  1. Guard member here...questions on original equip/flags/work...

Since there was no drill, as original as we could some work just couldn't be redone

Wish- not orginal work...I would never have asked a horn player to lift me onto their shoulder :)! Work written by Jeff Wroblewski, Instructor 87-92

Praise Ye- If you have seen live/video they wore capes, Alumni performed a small dance feature written by one of the two very talented ladies from Brass Theater, Friday evening was their first drum corps performance! (yay Kelli C)

Roman Suite....Yes Pines flag was original with the additional of new as we were larger than the gaurd at the time, flag work was a combination of new and old...new written by a field member alum of that yr(yay Laura C). Coins work was new (Melissa J & Melissa S)

Early yrs...86 originalwith one tiny change, 87 ballad, new, 88 new and old, new replaced big PVC pole flags, old was the end but was actually the opening fanfare(yay Lori V & Laura E)

Dargason- Jig was original with 2 feet step changes

Amber Waves...Front dance ensemble..new written by the second of the Brass Theater ladies mentioned above(yay Susie H) , swing flags original work,

Medea... the first section was originally done with a black flag, the last flag section was the original design but handpainted new flags, work was as close to original as it could be, mainly an arm or hand change or changing something that was whippin fast 1 count move to a 2 count move :)....sticks yes original work, sabre work was new(yay Kelli C)

The pink star flag was not an original flag I believe but designed to mimmick the original uniform top and t-shirts

The huge cross flags are original

Whew...I think I got it covered! I was honored to have been apart of something from every year... Mickey to Medea!!!!!

  2. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. Happens all the time. The organization did not turn anyone away. Some chose not to participate after the inclusion of the non-alumns.

alums chose not to march because of the addition of the young stars? i wouldn't mind knowing some names because a true star alum is not that petty. Our first camp was Easter 2009 I believe the young stars did not join us until feb 2010. If what you say is fact then sadly I'm personally pleased they are not participating....and all alums taking the field tomorrow have welcomed them into our family! They are amazing young adults!! One young man proposed to his girlfriend after our final run through at LOS yesterday!

P.S I want to give a shout out to current marching members of the Blue Knights for what they will be helping us do to get on the field and set in 4 minutes!

  3. It sounded like to me that when I listened to the most recent Field Pass that DCI had some new recordings of the upcoming Star show, my question is:

Will Tom Blair record this event? (Hopefully in HD)

Will they try to place it on the Finals dvd?

Will there maybe be a professional recording made available on CD (non field show)?

Will Star have a booth at Finals?

you will find Star souvie item at the Crown booth!

  4. Yeah. I don't get it, but hey, that is the route that they chose. And at the cost of losing some actual Star alumni from the program.

Either way, I'm, sure 98% of the people in the stands on Friday will thoroughly enjoy it, as well they should.

ok....no star alum was turned away....our young stars were asked when we knew our own was not able to commit! so many of my closest friends were not able to participate and are missed but it is great to feel the vibe of these fine young stars!

  5. One corps I know of does push their members a little to far...upwards of 6 full runs a day with only gush-n-go for breaks. IMO when you do this many run throughs where's the time to clean segment by segment in their show...I assume if they push that much that the members will "just get it", in the end they won't especially if the member thinks they have it when they don't.

I had a yr where very little water or bathroom breaks were given, and yes we were a very tired corps BUT there is something that comes with putting on the uniform and the energy that comes from it, but that energy can only last so long...

  6. Since we've heard so much about why (in great detail) the Blue Devils "deserve" to lose, and/or why some other corps will righteously take the title away from them (remember 08! and so on), I'll just go ahead and bluntly say why I think that NONE of these groups deserves the title over BD this year.

Cadets are too CHEESY. Have been for years, save perhaps for last year (overbearing pit notwithstanding). But basically they used to be much more deep and thus deserving imho.

Bluecoats, well, now that I think of it I'll have to give them a pass. They're cool. If they win, I'm okay with it (I don't think they will).

Cavies are bland and repetitive, you could impose one years' music on another years' drill and it would be pretty much the same thing. In other words, consistently BORING imho.

Crown is a COPY-CAT with nothing new to offer, that's what happens when you hire staff from the past. In their case, staff from the past, hired from the past. So they're a shadow of a shadow. Something like Garfield, something like Star, nothing new or different imho.

So that's why I think Blue Devils (or, as it occurs to me just when I wrote this, Bluecoats lol) DESERVE the title as an original, innovative, and amazing corps.

Everything about this post is nothing BUT opinion! So why rip other opinions?!?! You called yourself "old" so act your age!! MY OPINION IS JUST MY OPINION....I DON"T LIKE THEIR SHOW AND I LIKE ALL THE OTHERS!! Is this yrs music jazz?? If it is haven't they always have played jazz music with the exception of 88(?)? When I think of putting something different on the field I also include musical selections! Another personal opinion for me is that I never have enjoyed jazz, but that's me.

