  1. Music City Legend Drum and Bugle Corps, Tennessee's first and largest "all-age" drum

and bugle corps, is pleased to announce its 2008 repertoire. The Nashville-based corps completed

its most successful season ever in 2007 with an 11th place performance in Open Class at the DCA

World Championship, held in Rochester, New York, this past Labor Day weekend, achieving its

highest score and placement at that event since advancing to field competition in 2005.

Returning to the corps as Program Director for 2008, Joe Murphy and the corps' new

Visual Designer Ken Calhoun have finalized plans for this year's program, entitled They're

Playing Our Song. The storyboard features a "characterized" program presenting the life of a

couple who meet in college and grow old together, opening with the vocal standard Moon River

and They're Playing Our Song, Assassin's Tango (from the 2005 movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and

Arturo Sandoval's A Mis Abuelos as the production feature, Lee Ann Womack's hit title track

ballad I Hope you Dance, and the closer, the Stray Cat's classic Rock This Town.

    [Excerpt from press release]

If you liked last year's show, you'll dig this one too. The Screaming Contra returns and we'll throw in a few more twists along the way. Entertainment is the name of the game for Legend 2008.

Finally!! I didn't think I could hold my breath any longer!

This is going to be such a cool show!

  2. I hope that the powers that be of DCP do not find this offending, it is just the truth. Actually, nothing would probably happen if you shoot a video, just don't sell it. If you sell it for profit, then it opens an entirely different can of beans. Just ask DCI, they went through this a few years ago with the DVD's they sell. Folks, it comes down to the "Napster" thing. Song Writers/Publishers are going to get their cut if a song that they did gets arranged. This can apply to Drum Corps, University Bands, High School Bands, Show Bands, WGI, and the list goes on. They are getting tough on this. Trust me, I talked with Dennis Eveland about doing some brass scores for us this year, and he would not do the first thing until we had permission from said "companies" about said "songs", to do so. But if you do it, don't sell it unless you have permission to do so. Now, on a different note, if arrangers have their own scores that they want to sell you, there is nothing wrong with that.

Just a friendly reminder. Just trying to keep anyone from harm.

I believe (and I could be going off of old info) that if you change a note (or something significant) every eight measures then you can legally call it YOUR OWN arrangement no matter who originally did it. That's how it used to be anyway.

  3. Three of us in the Cabs Alumni Corps play 4-Valve "G" Dynasty contras & we love 'em!!! And no cutting any tubing to get them pitched correctly, either!!! ^OO^ ^OO^ ^OO^

    AMEN BROTHER!!!!

  4. just who is doing that Scott? who really is doing that?

is it on your tapes? your sheets? is your staff telling you that?

are the other corps doing that?

are the fans giving you that type of reaction?

just who is constantly discounting you????

Perhaps it's because of what I read on here, Liz, that I feel that way. If Cabs show or Empires show or Bucs show gets mentioned people on here go on and on for pages about it. But mention an MCL show or a Frontier show or GCS show and you'll hear crickets chirping forever.

i didn't get to see you guys, not because i was discounting your history or lack of it, but because i had rehearsal. i heard you had an excellet show this year and i look forward to seeing it on the dvd's.

Liz, I've never felt like you, personally, have discounted us. We did have an entertaining show this year and (I believe) a legitimate shot at Finals. But the only reason anyone thought our show was entertaining was because they chose to stay and watch it. Not because they thought we might actually be capable of producing anything of quality. I realize that it will take some time before people will see our name on the program and say "I want to see those guys"...and that's fine. But I think that people should take the time and see everyone if they can. Every Corps out there has the potential to surprise and deserves the respect. Their members work and sweat and give up their personal time just as much as any other corps out there.

  5. it's sarcastic responses like the above that, i'm sure, make any north east corps wonder why they even bother at all when it's clear that you all just look down your noses at them.

Liz, I've got nothing against any of the NE Corps (or ANY Corps for that matter) but when you are constantly discounted simply because you are not a NE Corps and don't have the "History" then you begin to wonder who's looking down whos nose at who!!

  6. Performing our show for appreciative fans and letting it all hang out on the field. Also getting to play through our show one last time in front of GCS and vice versa the next day.

Getting to see some of my DCP buddies

Wearing my Hawaiian shirt at Finals in honor of Fran and Barb.

Hangin with my Corps for the last time this season.

  7. You know....my personal opinion about Prelims order of appearance is that scores should be thrown out the window. I think all Corps should be placed according to a blind draw. I've heard the argument that this will make it too difficult to fairly judge the top Corps against each other. I think this argument isn't worth the air it takes to express them. We are all competeing against each other...not just the top Corps againt the top Corps. MCL was competing just as hard against Bucs as they were Kilties or Cru. If a Corps is good enough they will rise to the top no matter when they go on. And the judges should not be conservative with their scores just because a Corps performs early in a show. Judge us on HOW we perform...not on WHEN we perform.

Again... this is just MY opinion and does not reflect the official opinion of my Corps or my Corpsmates.

  8. Music City Legend was the highlight of my day. I'd give the Nashville, TN, unit of 30B/9FP/6PP/9G the awards for most improved open-class unit of 2007 and best soloists (the two sops might have had that effect on me alone, but has anyone ever heard a contrabass wail like that?). So unlike last year's ensemble music quagmire, this year's show was smartly designed, with music and drill working together instead of against each other. Plenty of intricate rhythmic interplay and vast drill spreads proved this corps' ability to play in the big leagues. The hit-man theme was a hit with the audience, and lent itself to several clever musical effects as well as the more evident visual ploys. No one was left standing at show's end - except the audience.

Thank you so much for a great review! We are very happy that the crowd seemed to enjoy our show. It was a blast to perform.

Our Contra soloist is none other than Joe Murphy of LOUD Mouthpieces fame. :worthy::worthy::worthy: And yes he was playing on one of his own pieces. If you have any doubts about the performance of these mouthpieces I would suggest trying one out. They are incredible.

Again we enjoyed doing this show for the fans and hope to be back in the mix in '08. And congrats go out to all the Finalist Corps. Hope you all have a great offseason and we'll see ya next year.

  9. As a charter member of MCL this is the end of my 4th season. We've had an incredible time doing this thing called Drum Corps and I wouldn't trade a day of it for anything else.

    Other Charter members still marching:

Laurie "Bunny" Ford (my beautiful wife)

    Dr. Willard Johnson

    Jim Reed

    Matt Dudeck

    Ed "Camel Lips" Mason

    Dr. Kary Lyon

    Regi Jones

Scott Rhodes is still with the Corps as our Executive Director but is not marching

It's sad to see that we've lost 11 of our original 17 hornline members (one of those just taking this year off) and all but one of our original pecussion and battery. Maybe we can entice a few of them back next year.
