  1. Watching Pioneer's performance, I really enjoy their drumline this year especially there bassline. Nice sounding hornline for their size. A little windy on the field tonight so colorguards are going to have a tough battle. Pio performed well tonight, a step up from last night I feel. Next on The Colts!

  2. Thanks to both of you! We came last year as a mini-corps, and you better believe some cats made memories that will last for years. But our objective for several years has been to get to DCA as a field corps, and this year it happens. It was an "interesting" year, in the Chinese sense, but we are ready for Saturday. 84 hours, 34 minutes and counting.

This would be the first DCA Championships trip for High Country Brass also? Congrats to all those corps on their first time out!

  3. We start so late with DCA shows because there are none within reasonable distance until now. With two long distance trips in our budget going to the northeast or south is just not in the cards. We did two local DCI shows in July and got some good feedback. We also have had discussions with DCI to get more performances and exposure during the TX swing in future years.

As for bus versus fly, school starts in TX early Monday morning. So our teachers and students need to leave immediately after our 5:00 show Sunday night to get to obligations the next day. 15 hours on the road before class or work is less than ideal. See everyone in St Peter tonight.

And as I stand in MN this morning with amazing weather, I am looking forward to having energy during a run!

Welcome to Minnesota. Better yet, see everyone at Patricks afterwards!

  4. Best of luck to or Minnesota brothers and sisters. Have a safe trip good luck from all the Govies.

...and if you can get a few cases of yingling, that would be good to..

I got you covered John! I can't guarantee a full case though. :-) Anything for the Govies. See you back in Minnesota!

  5. As a performer, it's unfortunate to hear that people wouldn't come to prelims and finals just because they feel a corps is a sure lock to win again this year. A lot of the competing corps have stepped up their performance and groups have stepped up their show designs in the past few years. Not to mention all the work put into this years shows since last season. Also the time and energy away from our families and loved ones to do something that we love, performing in front of fans.

I always thought (and still do) drum corps was about entertainment of the marching arts at the highest of level. Competition is definitely an aspect of it and one that if used wisely, drives us to be better performers. With that being said the comradery among corps and its community is something not be missed.

Bucs have continuously set the bar high over the past 5 years but shouldn't be faulted because of their achievements nor should DCA. Who knows when you'll get to see a group from DCE such as Kidsgrove Scouts again (miss seeing the Yokahama Inspires). It would be great to see Alliance this year. Just seeing them on FN through a poor quality video feed is intriguing enough to see how they'll do. Renegades, So Cal Dream returning all other corps outside the northeast, plus the alumni corps including solo and ensemble performances.

I could see people wanting to see a new group at the top (hopefully without the other corps stepping down their performance). It takes more than one awesome performance. It takes a whole series of shows, possibly whole season(s) to earn your way to the next level.

Hope to see you all there! If we have to perform in front of a hurricane Ernesto type crowd without the hurricane that will be a sucky time in DCA history.

  6. Shawn, this is the second year that Chase has done this program. Last year, 4 corps (Colts, Phantom, Crown, & Cavies) received money from the program. This year we could see that number double (or more if we can push a couple more groups up the ladder).

Yup, I remember participating in that. I just never thought about it as a way for groups to get out of the red (those that are). I hope they continue this program and other corps who didn't participate this round use it as a tool to help them regroup and field corps again in the DCA circuit (if they wish). Or even newly forming groups to help them build their organization. I wish you all the best of luck!

  7. The G bugle and Bb horn, which is louder, should be a Mythbusters episode. I've always felt as a horn player that the mouthpiece has as much to do with it as the horn but to get back on topic that is cool to hear the Kilties still play on G's as do a number of DCA corps. Whatever works for your corps is the best option.

  8. For anyone comming to the Minnesota shows. The Govies will be hosting their annual "after glow" at Patrick's in St.Peter Mn. The show starts around 2:00pm and the party starts around 4:30pm. Come early, watch some great drum corps, and get some food/beer/fun at Patrick's

FYI----Patrick's has just installed 2 old video games for your entertainment. Joust and Mario Brothers are both up and runnin, and are a hoot. I also believe the drum corps channel will be up and running as well.

Look forward to seeing you all.

  9. it rains every year on Labor Day weekend?

I can think of 5 times DCA was affected by rain, and 3 where it rained but didnt cause massive issues

    1975

    1987

    1988

    1990...show delayed a bit

    1993

    1999

2002...a little rain at prelims and a little at finals

    2006

    that's 18% of DCA's history.

as for bids....do you have a big name stadium willing to bid for it earlier? also....will a DCA sized crowd look good in a major football stadium? I know what Winston Salem looked like. that wasnt pretty.

a bigger stadium will not draw a bigger crowd. look at Winston Salem

2006 Ernesto=6 years worth of rain. At least it felt that way!

  10. The sound quality from theater to theater varied quite a bit. Some people that I text messaged, I knew were at other theaters, said their sound was either great, good except the loud brass moments, or like us was totally lack luster. Our theater seemed like there was only souund coming from the left side and it was very mono-tone. People complained but the staff at the theater blamed it on the feed.

  11. I thought there was a show up in the "great white north" last night.

    MBI/Kilts, etc...

I've seen no talk of the show or scores or anything. Does anyone know what happened?

It was rescheduled for August 16th which coincides with the show in Racine on the 15th.

  12. Minnesota Brass performed there show and I believe Racine Scouts did also. Unfortunate for the world class corps to not get a performance in. The field turf seemed relatively dry but I'm sure that can change after a couple of corps go on. When I was driving back to Minnesota it didn't seem like the storm would pass till now. It sounded like it went to a standstill after that.

  13. Watching the Olymic Opening Ceremonies was amazing and I couldn't help but wonder if they had a drum corps how difficult they would be to compete against. Watching Thai Chi was amazing. The fluidity of their body movement and the visuals they could come up with would be amazing. My favorite moments were the running pass throughs and the giant oars!
