  1. Success...

    –noun

    1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.

    2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

    3. a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.

    4. a person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show.

    5. Obsolete . outcome.

    Keep it up!

  2. All I can say after reading this topic is.... Thank GOD I am retired from competitive drum and bugle corps. It is crap like this that takes a lot of enjoyment out of the activity... In my own opinion of course. Best of luck to all competitive corps who still have the sanity to continue on.

  3. I was hooked by first and foremost my Father as he was a Soprano player in the Field Corps since 1994, but what really solidified me was after watching a Sky Field Corps rehearsal at the Garfield Anthrax and biological weapons disease manufacturing plant....Ummmmm I mean the Garfield American Legion Post. Bobby (Jomba) O'Connor showed me a few things on a drum pad (holding the sticks, etc) and for some reason, it felt that this corps could be one of the best things in my life. Although my first time around the Skyliners was actually at an Alumni Corps rehearsal at the same, and some how still open, physical location of just about every Violation of Federal Health Code regulation, back in 1998. I was about 7 or 8 at the time and screwing around with my brother Harry on the stage during horn line rehearsal.

What I remember most about that rehearsal in '98 was afterwards before going back home, I remembered seeing a TV trailer for the Samuel L. Jackson's version of Shaft. Then I saw Ricky Lane for the first time and some how made the connection and thought he was Shaft. I told my dad this when I thought of it and I thought that no one else would have heard, but someone did and that is how Ricky Lane got the nickname "Shaft".

  4. true,.............but nothing is perfect either,................thing can always improve, or evolve with the times and circumstances,..................ideas are worth exchanging, even from the armchair,..................IMO

Also, there are more corps springing up around the country who are going competitive that DCA needs to accommodated. Better to start reviewing all the options and drafting as many contingencies sooner than have an influx of non northeast competitive corps gun for the title. Not to mention the foreign corps who come in as well.

  5. Hi Jimmy ... just to clarify ... I'm not advocating eliminating any corps from the Championship ... just have a single Championship vs. Prelims and Finals ... see you at Sky Alumni in January ...

    :-)

Neither am I by any means. All I meant was that there are so many corps today it might be a little more fair for all corps instead of those who have a history of being on top. It seems logical to me that corps should have an average score and a by-week the last weekend before championships so the corps could be placed accordingly for Finals. Reason for the by-week is that the corps that do qualify will have one full weekend to completely clean EVERYTHING they need to to have the best possible show during the championship competition. Also, it will save corps who know ahead of time that they won't be able to qualify for finals throughout the season the time and money traveling all the way to the championship venue just to be turned away during prelims... See ya in January good sir.

    B-)

  6. So ... I've thought about this topic a lot ... and I have to ask the question that in this day and age and with the current composition of the number of corps that compete in Class A and Open Class, why is a Prelim contest needed any more? Other than DCA (the Corps) getting revenue from another ticket sale at Prelims, I just don't see a need if all that is being done is eliminating one or two corps ...

Long gone are the days of the 2-day VFW/AL Prelims format featuring 30-50 corps ... I'm sure the staffs would love to concentrate on rehearsing for a single performance rather than two on the weekend ...

By eliminating Prelims for both classes, we open up the weekend to other options for Mini and Alumni, which have been expressed throughout this thread ... eliminating Prelims also allows seeding to make sense (IMO) ...

    Friday

    Day - corps arrive/rehearse

Evening - I&E - the start time can be moved back to 7:00 from 5:00 allowing for more to arrive and participate

Lete Evening - Block Party – no pressure, all out fun (works for Roch - not sure about Annapolis and beyond)

    Saturday

    11:00 – WDCHOF Luncheon

2:00 pm – Mini Corps Championship (gives them their own venue)

    7:00 pm – Class A Championship

    Sunday

12:00 – Alumni Spectacular (gets them out of the 10:00 start)

7:00 pm – Open Class Championship

Again ... just thoughts like everyone else has expressed ... sorry if I missed any significant components ... I come from the era of Prelims and Finals held on a single day ... but, with all the concerns and ideas posted to enhance the "total" DCA weekend - and all the seeding pros/cons, I just don't see the need to have prelims in this day and age ... one and done ... give everybody their own space ...

