  1. This musical book is LEAGUES ahead of anything they've put out the last 4-5 years. Of course, I've expected nothing less from the moment I heard they got Chuck Naffier for their staff. Possibly DCI's most under-rated/under-appreciated arranger because he doesn't write for one of the "big boys."

Agreed, look at what what he did for Xmen earlier and the Colts of the '90s. Tons of moments to hum AFTER the show is done. I think it's part of his "thing", if you will, that he picks music that the people can have a strong attachment to.

I remember he wanted us to play Tank! and Bad Dog No Biscuits by Yokko Kanno. I'm still waiting to see a show based her music.

  2. The Crossmen are showing a lot of passion, and are doing quite well to date with the "Renewal" concept. The ending is definitely a nod to the early 90's shows in terms of harmonics and energy. It is a "performers" show for sure!

And. . . Good Guys always wear white hats. . . hope you all enjoy! We're off and running!!

    :music::tongue:

I thought the ending sounded familiar! Can't wait to see this live!

  3. You never know...it still could be used. They said possible. And the corps hasn't announced anything yet, so that could also only be part and not all, as well.

Let's hope not. I did not feel that My Immortal translated well on the field in 2009. Then again I think it had something to do with identity of the corps that was playing it.

I will say though that if someone was gonna do some pop song for a vampire-themed ballad, Florence + the Machine could work on a football field.

  4. I chose other. Currently I prefer to shell out the money to see quarters at the theater and semis live, since those performances are finalized. I know there are some early season shows in my area. I don't go to them since there are corps that don't even have a proper ending to their show (no cliffhangers). I'm not putting forth my time and money for an incomplete product. Incomplete doesn't mean dirty to me. I expect dirt in those early shows, so it's not an issue. I also know that changes will take place throughout the season and to be honest I like seeing on youtube how a show develops over the season.

  5. Peter and the Wolf.

Not as a whole theme, I don't think that would work but I'd like the main melody to be used in a show.

You know I was thinking along the same lines. I would like to see a jazzed up version of Peter and the Wolf with other jazz standards and do a show that pays homage to those Warner Bros. cartoons where Little Red Riding Hood is a sultry cabaret performer and she's being pursued by a zoot suit wearing wolf. Essentially it follows the same formula as The Carmen Project, a bunch of guys going after a girl they can't have.

  6. Haydn-Symphony 104 MVT 1

Vaughan Williams- Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis

Bach- Toccata and Fugue in D Minor

    Mendelsshon- Midsummer Night's Dream

Debussy- Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun

    Debussy- La Mer (yes again!)

    Debussy- Fetes from Nocturnes

    Debussy- Arabesque

    Berlioz- Symphonie Fantastique (yes again!)

  7. Mandarins 2010 are proud to present!

2010 Program: "To Dream of Far Away Lands"

    The Caravan

Meetings Along the Edge, Ravi Shankar/Philip Glass

To Dream of Far Away Lands

The Mountain of Fruit and Flowers, David Buckley

The Threat of Mongols / The Himalayas

    Samudra Manthan, Shivkumar Sharma

    Discovering India

    Quiet, Sheila Chandra

    Ever So Lonely, Monsoon

    Arrival in China

Ambush from Ten Sides, Chicago Symphony Orchestra / Yo-Yo Ma

Why have more corps played from Glass and Shankar's Passages album? I believe that Esperanza '06 is the only corps to play some of those pieces. I've always thought the album had high quality show material. I've always been a fan of the Mandarins' shows. Best of luck!

  8. What.............No love for the 04 Glassmen

I would vote for it but I think its cheap to vote for a show you were in. I will say that it's one of the most sophisticated shows for that placement. Not to mention it was an exciting race to the finish.

BTW I've always interpreted the reprises of Medea to symbolic of Martha Graham's voice in the performing arts.
