When you talk about an addition that made a huge impact for a corps in just one year I think of Todd Ryan going to the Blue Devils in 94.

Doesn't hurt to have flexible shoes on. I have found that some thick soled shoes hinder toe height.

WOW!!! George Nelson, you got an amazing instructor and great person there.(not to shabby of a bowler either)lol I had the pleasure to both march and teach with him. You guys are in great hands there.
Congrats George!!
You are too kind Mr Steppe. Don't forget, you are responsible for getting me into the activity, although it was probably to drive you to camps! Did you stay awake for one ride home??????
Miss you guys up North; see you some time next summer.
And thanks Ralph for the kind words as well. Best of luck to Fusion Core this season.

I just hate the feeling that drill designer at PR is a position that is becoming like the head coach at Notre Dame or Alabama.
know the feeling, I had 3 different drill designers in the 4 years I marched.

That's hillarious! I actually earn well over a million a year in the film industry. It's definately not about the money.
Well that makes you a bigger tool than I thought after your first reply.

I recall playing that song for Star of Indiana one night,
I believe one was at Beverly MA.
92 was a blast.

Just a thought.... Not sure if this is a reason, but I would think that the reduction of the total numbers of corps performing has something to do with the end of the regional tour. Now you have corps being sent outside of thier own regions to beef up show lineups.
Also the lack of shows in one's region prob didn't help either.

I heard the Star booing as well in 93.

I think that the ESPN broadcast and the movie theatre telecast has made it more important now to make the top 12 than say 10 years ago. Hard to miss out on that exposure.
-
It would have been interesting to see what that show would have been like with a healthy George Zingali.

That was "Begin, Sweet World", I believe by Richard Stoltzman.
If I remember, that started out to be a mellophone solo in the winter camps. Steve Wands was the baritone soloist that ended up playing it. He was also the soloist in the Crossmen 1990 closer "Now or Never", and is the Jersey Surf Brass Caption Head...

You're right Jason. What a brutal start.
I remember getting to late winter camps and I was one of 5 baritones there, think what the f#$# am I doing here!
There was a show somewhere early season and we just finished the ballad and I heard Barry yell "YOU CAN START PLAYING NOW"! That and I remember the staff talking to us about the possibility of not making finals at Preview of Champions. We actually did pretty well if I remember that weekend, and I think that was a turning point for us.
Just something about this corps...
-
You guys did a bit of the driving as well, right Jason?
What was the average age of that hornline, 17 maybe?
Way too many things were going against this corps for it to be such a success at the end of the season.
The vets knew and appreciated what you and the others were doing for the corps.

Shorty was there 92 and 93.
94 had Barry Hudson, Jason Buckingham, Alan Emerson Ray Linkous, Scott Sluter. Don Van Doren came in every once in awhile. Matt Krempasky arranged they show during the winter, left when there was a change in the admin, then Michael Klesch came in and made some changes, including a complete rewrite of the ballad.
-
And we had maybe 46 horns in that line! Tough year with all of the changes, the almost folding, a lot of new staff.
-
It was an Enya tune called Fairytale I believe, although 94 was a long time ago!
The last cord was the darkest, best quality of sound I was a part of the four years I was in that line.

Quite a far cry from Embryville!! (Smoothie-ville)
:)
Or the Dustbowl in 92.. Didn't we make field lines indoors in the dirt on the floor??
-
Scott Slutter - Learned more from him about brass playing in three years than all 8 of school band.

Nice Job Gary.
Could you have imaging marching for the Trojans or the pied pipers?

Keep in mind that the rules/changes that have shaped the activity today were suggested by and voted on by member corps, not DCI.
I still think it's a pretty cool activity.