    :-)

I like it. Instead of a Preliminary Competition, just take the average of the scores the corps have received throughout the season. The best 10 corps with the highest over all score average get to compete in championships. (for corps scoring the same averages, the corps who has been competing longer in the season is moved above the less exposed corps.) This gives people more time to enjoy the weekend and a bigger motivator for corps to perform better through out the season.

From what I remember, corps score averages started around the beginning of August to determine their placement times for the Preliminary Contest. Instead of beating a horse to death, take the first show score and all following scores up until the last contest before Finals weekend and include that within the average.

  7. Lest we forget Jeff, a majority of the world OUTSIDE of DCA most likely has never heard of DCA unless they come from families who have been fans or have marched there in the past. about 80% of the people who asked what it was still consider it to be like the movie drumline. The other 20% really don't know unless you bring up names like Blue Devils or ScoJo's lick of the week. A lot of the younger people around my age group see the top ranking DCI corps as "drum corps" and don't really acknowledge lower class DCI corps let alone DCA corps. So it puts DCA corps against the wall in a way to contend in the activity as a whole.

Or so I have witnessed

  8. Well you just lost ANY credibility in my book and I'm going to guess in a bunch of others as well. Telling a 40 year old to go back to romper room?? You most certainly couldn't have been referring to yourself then when you said men and women were trying to talk intelligently.

Maybe if you put your hearing aid in and your eye glasses on you would see it's not marching band people as you would so like to blame, but drum corps people working with marching bands, who have brought these changes into both venues....

What? Don't like it when the insults you toss out are directed right back at you?

You are behind the times. It was already made a couple of years ago. Come on ~ if you want to talk trash at least be up on what's going on....

You have a lot of good points. I have seen first hand all age corps going more so to high schools rather than colleges to fill their ranks. With the ever continuing budget cut backs towards music education in public schools, and funds disappearing from corps themselves, there has to be some kind of an impass. It boils down to the administration for each organization questioning their needs and sacrifices for the survival for their corps. If it means changing from G to Bb, then it has to be done. If they see people wanting to go to a corps who have already started adapting what "traditionalists" believe does not belong in the activity, than more corps might have to hop on the "band wagon" (pun intended) and evolve to gain the membership. Music and Fashion evolve in a massive circle. I for one believe there needs to be a definitive line between what my definition of drum and bugle corps from when I started almost a decade ago, and to the evolved activity it is now and is becoming down the road but in order for the survival of the organization. Sacrifices need to be made.... Who knows, maybe if drum corps follows the pattern of popular music and fashion, their might just be a rebirth of what we call "traditional" drum corps or even"Alumni style" drum corps on the competitive field. But in the mean time We still have a solid handful of alumni corps to preserve the history of not just their individual corps, but for drum and bugle corps in general.

<----- to forward progress without forgetting our roots.

  9. It looks like things are already starting to get under way very fast this year with both competitive and alumni corps hitting the ground running. Personally, I can't wait to get behind a drum again this year for the first time since 2007 and enjoy my hobby. Best of luck to all corps this coming season!

  10. No one "has to tour all summer long". And DCI has a participation review committee and a tour schedule coordinator, both of whom work with the corps to develop tour schedules that are within the corps' means.

Oh, OK....in that sense, yes, there are a number of reasons why a corps striving for world-class top 12 would want to tour quite a bit. They need lots of shows just for the experience; they also need exposure to the judges to get more credit for what they're doing and to refine their programs to address judge feedback; and they need the extra motivation that competition provides. So for corps at that level, we are probably not going to be able to talk them out of their touring practices.

