  1. The New Jersey Drum Corps Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations for the Class of 2016.

These nominations are open to any and all folks deemed worthy by their fellow corps members.

This is NOT a 'good ol' boys' thing for directors, instructors and judges, but open to ANYONE

you feel was an absolute, positive influence on your corps members and the success of your corps.

This is the person on whom your corps relied, whether as a Quartermaster, a chaperon, or a guy or

gal in the horn line, drum line or color guard who took it upon him or herself to tutor the new kids on

their own time and start to bring the newbie up to the same level as the rest of the section and be a

contributor. Often, this person did this away from from the crowd and on the sly, not wanting any

praise from the rank and file, just wanting to help the new person feel accepted and truly a MEMBER

of the corps. It doesn't matter if the corps was a National contender or a local parade corps; these

folks were absolutely necessary for the corps' success as a mentor to the kids of the community

and to drum corps in general. It could be a parent who wanted to be a part of something for the

town. It could be the person who had two left feet and wound up being the best marching member.

It can be anyone you feel a corps could just not be without.

Every corps in the state has or had at least one person fitting this description and we would like

to hear about them and consider them for induction into the NJDCHoF. Give it some serious

thought and put pen to paper and let us know why you feel this person should be considered for

induction into the Hall of Fame.

We ask that you go to our website at www.njdrumcorps.org, print out and fill out a nomination

    form and mail it to:

New Jersey Drum Corps Hall of Fame

    213 Parkhights Ave

    Dover, NJ 07801

Please get those nominations in to us before July 1. Thank you very much for your interest in the

New Jersey Hall of Fame and paying homage to all those who have made a contribution to our

great activity over these many years.

    Thank you, once again.

And nominations are still open! Have YOU sent in a nomination form yet??

and the list could go on and on

and that's just the ones from up-state! Add the metro area and you're way up there in numbers!!!

  6. >>Also, Andy, didn't Manny Salort march with the K-men for a time?<<

No ... his girlfriend Robin was in the Kingsmen while Manny was with Sky ... he competed in a few I&E's under the Kingsmen but was never on the field with them to my knowledge ...

    :-)

I think Manny marched an exhibition with them in PA. He was with us, got tossed during the afternoon rehearsal and wound up learning and marching Kingsmen's show in exhibition that night at the show. Didn't have black shoes with him, so marched in black socks! That might have been the day that Pepe smacked him.

  7. By this time both the Legionnaires of Oceanside LI, and the Blue Hornets from Lindenhurst, were past their peaks and essentially parade corps. They must have cobbled together some sort of drill just to qualify for the field show and represent their respective posts.

There were notable individuals connected to both. Oceanside produced Sunriser soloists John "Cookie" Kamerdin ("American in Paris") and Ray Fallon ("Sing, Sing, Sing"...etc). Ray, of course, went on to arrange for numerous DCA and DCI groups.

The Blue Hornets were taught by Bill and Lil Lindy, both fine horn players and educators. She was the first female bugler in the history of senior corps when she marched with and taught the Sunrisers in the late '50s.

Smaller corps always seemed to produce extraordinary players, like Glenn Fischtal of the Appalachian Grenadiers, who went on to become principal trumpet with the San Francisco Symphony. Hearing him play the Brandenburg Concerto was worth the price of the season subscription.

I'm pretty certain he was on the field that day in '71.

I think that Oceanside also produced drummer extraordinaire, Jack Murray too.

  8. Hamms Indians!

Yes, ONE of, if not the ONLY Active, Competing, Drum and Bugle Corps to March in the " ROSE BOWL " Parade.

( and I thought marching in "Orange Bowl" Parade with Neptune Shoreliners was Big. But a lot of Drum & Bugle Corps did Orange Bowl parade. Heck, St. Ignatis(sp) Girls from Long Island was just ahead of us that year)

Santa Clara, combined corps and alumni to march Rose Bowl one year. At 6.5 miles, not a chance !!!!!

  9. for the record...I hope it continues.

honestly, the biggest challenge for alumni corps is getting younger members in, and getting younger fans to come

Same here, Jeff. And for the record, a lot of the younger folks have to realize that just because there is snow on the roof, doesn't mean there isn't a raging fire down below.

Alumni still perform with the intensity of the competing members, just without the same endurance. Hey, getting older still stinks, but it beats the hell out of the alternative!

  10. so if the alumni show is barely breaking even......if DCA is to move and they don't get the sweetheart stadium deal like they get n Rochester.....

Depending on where the show is moved to will determine if the Alumni show continues as has always been the case. As I said earlier, not too many alumni corps are that well-heeled. Bus charters will always be the deciding factor. As it is, one bus to move Sky for the weekend, Saturday AM until Sunday PM back to Hasbrouck Heights runs us about $2500-$3000, and that's including a room for the driver and a healthy tip to cover his meals, etc.! And a lot of members drive their own cars and absorb the costs, too. No sense in our upstate crew or PA crew driving down to NJ for a bus ride up to Rochester.

