  1. So far so good. Thank you all for contributing. I have also thought on numerous occasions what you all have expressed. I believe that the first fundamental is a family oriented atmosphere. And I am not talking about mom and dad with the kids, I am talking about members from the past as well as the present. Those who have seen and experienced the different eras of drum corps. It is there that the future generations of the corps' can get a solid understanding about what they are participating in. All to common is where change occurs and it drives the older more experienced members away because they do not like the way it is going. And unfortunately for the newer members, they know little about where they are and who they are. I was fortunate to have been around past generations of Skyliners dating all the way back to the FOUNDING members of the Skyliners. I learned a lot from members of all the generations of Sky from the 40's and prior, all the way through the 90's and helping to continue that history until I enlisted into the Marines. Through them, I was able to share the history of my drum corps to those of my generation. And it is with that, I believe that it is necessary for as many of the Alumni of ALL drum corps to stay with their corps no matter the style change of the period. It will be more of help in ensuring the knowledge about their corps will be continued.

Another is competition. No matter if it is competition corps or alumni corps, there is always going to be a level of competition. If not for score, for bragging rights. I firmly believe that the competition should be left on the field where it belongs. And the staff of the corps as well as other members need to keep themselves in check to help prevent any issues off the field. Yes we are playing for a championship. But we are at times too indulged by the thought of winning that we sometimes take it too far and it effects the corps in other aspects (more often than not in a negative way). One thing that could definitely help boost the corps in the eyes, hearts, and minds of others (not just fans but other corps as well) is to help out other corps. Example, for those who know drum corps history, Sky and Cabs have always had beef with one another. For one reason or another it was there. What if, Skyliners were walking in the parking lot and noticed that some Cabs members were having issue loading the truck. Those Skyliners went to help the Cabs by helping them load the truck. Then later down the road, some Skyliners were having some equipment issues and were in a bad way. The Cabs come by and notice that they could be of assistance. The Cabs help Sky. Reason for saying this is that yes according to the judges we are battling for a championship. But off the field, we are all the same under the uniform. We have pride in our corps but we also have pride in each other knowing what it means to do what we do. And this should be extended to each corps regardless of past events.

One other thing I want to touch on is priority. Yes the role of competitive corps is to win. But there are various forms of success. I believe that a main reason that people are not flocking the way they used to to see drum corps shows is because they are not entertained anymore. And that is an issue. Yes people like to see competition and to see the best performance possible. I talked to fans of all ages and the older ones always said the same thing. "Drum corps in the past was overall better because each corps had their own individual style. Now, it feels like the same. No individuality. Just the same, almost stereotypical, 'modern drum corps'. A lot often comment how soon it will no longer be drum corps but more expensive marching bands. Once the fans see too much of the same thing, they stop going. Or if they see a corps who is very entertaining get bad scores time and time again, they stop going. The activity is too judge/score oriented. And trying to keep up with the "norm" is driving those who pay to see us away. I believe that we have the power to start a revolution in drum corps history. To help change the way the activity is going and to bring that spark back with a powerful burst. Too many corps sound the same anymore. Example I played a recording of 2006 Prelims for some of my friends down here in Birmingham, AL. These people had no prior knowledge of DCA or Drum corps in general. After listening to all the corps, they response was the same all around. "They all sounded the same." and "Boring at times". Then I played a recording of 70's drum corps for them. The response was the same all around. "This is really cool." and "I wish that they would play more stuff like this." And that is by listening alone. Imagine what it would be like if I had video recordings of back then and today to provide in an actual case study. The fans don't lie. And out of the fans comes our future members.

Please continue to contribute your thoughts as to how we can make the activity better. Thanks for all the contributions. Please lets keep it going.

  2. In the ever evolving activity know as drum corps, there have been many changes that have either been a positive success or utter failure. What would honestly be in the best interest for not only competitive corps as well as alumni corps in terms of ongoing success?

*Please keep in mind that this topic is open to ALL opinions. I do ask that there please be no targeting individuals or corps' in a negative matter. I also request that all matters not pertaining to this topic please be discussed privately via Private Messaging. Please keep this topic civil.*

Regardless whether you have been involved in the activity 2 seconds, 2 minutes, 2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years, 2 decades, or 2 centuries; we are all part of drum corps past, present, and future. Without us, drum corps will be no more.

Fans on drum corps planet who have no experience in a corps are also entitled to voice their opinions. For it is you, the fans whom truly decides the fate of drum corps. Without the fans, we are nothing.

How can we improve Drum Corps?

  3. Had a back and forth with the grunt off line. Ended very amicably. He'll do fine. And thanks for the kind words Don.

Just for the record, my intentions were not to anger anyone but at times my "attack mode" comes out and I fly off the handle. I apologize to anyone who took offence to my previous posts. Now on to the show. Speaking of which, Los Americanos are making a comeback? And is there a confirmed roster of corps who have gone inactive as of today? Every day I hear more and more aren't able to make it out this year.

  4. For one last and final time, IF ANYONE HAS ANY OFFENSE OR NEEDS TO DISPUTE THINGS FURTHER, DO SO BY PRIVATE MESSAGES! People getting annoyed and set off by opinions of others and arguing back and forth will not help ANYTHING! If at all, it only makes things worse. No one helps their corps by openly badmouthing and continuing disputes in public. Stay on topic and either take the beefs to the private messages or STAY AWAY FROM IT! With every second people spend on arguing over crap on forums, music could be memorized and drill could be perfected.