OK. I think what is needed for local/regional operating models is more corps. The more corps we have, the less they have to travel to create viable contests. (Competitive parity would help there too.) I'm not sure we can ask DCI to "create" more corps....but they should make it their focus to create an atmosphere conducive to growth. Every change in rules and policies should be evaluated on the basis of the impact it would have on the corps population. Any proposal that increases cost or raises the barrier to entry should require greater justification before being implemented.

One specific thing DCI might consider doing is establishing permanent regional focus events that are open to open-class. Looking back historically, the local/regional corps seemed to do better when the major events in their area were kept in the same location and general time frame year after year. Corps at that level thrived in the days when World Open, U.S. Open, AIO, Key to the Sea, etc., were held annually in fixed locations. When the focus shifted to DCI Championships and DCI regionals that moved dramatically from year to year, the local/regional level corps involved in those events couldn't adjust. Eventually, regional circuit championships re-established that annual focus event....but the end of those regional circuits ended those shows as well.

Implementing this idea may be as simple as letting a few more corps into existing shows (i.e. allow all Texas corps into San Antonio). Or it might require format adjustments (i.e. a Saturday afternoon block in Allentown to accomodate the Northeast's open-class units). Or a re-branding of an existing event (i.e. the final California show keeps the lineup of four world-class and all the West's open-class and all-age units, but is marketed as a focus event).

Something like this might be able to benefit the DCA circuit as well. Being a non-tour/weekend warrior type breed, the members do not have the time nor the money to sustain a drive like most DCI corps can. If possible, could a moderator please have this topic open in BOTH DCA and DCI forums?

  11. Then why do we have a " DISCUSSION " forum? Hence the name.

I apologize if what I said would be open for misinterpretation.... To a lot of people perception is reality... If you go onto a "discussion" forum and see nothing but rumors, slander, etc., about a corps and that might drive people away and reflect the organization negatively because those why may participate in negative "discussion" may be seen as a representative for that corps. All I meant really is for people who dare navigate "discussion" forums, to exercise caution.

Again, sorry for any possible confusion.

CAUTION!!!! DO NOT USE DRUM CORPS PLANET FORUMS WHILE NURSING, PREGNANT, OR TAKING PRESCRIPTION BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION. IF SIDE EFFECTS OF DRUM CORPS PLANET LAST LONGER THAN 4 HOURS, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR.

  12. I think that it might happen if done the right way. Lets say you break it down into 4 regions. North East, South, Mid West, and West. In that you have a regional championship to not only coin the champion drum corps for that region, but for the regional champ to compete in the DCA National Championship. Have one for class A and one for Open Class. That way the corps won't pressured to travel across the country in order to qualify for the current title contest we have now. It should be able to help the corps that are still active now keep afloat in these bad economic times, as well as give starting corps or those who are struggling to maintain their edge. Essentially the ONLY corps that would be doing a "tour" that would essentially cost them a lot of money would be the Regional Champs who have to travel to where the National Contest is going to be. And hell, if you win your regional title, but not the national title, you are still a champion in your region.

  13. So let's let the rumors stop...

Unfortunately this is one of those topics where it will have a hefty amount of rumors going around (much like 98.999999999% of topics on DCP).

IMO I believe that regardless of whether you are doing great, stable, or on the verge of total chaos, one of the best things you can do is to LIMIT access on sites like these to just staff announcements. And even then, have them be linked from the DCP main site. That way what people see is what they get, and if they are honestly curious about the status of the corps, they will find a means to track down suitable information rather than look on sites like this where there are more rumors than fact. (This is not a total knock on DCP forums... Just look on a few topics and see how quickly they go off topic, slander someone or some organization, start unnecessary drama between people, etc.)

I hope that the corps who are in situations like Cru, Brigs, Sky (only mentioning because it has been a few years since being on the field), etc will have at least a Board of Directors or some sort of organized and determined staff that will not be afraid to take the necessary risks to better the organization.

Best of luck and I hope to see a return to the field for a lot of veteran corps.
