  1. On second thought, I'll go ahead and ask a mod to close this thread. It was all tongue-in-cheek anyway for a slow thursday morning/afternoon. Like I said, it was a joke and no harm would have been intended and I wouldn't want it to go further than it should.

We have an announced percussion addition to discuss anyway. :thumbs-up:

    :laughing::blink: :blink: :cry: :cry

BOA / WGI is not DCI

  2. Is it just me or everybody thought it was an amazingly ran show with everything beeing perfect? Next to Hurcs, I don't know any corps that had a good rehearsal facility. It always has been that way at that show...what don't they understand? No pun intended to the members...they just perform and do what they are told. But two thumbs down, way down to the Hurcs organization. Reminds me of stories my dad tells me about DCA back in the 70's! I hope the corps I will be marching with next summer won't be going to that show so I won't have to drive 8 hours to the richest State and practice in the crappiest facilities...

    Thank you Hurcs!

The POINT that when you hold a show and use the stadium to rehearse in you better have great facilities for your OTHER corps.

Is justified. Not saying this happened . Its just good organization.

    Its your home show .

    you are not traveling .

take care of the corps that are.

also I heard this from a friend at the show.

Hurcs gave out 3 caption awards at retreat.

drum major -not sure who won

    color guard -hurcs

    percussion -hurcs

    missing

    high brass- empire

    high GE empire

High GE IS NOT REGULARLY GIVEN OUT BUT SKIPPING HIGH BRASS ????????

I did not attend this show . Way too far . Can someone give a heads up to the volatility of this statement.

  3. hm...looking forward to the day when LL, THE ORIGINAL, and dcifan2002 are all banned for having multiple accounts but actually being the same person...which I believe violates the DCP rules.

*Note - I don't actually wish that, but its not really wise to have multiple accounts...you can and will be banned for it.

I guess jamesjones0611 and hostrauser are the same also ?

Just because people have opinions . That differs from you , don't bash or make personnel attacks. That is against DCP rules .

    Please..

    WA. MAHOI. PMM

    get it LL ?

    LMAO

  4. Not what I was referring to, and the post was in jest. As if being a DCI Show Coordinator is a career in and of itself.

Fine, you don't like my show ideas. But there's no need to be snide. It's still okay to be nice in disapproval, EVEN ON THE WEB!

Besides, this is supposed to be an exercise in fun. I was the first person *I* saw online suggest Copland's "Organ Symphony" and Vaughan Williams' "Sinfonia Antartica," and within a couple of years both of those pieces showed up on the field with SCV and Pacific Crest, respectively. Coincidence? Probably. But, if a member of a DCI staff gets even one idea from my shows, even if I never know about it, that's enough for me. If I see ANY of the pieces I've suggested that have never been performed before make it to the field, that's enough. Whether they got the idea from this thread or not is almost irrelevant.

I doubt DCI programmers get idea's from DCP.

    but --OK.

    have fun.

  5. The way in which you continue to return to this well, one might easily conclude that you're actually endeavoring to permanently harm the Scouts!

I'm not about to allow you to waltz in hear and attempt to hijack 70+ years of legendary Madison Scout history by continuing to pile on.......

How would you like it if the people in your life never forgave you and always continued to judge you upon a handful of past decisions. Would you be relishing the fact that those closest to you judged your entire life's body of work based upon one mistake.......That would be the definition of evil now wouldn't it!

    WOW.

Do you really think a post on DCP will permanently harm a organization ?

    I think not.

  6. Ahem... if this thread is titled Madison Scouts 2010, why are you still rehashing prior years? Let the trolls be, and let's stop looking backwards! Nothing good can come out of putting blinders on and focusing on the mistakes from the past. Trolls will be trolls, and they're just looking to pi$$ you guys off.

The ultimate "win" here would be to help the Scouts build a stronger organization, on and off the field, so they can kick butt in future seasons, including 2010. If you truly want to silence the trolls, show them that this can be done.

THEN START WITH OFF THE FIELD.

Getting the corps BACK to the class act we once knew.

I am not talking about show , score , or placements.

  7. While lots of corps have used Don Ellis, it seems like it's always the same charts. Strawberry Soup is the obvious one, but also Niner Two, ###### Wiggle Stomp, Final Analysis, and Open Wide. That's just scratching the surface. I'd love to see a corps explore some unused charts, like Tears of Joy, Invincible (I'd die to hear a corps match the solo from this piece), How's This Openers?, 33 222 1 222 (just try marching that!), Future Feature, Arcturus, and more.