  11. >>thanks, andy but your poems are better.

and in the words of the mighty pepe, "don't suck."<<

As the Senator in The Godfather requested of the brother of Frank "Frankie Five Angels" Pentangeli: "Would the gentleman please be sworn in and state his name" (close enough)

You seem to know of me (or at least my poems) ... but, I don't know who you are ... so ... although I can't recall Pepe every saying "don't suck" ... he did say: "Who are you and did you ever win The Dream" ...

    Reveal yourself ... you'll feel better ...

    :-)

I think it was Ruocco who told us "don't suck!", many years ago. It seems it has become a sort of "catch-phrase" before beginning anyone's performance! LOL

  12. Not to throw a fly into the ointment, BUT a lot of these corps also depend on the check they receive, regardless of the amount, to help off-set expenses incurred in just getting there. Trust me, not all alumni corps are well-heeled or have a sponsor with a bottomless check book. Most members pay their own way to be there to perform, and many struggle to do so, but any assistance to pay the bus bill, etc. is most welcome. Hotels, meals, liquid refreshment, etc. are on the members of each corps. That all adds up to a healthy increase in the city's income too. The DCA corps receive compensation for their performances during the season by DCA at the end of the season. Should not the alumni also receive some compensation? After all, most of the folks attending the alumni show in the afternoon have also bought tickets for the pre-lims and finals. Many of these people have told me that they come to see the alumni corps and as long as they have traveled a great distance, might as well stick around to see the BIG CORPS battle it out too.

Or does the corps just pass the hat in the parking lot or at whatever venue in which they are performing? Keep in mind that these corps are also held to the very same standards as the competing corps as to time, behavior, etc.and are subject to fines being deducted from their checks. And many of the "names" have been on the receiving end of those fines! So most of them really are on their "best behavior" so as to not jeopardize the corps' payday.

These folks LOVE to perform for an appreciative audience, but doing it for nothing will lead to the eventual demise of any drum corps, alumni or competition.

Just my thoughts on the subject, for good or bad. Let the comments commence!

  13. Sorry for the off-topic interruption here....

But if you could, please keep my brother-in-law Wayne Poulsen in your thoughts.

Wayne's been with the Caballeros Alumni corps (drum line) for the past 10 years or so... he marched with the Cabs in 1972 and '73, and also marched with the Manville Crusaders junior corps, among others.

He is seriously ill... and we could use all the positive mojo we can get.

    Thank you all.

Fran, deepest condolences on the loss of your brother-in-law. May he R.I.P.

  14. #1, CHECK

    #2, CHECK

    #3, CHECK

    #4, CHECK

To complete the assignment we'll need all 4 names...

"Who", Left to right (Would you like to name names?)

    "Where" (You got that!)

"When" (Do you remember the year?)

and for a bonus, Who took this photo (CHECK!: The one and ONLY Maurice D. Knox Jr.!)

This photo is from our Queen's collection by the way...

Scott Yaniga, Glen Johnson, Donnie Solinger and Dave Barth. I think it was '98 or '99, not sure.

  15. #1 is the former Director of Sky's Alumni ... he also marched with Sun & Sky's field corps ... Bayonne bred, but never a Bridgemen ... boxing aficionado ... all around great ... could this be the Dream Ressurection Team?

    :-)

#2 was also a member of Sky field corps, right hand man for #1 while with Sky Alumni, was a co-director with the field corps for a while, got very involved with DCA management.

#3 was a looong time member of Reading and a member of Sky Alumni for a few years. Good, reliable and loyal member with a head full of drum corps history between his ears!

#4 played with Cabs for some years and was NOT a member of Sky Alumni.

So, the common thread here is NOT the Skyliners Alumni, but the fact that each of these men marched competitively in the National Dream Contest for a LOT of years.

Photo looks like it was taken to commemorate the announcement of the return of the Dream Contest while at the WDCHoF Indoor Show held at Bergenfield High School some years back.

The obvious choice for photographer would be Tony White, but I'm going to guess the one and only Moe Knox!

    How'd I do???

  16. Not sure if this should go in DCA or Alumni but this get more traffic....

No more "doing" Drum Crops with a corps for me and not planning any huge vacation plans for a while. But my wife Kris reminded me that I have a bunch of old metal in the basement that I'm not doing ANYTHING with lol. So what I&E shows might be coming up for 2016? With enough preparation and logistics planning maybe a trip to Bridgeport or where ever would be nice. Sure should be easier than driving 350 miles to NC like this year (HS graduation) or 2 days in a stadium at Rochester....

Don't know how far you are from the Jersey Turnpike, but once you get to it, Exit 6, where it ties into the Pennsy Pike, should only take about an hour and a half or so to Exit 16W. From 16W, it's only about 10 minutes to the Post. Tony and Donna White make the trip each year from down south, so you could always consult with him too, or any of the folks from South Jersey Vagabonds.