  5. here's some history. and i don't say this to anger anybody. back in the day the real bad ##### were reilly raiders. they made sky look tame. so what? it was the way it was back then but ya know there were good people in that corps. same as sky. and ya kow every corps had some people that were bad #####. like i said before i had an issue in 72 and it was resolved. i hold no malice for any corps. and when one goes under it hurts the entire activity. the hurcs, cabs everybody had issues at one time or another. go on the guess who thread. we were all big competitors back in the day but we're all friends now. that stuff is long dead and gone. it served no purpose back then and nobody should feel bad feelings for another corps. what we learned was we needed each other. and right now the way corps are dropping off you all need each other. if drum corps is to survive then you all need to ease up. just my thoughts. but what do i know?

Very well said. And to piggy back, it is very important to any corps who wishes to be successful is to not forget what happened in the past as well as not hold a grudge. There are not that many drum corps people who understand what happened in the past and how it implies to their corps. A lot of them are kids who have no other experience but in school marching bands. It is important to teach the new members not just the notes on the page and how to march drill the way the staff wants, but the history of the corps they are marching in both good and bad. Yea your corps may have won every title known to drum corps but that doesn't matter if people only associate the name to a parking lot slug fest 3 plus decades ago. Knowledge is power and history is fundamental.

Now to hop back on the train of thought.

Speaking of which, saw a clip of the Sun Devils and it sounds good. I wish them as well as ALL corps the best of luck on the field, and to those sidelined for now a speedy recovery.

  6. Nah, I've just never been able to understand why corps are afraid to release what their numbers look like before they hit the field. We're gonna find out eventually. I don't honestly think that any corps would work harder or less depending on what their competitors are fielding, right?

I know that if I were in charge of a corps I would keep as much hush hush as possible and unleash the beast at the first public appearance! And with the way MOST drum corps planet topics go, I really don't feel like the frigging nay sayers starting crap as usual and turning an informative topic into a mudslinging party...

  7. SKY with all their past bravado/bullyrudeness....makes me feel vindicated that in 2010 they are all but defunct(sorry but its how I feel)

Sure Sky may have their time in the past where their "bullyrudness" clashed with other corps, but back then, they weren't the ONLY corps. And it is really shallow to still hold a grudge to this day. Some way, in some form, SOMEONE will have that attitude. But just throwin' something like that from left field was really unnecessary. If you approach the Skyliners either be in the competition corps, alumni corps, or chorus, you will see that those attitudes are not around. And a lot of members from corps other than the Skyliners from that time don't feel that way anymore either. It is expressions like that with the grudge barring attitude that doesn't help improve the activity.

~This is just my own opinion and if I have offended anyone I apologize. For those who know me, I am a Skyliner. I bleed red and black until the day I die. And TRUE Skyliners taught me that no matter who I am with, what I am, or where I am, you show the up most respect for your fellow Drum Corps men and women in every uniform. Any personal beef's you settle out of uniform and man to man. NOT in public. And if you still have a grudge, keep it to yourself.

    * I please request out of respect for Mr. Kulp, The Skyliners, and every drum corps around the world, do not turn this topic into another slander-fest. Please keep to the original theme of the topic and to dispute via PM's.

To be honest with you Sayre, I still think it is early to say. I mean with top ranking corps like Corps Vets still holding percussion auditions, and membership still dwindling all over the country, this is going to be a very interesting season. I wish nothing but success and a quick solution to all issues and hopes that the economy and other factors decide in the Corps' favors.

Hope all is well with you and your family!

  8. I joined the Skyliners at 13 years old, got my 5 year ring (tattooed on my right shoulder) at age 18. Now I am back in the civilian world and an official member of the Garbarina Mazarzakos American Legion Post 1523 in NYC. Once I get my life back on track and done with school and everything, I hope to return back to at least the Alumni Corps.

  9. Happy Holidays to everyone who has ever served with and is currently serving in the military both at home and abroad as well as to their families who support them and stand behind them even though they may be apart at this time. What you are doing is more priceless than ANYTHING that can be wrapped up and stuffed under a tree. Semper Fi!

  10. I took a nasty dive with my bass drum in 2004 and have 3 busted cervical disks and a bulging lumbar disk. I was in so much shock from the impact I felt nothing and did a half of another run through until the staff called it a day when a baritone player went down and bent the bell of his horn something aweful. But I never missed a rehearsal, parade, show, exhibition in my entire time on the field despite the hell of strapping the drum on. No pain, no gain...

  11. Ever had one member that was just a cancer on your corps? You know the one person that came along, drove everyone nuts, brought morale down, ###### people off, and would not go away? How did you or your organization deal with it? I mean I know you have to learn to accept different personalities, different ways of thinking, and different lifestyles especially when you are in an All Age corps, but I am talking about individuals who actually began to affect the corps in a very negative way.Do you excise the tumor or do you try to shrink it until it goes away?

I was taught by old school drum corps members how the activity works and due to my time in the Marines, I would be very tough on my members as far as discipline is concerned and members like that would not hack it. The military aspect has drastically declined in the activity and it is truley sad. I would be really in tune with all sections of my corps to make sure all is going well and if I see "cancerous" members they will be dealt with accordingly. Unfortunately bands are a different matter because they are represented by a school and you can't really do what you need to without the PTA breathing down your neck. But in drum corps, it should not be allowed. Just my opinion....

  12. So, how do we (DCA Championship weekend) impact Rochester's economy?

Here's what I can think of:

    Hotel rooms

    Restaurants/Bars

    Beer stores

    Stadium rental

    Gas stations

    Airport

What else? Is there a number or figure that estimates how much we affect the local economy while we're in town?

    edit for poor grammar

bail outs from parking lot brawls and all night drinking adventures :lle:
