funny how this fits in elsewhere...
Madison hasn't held a consistent major DCI regional in the same manner that Allentown has. It IS, however, more suited for a DCI World Championship event than Allentown because of the stadium, but that's another topic. This is about the last major regional before finals. We're talking about a community in Allentown that has hosted a major DCI regional for the past THIRTY-THREE YEARS (minus the two in Philly due to renovation). No other current regional site comes close. So as long as finals is within reasonable distance to Allentown, they're going to get that regional.

It shouldnt always be. And theres no real reason that Allentown deserves it any more than the rest of the country. It has a lot of history and i enjoyed the place... but at the end of the day its still a high school stadium. It deserves a spot on the rotation, but does not deserve to get last show billing every year 'just because'
Well, as long as Finals are in Indy, Allentown makes the most sense because it's closer. Atlanta is closer to Indy than Allentown, but doesn't have the history behind it. So it's not just "because."

Yeah, but compare this to 86, when they also smoked everyone. I know they were a crowd favorite then and the musical intent was still at the forefront of the activity. I know times have changed and the visual really works for them, but it would be nice if the kids weren't treated like the Yankees by the rest of the activity.
There will always be an element of fans who will seek to attack BD because they're the best. Jealousy, resentment, all that stuff. It comes with the territory and I'm sure, like the Yankees, if you boo the Blue Devils, that just makes them smile. "They don't boo you if you suck."
They will always do what they feel is the best show for their corps, but it would be nice for us paying fans to hear such a great hornline play great music again. Too much to ask?I'm a paying fan and I LOVED their show this year. Many of my friends did too. It was one of my favorite shows of the season. So how's this.......stop presuming to speak for "the paying fans" in what you think everyone wants to see and hear. Is THAT too much to ask? We all like what we like, and just because you and even a lot of people might not care for BD's show this year, doesn't mean that everyone feels the same way.
-
I say I want the Blue Devils to do the kinds of shows they like to do. Many people will like them. Many people won't. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was......
-
My sentiments exactly.
I actually feel the same way about Jeff Sacktic's Cadets drill, so there ya go. And for the record, I enjoyed both Cadets and Cavaliers this year, and have no problems with them "doing what they do" with their own characteristic style.
-
And blame the instructors and staff for that.
Uhhhhh, not entirely.
-
I think a lot of people are talking out of their rear-ends in this thread.
Here's what happened to the Cavaliers this year: They were great. Other corps were better. It happens.
-
So you would rather the judges slot the corps. OK. Good. Thanks for chiming in on that.
-
It is amazing how people complain for just the sake of complaining.
Look in the mirror when you say that. Stop being oblivious.
-
Thank god they did away with this. I have no desire to listen to 12 hornlines play out of tune with each other with half of them making up parts and hanging releases on purpose, sounding like absolute crap after spending their entire summers on a quest for perfection. Good riddance!
-
Difference is, they were screwed in 1992. Simple as that.
Nope. Try again.
-
By all means, let him go. I can think of about a dozen or so corps who would fall all over themselves to sign him up. Be careful what you wish for.
-
Love it. Chairs and all. Easily my favorite BD show in several years.

This is a great year for drum corps. Try to enjoy it.
I'm right there with you...I haven't had this much fun watching drum corps in YEARS!! Great year!
-
From what I've read, no, they weren't. But are they ever? Seems to me quarterfinals attendance has always been abysmal.
This is true. QF was always the least attended in my memory, but when you factor in how many people watched in the theaters, it could very well be that the total number of people who watched the event (live or in theaters) was the largest QF or prelims audience ever. It wouldn't surprise me.

Exactly. Like I said before, I am a WW player as well, but joined Drum Corps to compete with a Brass instrument.
Now, in 2009 we have 5 people competing on Saxophone, 6 on Flute, 7 on Oboe/Clarinet/Bassoon, and,
what's this?!?!? 3 on Mellophone?!? (I played Mellophone in corps, never did I&E though)
I remember hearing Mellophone runs a pleanty from the great corps and amazing Mellophone performances in I&E.
What happened?
So you never even did I&E, and yet you want these instruments out of "YOUR" I&E?? Seriously, what do you care? You never even participated to begin with.

The better corps.
-
They used to market it as the "Summer Music Games." How I'd love to see a return to that...
They also used to market it as "The Sight of Music."
People hear with their eyes in this activity, and that's one of the things that makes it so amazing. I'm with the 50/50 thing.
-
What are they doing that you find innovative? (I haven't seen them so I don't know.)
I've seen them many times and they AREN'T doing anything all that innovative or groundbreaking. Ain't nuthin in that show that we haven't seen or heard them do before. Still a great show though. One of my favs of the year!
-
Please keep in mind this is from a marketing perspective ONLY. Both corps are definately in the hunt for those positions so this is not a far fetched thing.
Look at 2002, you had first time Top 12 corps Seattle Cascades and Spirit returning after years in finals. Were they better than Blue Knights, Madison, Crown, Crossmen that year. According to those who wear the green shirts they were. From a marketing prerspective you had growth in DCI from the Northern West Coast, to the South, etc.
I'm not interested in marketing dictating who wins a DCI title or who comes in 12th.
-
If neither of those corps deserve those placements, I can't see how that would be 'good for the activity.'
Sorry.
-
How did this get into a "back in the day when we marched so much better at everything"?
I just said what we were TAUGHT back then was... to leave it better then we found it. Apparently some are still doing that and some aren't.
And apparently, some corps "back then" were taught that, and some weren't. Even some championship corps who shall remain nameless. I know of one school district who refuses to house DCI corps in their schools to this day because of something that happened with that nameless corps........back in the early 80's!!
-
NO! They shouldn't have won last year either.
Woulda coulda shoulda.
DID. Get over it.
DCI- Can we reverse the shows prior to DCI each year

Cute reply and all, but if you're looking for more DCI Finals action on the west coast, you'll be waiting an awfully long time, with or without this ten year Indy commitment. Sorry.
