  1. What kind of weather can we expect at that time of year in Rochester?

    COLD I would expect.~sighs~

I don't mind cool nights, that way I get a chance to wear my corps jacket. It's so hot here in Texas that the only time I get to wear it is between late November and early February.

  2. So I'v noticed that all the Pearl drums I see have simple single color wraps on the drums. Plain, Black, Blue, etc. The only exception I can think of is SCV with the wood grains. So does Pearl limit what the corps they sponsor can do with their drums as far as color or is it just that the corps just happened to want simple drum finishes? Personally, simple is my own preference. I think Cadets and CC are too busy. Bluecoats have a nice look this year, SCV as well. One of my favorites was the Cadets Bronze they had around 2003

If you look on VicFirth.com for the "In the Lot" pictures, you will see a number using Pearl drums with nonstandard finishes.

  3. Hey to everybody, from steamy Houston Texas. I'm an old L.S.U. bass drummer from the late 70's-early 80's. Never marched in a corps because of the travel schedule and dislike of long bus rides. I guess marching in a huge corps style college marching band was enough to satisfy me. Still miss marching after all these years and always attend at least one DCI show every summer...............

Of course, you know Gulf Coast Sound is always an option...

  4. Can you wear the drums with these on?

I'm pretty certain that you can. These covers are made for "marching" drums, not drums that sit on stands.

  5. I knew there was something called drum and bugle corps but had never seen one. I didn't even know about DCI until I got to college. After finishing my marching band career in 1981, I settled into retirement until approximately late 2000 when my oldest daughter started high school.

The band director and one of the assistant band directors were friends and bandmates of mine in college and wanted me to help out with the drumline. Being 20 years removed from the activity, I searched the city for someone to help me get back into playing shape. As a result of my search, I stumbled across Bayou City Blues Senior Drum & Bugle Corps here in Houston, TX. To my surprise, the corps had been under my nose (so to speak) all this time and I didn't realize it. Unfortunately, shortly after I joined, the corps became inactive. However, this new corps, Gulf Coast Sound, made up of former BCB members, was preparing to put a group on the field. And the rest is history. This will be our third year competing at the DCA Championships.

  6. I just got back from watching Frontier's first full run of their show and I want to let the rest of the DCA community know that they are light years ahead of where they were last year. Though it's still rough around the edges and they have a few holes left in the soprano and baritone line, the hornline sounds great, good center of pitch and several excellent soloist. The guard is coming along very nicely and the drumline is also greatly improved (and bigger) than before. Their show titled "Fire" is very well crafted musically and visually and will be a crowd favorite. The mellophone section will also raise some eyebrows as they will probably be one of the best mello lines in DCA.

Also I visited Gulf Coast Sound in Houston a few months ago and they are also greatly improved with a nice sounding hornline and a killer drumline with some killer charts!

DCA is alive and very well in Texas!

Good to hear that Frontier is doing so well. Look forward to cheering for you in the Finals in Roc. Wouldn't it be great if two Texas corps made Finals? One in Open Class and one in Class A...

  7. This may have been stated before in the many pages of responses, but isn't it called "Drum and Bugle Corps?" If you added woodwinds, it would have to be called "marching band."

In all honesty, woodwinds are not really outdoor instruments. Throughout history they have been used in close quarters or indoors.

  8. No offense to Jr. Corps. Alright, I've been in 4 Corps in my life and would like to fly my colors appropriately. I would like 1 jacket to wear with a BD patch a Blue Knights and Renegades patch. Kinda like an alumni Jacket with the patch and years on back. Does anyone here have anything like that? I sure would like see some pictures if you do. Trav

One of the guys that marches with me in Gulf Coast Sound marched in a Chinese Junior Corps in California back in the early 70s. He has his junior corps patch (a circular patch about six inches across) on the right chest side of his GCS corps jacket. His GCS member and DCA competition patches are on his sleeves. He is the only one that I have seen do something like that.

  9. Don't wait too long and miss out on a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the 2006 edition of Gulf Coast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps of Houston, Texas. GCS is still looking for sopranos, drummers and pit people to fill out its 2006 roster. The corps needs about two or three more sops, one snare drummer, one bass drummer and two or more front ensemble members.

The next camp is scheduled for May 6. GCS will also be featured at the Drum Corps Tigers BBQ Fundraiser this Saturday. Get all the details about GCS at http://www.gulfcoastsound.org. Details about the Drums Corps Tigers BBQ can be found at http://www.drumcorpstigers.com.
