glad to take them. Kudos to Allen Buell and all those who have set up this show up. As for Championships, me and my wife expect to have a marvelous time in Roch-cha-cha!

  4. To get on ESPN is "simple." If DCA is really marketable to a mass audience, all we need is $35,000-$50,000 worth of corporate sponsorship to cover advertising and cost of producing and airing the show.

All corporate sponsors, please take one large step forward...

Well put Brent, and pardon me if I have to step out of the way of the stampede of corporate sponsors.....not.

Therin is the question...IS DCA marketable to a mass audience? The fact that DCI over the last 30 or so years on TV has failed to do so tells me its not. If drumcorps of any kind were truly " the music of the masses" sponsors would be paying US to appear on TV. Corporate sponsors only put out money for shows they think lots of people will watch, as they wish to sell goods, period.

  5. Actually Lee,

I believe a great deal of what you say, but lets face it, like most of life, drum corps is a political thing. Nothing is going to happen in this circuit for the better, quickly. It all takes time and changes in perception (on part of certain members of certain corps). As for drum corps becoming a really big thing in the general public's eye....thats unrealistic. The general public by and large does not respect the efforts of "non pop" musicians, and relegates us to the same drawer as so-called "nerds". Even in its greatest heyday, drum corps has been a niche activity, and always will be.

The Juniors have been on TV since 1975, I think, and while I think its cool to see, let us remember DCI had to pay ESPN to broadcast their championships. We all know thats not the way TV or any other part of the entertainment industry works. Large-scale sponsorship (if possible)may well be something this activity should not have. The money involved could put DCA, the corps, and even performers under pressures not even imagined yet--which could in itself destroy the activity. So while making the activity bigger seems like a great idea, are we really prepared to do this?

  6. Kamarag- The United States Flag Code, established by Congress, is a list of rules and recomendations regarding the etiquette and protocol for our National Colors. Although I no longer posses a copy, I used to get copies at the American Legion or VFW. They should be able to hook you up. Also, try your Congressman or U.S. Senator. B)

Question- Is it ever appropriate to fly the American flag upside-down?

Answer- Yes, as a signal for distress or surrender. It then, is technically not considered the United States flag.

Id like to add that this regulation involving what is also known as the "church pennant" is also found in Army Field Manual 22-5, and virtually evey American Boy Scout manual printed in the last 50 or so odd years...Drive on marine, Semper Fi!

  7. On this discussion of corp's scores in differant shows being irrelevant, last year at this time I pointed out (incorrectly)that Bush's score could have not possibly gotten as high as it did, and attributed it to the fact that they were at a different show than we (Brigs at the time). Well, if you folks look at the scores in august of last year, one sees a real tight consistancy in the scores, regardless of who was in what show at the time, especially when compared to the results at finals. In this case, Bush had gotten very good, very fast, and passed my corps. Irrelevant, I dont think so. While there is still time for a few surprises, I believe this ranking system is as good as it gets, barring some sort of rocket science technology.

  8. After aging out in 1981, I attended DCI shows whenever possible, mainly in California, where I was stationed twice during my military career. During this time I saw the passion evaporate from junior corps shows. This trend continued until 1997, when I went to a show in Fort Wayne Indiana, and fell asleep during a Phantom Regiment performance. I decided at that point to stop going to DCI shows.

In 1998, I moved to NY to be part of the 10th Mountain division, whereupon my wife "discovered" senior corps on the internet, and convinced me to go to a show. I was so blown away, I knew I had to be a part of it. My first year with Brigs was '99, though I had to quit due to a deployment to Bosnia. After that incident I knew that I had to be free of military commitments in order to march, so I did not rejoin the corps until 2003 (when I retired from the army), and stayed until last year....its been a wild ride, one that I'll never forget.

  9. To me, an Alumni Corps is a TRIBUTE to the Corps itself, and to ALL the members who ever marched in that corps.

It's also a way of showing the fans - "this is how we were, and we're back to "give back" to the activity and to our honored Drum Corps.

In short, it's a good way for the participants to say to everyone -

    WE MATTERED!

And we want to HONOR OUR CORPS AND THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US, THOSE WHO PARTIPATE IN OUR CORPS TODAY, AND GIVE TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO FOLLOW.

And that's so very true! At least it is for me!

Hmmm..I disagree...I think you still matter.. for what you've done and what you still do for the activity^OO^
