  1. Being that I am on Sdub guard staff, I can say it was NOT for going out of bounds. The guard stays well within bounds.

As we came on the field (no time to set yet) they began anouncing the corps. It was about 45 seconds later that the DM saluted. If anything, I think it was a bogus penalty for delay.

So it was a TV penalty? :sshh:

  2. This year I found myself glancing down to the sideline to see if corps X had amps or not. That's amplification used properly. Remember, since 2004 every corps who has amplified voices has dropped the concept the next year. The lone exception is the Cadets who went from 1st place in year 1 to 5th place in year 2.

Except for the innocuous use of amps in the pit, I fail to see a groundswell of support for amplification.

  3. It still is beyond my mind , how there is little or no movement in placings at these Finals. With all the close scoring there was/is,,, how the #### can there only be 1 or 2 corps movement between Qrtrs and Semis? It is literally IMPOSSIBLE for the same corps to perform the same way or calibur from one day to the next.

The whole thing is rigged, I swear to God it is. Really ,,Truley, For sure,,Without a doubt. And thats a fact. The odds of this happening are staggering.

No matter what DCI says. PERIOD

Plus it isn't "exciting" its BORIIIIIIIIIIIIING !!! <**>

Not every championship can have the drama of 1968. I see from your signature that you were part of the 1st to 5th (?) disaster. Looking at the years you were in Des Plaines I'd love to have traded places with you (c'mon Miami alums; humor me).

  4. I have to say in all my years I have never seen a more deserving corps and show get shafted like that. There was no way they should have placed outside of the semi cut. NO WAY. I was upset enough that I went out and donated 100.00 to Southwind. They can't hang their heads, they had a heck of a show and like everybody else your left to the mercy of the judging system. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This was a doesn't time. Good luck next year. And please do not take this as a disrespect of the Mandarins, they performed well and the judges liked them better.

I applaud your generosity. Hopefully SW has become organized enough to show their appreciation.

As for the show, to be objective, there were just that many good corps ahead of them. My own bias is that the re-hashed Southwest band shows haven't worked to their advantage. I truly hope they make a change in coordinators. They need to get back to pressing for finals, not semis. Mike is the only REAL drum corps designer there and he's doing other things. they need to get back to drum corps programming.

  5. Might have been for cadencing off.

Ironically enough, the last time finals were in Madison, SW missed semis because of a penalty.

I don't recall anything but a bass beat last night but .2 wouldn't have changed the outcome.

BTW, I believe the previous penalty was in 03 in Orlando. If I recall, devine intervention wouldn't have pushed that placement up, which was a shame because I liked that show (Gayne Ballet).

  6. also, it is pretty immature to wish a failure for a corps...seriously we aren't in middle school anymore to wish something goes wrong...these kids are performing their butts off...why would you want a technical flaw to destroy a year's work...that is pretty low...and please do not criticize the corps and members like that...and that is FOR ALL THE CORPS show some respect...

Gee, what do you do during football season?

The kids who play for FSU (for example) work their butts off too. Given the choice between their worthy opponents scoring a touchdown or throwing an interception which do you think "mature" supporters want. I'd assume that the age range for both garnet and gold teams is about the same.

Your logic fits the middle school model better. At that stage, you want the young kids/players to achieve their goals regardless of competitive considerations. At that level, you cheer on the accomplishments. I don't have the same standards for highly competitive, polished 20 year-olds, nor do they hold those standards themselves.

And a couple of "wide rights" ruined a couple of years' work. And there was a lot of criticism.

  7. Actually to brutally honest everyone is quite wrong about the singing...

To address the out of tune issues:

she was not...if you have heard the actual song, which I'm sure many of you have not, it is dead on...

what my point is...the singer, who is an amazing young woman, is singing exactly as the composer of the song wants it to be sung...the language is made up....there are no words...it is a mix of middle-eastern and western sounds clashing to form just rising melodies...honestly...she is doing great....it's just that many people do not understand or know what she is singing...because oh wait...you aren't supposed to...i hope you all complained about gladiator and lisa gerrard....if not...stop complaining about this young woman...do NOT belittle her, JUST because you do NOT understand....

So if I wasn't so stupid, I'd KNOW that her part is dissonance, not out of tune? Don't you think that's risk beyond acceptability. Putting a dissonant phrase on a controversial "instrument"?

  8. You're wrong. :P

Well...as for out of tune...I DO think you are wrong.

As for bbbling...the song is akin to something by Enya, so there are not supposed to be real words sung.

First of all, I wish I could actually say that I know Enya so I could do a Lloyd Bentsen and say "she's no Enya', but alas, she's just not very good with that piece, and she was out of tune last night.