    CROSSMEN ???

    :thumbup::blink: :blink:

  8. Too much the same? I count in excess of three dozen selections in my shows that have NEVER been performed in DCI. Have you even heard "Thalaba the Destroyer" or "The Lake at Evening" (or "Silmarian Meanderings," or Jacques Ibert's--NOT Camille Saint-Saens'--"Bacchanale")?

Too much the same? Blue Devils doing a show based on Carnivale? Carolina Crown putting an ancient Roman orgy on the field (well, figuratively)? The Cadets doing a show based on a novel about the comic book business in 1940s New York? Vanguard doing a show about the Aegean isles? When were those shows performed? Sure, some of the choices (Scouts show, specifically) were designed to put a new, fresh twist on a corps' traditional style, but I think a lot of the shows are pretty original.

I also counted only about nine or ten pieces that are wind ensemble music, out of the 62 selections listed.

I'm happy to accept constructive criticism, but I'm going to have to side with those who have come to my defense: you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about here.

Thats a lot of Music and sort of is ALL the same.

    I agree.

It's an OK list but I don't see any corps using it. so maybe LL does know what he is talking about for once.

Don't quit your day job and leave the programing to the staff's.

  9. easy now...

thats my college band director and professor you're talking about bud.

i can assure you that Dr. Yozviak is quite a proficient composer and arranger as far as drum corps is concerned.

    sorry ,

    did not mean to offend.

I am sure he is a great professor at college.

but as far as drum corps is concerned he was not .

    1 year and out.

  10. I Brought My Girlfriend to a Marching Band Show and She Didn’t Break Up With Me

by Jeff Clark in From The Field »

There are a few things you should never bring up on a first date:

You have a moving truck on reserve for Sunday morning in case this date goes well.

You need to call it a night since your cat’s performance of Les Miserables is at 7am.

You spent last weekend at a marching band competition.

Since you and I are not on a first date right now (although the way you look at me makes me wonder your intentions), I feel OK telling you that I spent last weekend at a marching band comepetion.

    And it. Was. AWESOME.

Last weekend, the Boston Crusaders hosted a small Drum Corps show in Lawrence, Mass. Drum Corps (for those unfamiliar with toe-roll and pops-to-the-box) is like major league marching band, but without the steroids, gold chains or fantasy leagues.*

My Very Pretty Girlfriend™, being from a music family, is not a music person. Being a field hockey player, she understands competition but not how a bunch of dudes wearing doofy hats walking around in unison on a football field can be competitive (or fun to watch).

So I brought her along to experience my little guilty pleasure.

Being that this-here blog is read by music people, I think it’s safe to assume that most of the people reading this blog were probably in their high school band. And if you were in your school’s marching band, you understand the time and effort that it takes to put together a 10-minute show throughout the fall.** Multiply the hours and heat by 10 and now you’re starting to understand what it’s like to march in a drum corps. It’s hardcore. (Hard corps? eh?)

The show started off with an exhibition performance by a senior corps – made up of members who are too old to compete with their corps and lead normal lives otherwise. They didn’t move and were (understandably) not as polished as a World Class corps. At the risk of hurting a few feelings (send complaints here), the exhibition was pretty boring. This was MVPG™’s first show at a drum corps competition and her comment to me during their performance has been redacted by the Sonicbids management. It wasn’t what you would consider a “positive” remark.

But then something incredible happened. And that something incredible was The Crossmen*** from San Antonio, TX. Their show started out with a loud, fast hit that gave me goosebumps immediately. Their ballad was slow and awesome. Their finale brought everyone to their feet. MVPG™ ate it up and from then on, compared every other corps to The Crossmen.

Corps after corps performed and she would go on about how x and y were great, but they weren’t better than The Crossmen. She would hold her breathe when the guard’s rifles went in the air and clap for a great soloist. We made plans to travel to the 2010 Allentown, PA show before the fourth corps had even stepped off. She was finally understanding why I had been so excited for this one night.

Unfortunately, The Crossmen didn’t win that night (MVPG™ says they were robbed). But in addition to seeing some great performances by Phantom Regiment, Madison Scounts, Boston Crusaders, Colts, Jersey Surf and Spirit, I feel like I can finally watch a random corp’s peformance on my laptop without feeling her silently judging me from the other end of the couch.

If MVPG™ can get pumped about a drum corps show, you can too. The 2009 season ended with the DCI World Championships on Saturday night, but next summer there will be more than 200 corps performing all around the country that would love for you to give them a chance at giving you goosebumps.