  7. There are only 3 "feeder" corps that are attached to World corps....BDB, SCV cadets? and Colt Cadets...my history is fuzzy from when Open and World class' were born, I believe all other feeder corps were gone by then. I would think BDB and SCV cadets would have always made OC finals.

In my family we have excitement/bummed vibe going on, I have a niece marching Colts and a daughter with the Colt Cadets. I was on the phone with my daughter last night when they learned there score was the highest the corps ever received...82.2, they were going NUTS :)

I hope a miracle happens and Colts make finals!!

but, for me I'm thrilled to be sharing the same field same day with my niece and daughter! *sniff sniff*

  8. Does anyone know why BD isn't at Ben Davis high school? Not really important, but I thought it was cool that they got to practice on a field with a giant "BD" in the center during finals week.

Also, is anyone practicing on Star's old field?

I would doubt the 3 fields Star had will be used, I'm sure Scouts are staying at the school, but clearly the fields are not useful to them. One field has no height for staff, but the other 2 do, one has a 2 level viewing deck and the other has a 3 level viewing deck with lights. It will be a shame if they go unused :(

  9. You should replace "REAL(ish)" with "real(ISH)" to emphasize the fact that some of the members have never marched on the DCI field under the name of Star of Indiana. Has any other corps that has done a similar alumni performance also pulled from affiliated groups and other corps to fill their ranks? And in this case they even have people whose only connection is with the post-DCI professional (paid) performing groups. I thought the point would be that everyone in the alumni performance would be alumni of the corps (even if the quality or velocity of the performance had to suffer some for it)! Silly me!

Blast! has only been the paid group(for which they deserve every penny they earned)....by the way NUMEROUS members of Blast! have come from other corps!

From the guard standpoint...we have 40 ladies performing and 2 of those 40 come from Brass Theater(never stepped on the field)....great talent and great ladies and they know exactly what they are taking on by stepping on to the field with the corps...the good AND the bad...and yet they are still choosing to do this . Insane right?? Afterall who in their right mind would participate in something they didn't do that receives as much hate comments as Star does. Proof these Brass, Blast! and SU alums are just as insane as the corps alums :)

Stars drive for excellence didn't end with the corps....it was expected in Brass Theater(great stage show), Blast!(2 Tonys), and now Star United(4-peat champs). SO if these people CHOOSE to be apart of the original group experience...who has the right to say no.....YOU??

  10. Didn't they have quite a few Pride of Cincinnati and 27th Lancers people too?

someone else would have to confim having 27 members in 85 but we did have some 27 join in 87 and 88 after they folded following 86 finals. Yes to Pride in 85, Stars DM and drummers came from Bridgemen in 85! Majority of the corps were newbies to this activity.

  11. And the article states:

But it should be pointed out that there are people in the alumni corps that are not of the Blue Stars "little stars" variety, nor did they march the entities specified directly above. No love for the folks that are "only" Star United alumns? :worthy:

    oops, clearly an oversight.

Star United consists of alumni from Star of Indiana, Brass Theater, Blast!, Blue Devils, Blue Stars, Bluecoats, Black Knights, Bluegrass Brass, Brigadiers, Capital Regiment, Golden Valiants, Imperial Guard, The Kilties, Limited Edition, Madison Scouts, Music City Legend, Northmen, Pride of Cincinnati, The Commandant's Own Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Santa Clara Vanguard.

copied and pasted from the Star United site.

  12. And those in the midwest may wish to come to Indianapolis at the end of May for the Indianapolis 500 Parade, in which the alumni corps will once again be marching. (The first time was in 2004.)

And here's an idea if you would like to experience the corps for the entire parade: Come volunteer with me as a water bottle carrier/squirter for the corps. I did that in 2004, and being surrounded by that incredible sound for the entire parade route was absolute bliss.

    Michael,

Sorry to say but we are not marching the parade anymore. Technically with 7 days of full corps rehearsal left, preparing for semis is our top priority. Come see us...we'll still need water and you are the best! Rehearsals are open and all are welcome :)

  13. First and foremost DVD never "leaves" a corps....

Second...Are you all ready to hear a completely different sound out of the Scouts hornline?

DVD doesn't have to work with every corps to get the DVD sound......they just have to hire brass staff that has been taught by DVD, just as Crown and Blue Stars did.

I am looking forward to seeing what Scouts produce for 2010!!!!

Semis 2010 4 corps with that beautiful beautiful sound!!!! All 4 at different levels...... Scouts fighting back for finals, Blue Stars fighting to move higher up, Crown pushing for their 1st championship, and Star Alumni!!!!

####, I just got excited!!!!!!! Can we skip the winter months and go straight to June?!?!

Since I'm a guard chick.....pssst.....a hornline can only carry a corps so far.....:)