What really scared me was the intensity of His Georgeness pacing the sidelines, mouthing lyrics and applauding where there were no spectacular moves. Kind of like watching Nixon's resignation speech, waiting for something crazy to happen.

I was waiting for the inevitable train wreck with the amplification. To my regret, it never occurred.........darn!

One question, for the vast majority of corps who only use amps for the pit: Why do they need a soundboard? It looked bizarre seeing the Glassmen soundboard operator (and several others) mixing away. Did they really have to balance marimba 2 with the tymps and re-mix for the chimes?

  9. Hey all:

Just caught the recaps...Harvey Wingo at the gate with Timing and Penalties.

It takes me back to all the shows...Joe Courtney and Harvey Wingo...DCM/DCI's version of Miami Vice. :P Their secret weapon was Tootsie Rolls on the sidelines...they secretly knew it...every staff's weakness...the dreaded Tootsie.

So give it up for Harvey! A real American Hero. Mr. Timing and Penalty Guy! I'll look him up on Saturday and tell him he's got a fan club. With a last name like Wingo, a man is just asking for a fan club.

    Take care.

I knew Harvey & his lovely Lois in the good old days of St, Louis drum corps. I even recall a late night drive through some scary Alabama countryside together. I'll see you sometime this week, Harvey.

  10. It's a personal message...in a blog.

I feel sorry for her loss, but if someone blogged the death of a family member, I'd be pretty furious. Pretty #### furious, because it's a family matter and not DCP's business. Or Cadet fans business. Or whatever.

Just a thought. It's none of my business.

    Agree totally!

  11. What about CRYSTALLLL!!!!

She can yell VANGUARD too (I will, however pummel anyone who yells CRYSTALL).

I LOVE THIS. I remember how I, and apparently most of the rest of the audience, progressed in Boston last year.

    Quarterfinals: afterthought

    Semis: slightly more gusto

Finals: measured on the Richter scale

  12. no, not for me... Here's the scoop

A friend of mine who marches with me in the Sonic Lancers here in Japan will be taking a trip to New York to watch the DCA championships. The guy is around 40-44 I think and is our lead sopranoist. He also was a sopranoist for the Yokohama Inspires when they were at DCA (forgot which year though, might have been both years). AND, he's a HUGE fan of the Empire Statesmen.

But anyhow, he has his ticket, car rental, hotel reservation... but he'll be traveling alone. If there is anyone who might be interested in hanging out with a fellow Japanese sopranoist for the weekend, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll put you guys into contact via e-mail. He does speak a fair amount of English, so not too many worries there.

If anyone can assist, thanks :)

Any chance he can bring a couple of the Inspires guard members with him? They left me a changed man. :worthy:

  13. Here we go again, another moronic post by a bando poser wannabee DC expert. Myron is one of the finest people in the activity. He is not only one of the top drill designers in the country, but if you have ever watched him work a corps it wouldn’t take you long to realize he is capable of cleaning horns and percussion as well as drill. He is also a great motivational speaker. He has more DC knowledge in his colon then the quoted poser could ever hope to have. Sometimes these bando DC experts posts are good for a laugh, other times I just want to insert my foot in their...

This kid has had a chip on his shoulder about Myron for some time now. He erupts about every 6 months with another anti-Rosander hairball.

Note to Sparky: I don't care how fast your band could run, you've never marched drum corps. You have no right criticizing the alumni of SCV or any other competing corps from any generation.

  14. Dan Spalding is a great guy! I studied orchestral conducting with him for three semesters of independent study in college.

He never liked to talk too much of his drum corps past...but once in a while I could get him to share some stories:-)

I did enjoy his tales of woe from teaching the Offensive Lions in Quebec. Nice corps for a couple of years. Dan's signature high sticking line. They had one linguistic adventure after another.

  15. From Miami; Through the years:

    Ed Burke

    Bill Hayes

    #### (I'd better say Richard) Filkins

    #### (Also Richard) Klund

    Val Capone

    Sunrisers:

    Mike DeLorenzo

    Reilly Alumni:

    Carl "Govie" Place

And, I know what you mean, Jeff. I had the honor of working for Robbie (Zo) & Charlotte Robinson (and their little dog too) at the Crossmen and (take the good with the bad) Len Halliburton at Belleville.

Can't run all those credits without adding my heroes:

    Frank Pamper: Des Plaines Vanguard

Hugh Mahon: Garfield Cadets (Hey Huey - you remember that I named my baby after your daughter Colleen? Mine just turned 31 b**bs )
