  1. Random, I am up way too late on Christmas Eve post - I miss this. Loud, Brash and entertaining as @$#@.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDgErGRQ1t4

And yes I am necro'ing a thread to make my point. :silly:

Edit - Listen to the dude yell "Don't fu#$ with Canada" at like 40 seconds. LOL

And #### they had some hot guard "persons".

If you want to know what it was like in KC when they did this show, turn it up as loud as it will go. Everyone rants about how great the corps are now days. I whole heartily agree. But there were some #### good corps back in the day that didn't make finals. Exhibit A. Listen about 5:00 to the runs. And yep that is a packed house at Semis.

  2. While Int is on the field, observations.

Guardians - Impressive for a young group. Ran out of steam late but to be expected. Big corps. Will make a splash in Michigan city.

Pioneer - quality show and enjoyable. All ya can ask for.

Academy -my daughters (plural) current favorite show. I like the color palette with the theme.

Troop - nice sound. But who is responsible for that travesty of a uniform??

  3. Chickasha crowd not terribly enthused by Jesus H. Christ Superstar, it seemed.

I hate to say it but I agree with them. Scouts fan since the early 80's but I actually enjoyed The Academy's show more. Plus that opening hit by Academy is to die for. I was down low but there were big hits from Scouts where it seemed 70-80% Amps with hornline blended in but the Synth was dominant. Yeah I know designed for the Big Barn and closed roof, etc, etc.

Was a fun show tho. Well worth the small fee. Talked to a guard guy from PC he said made for a good stop on the way back NE from Mesa. If they are gonna be coming through anyway might as well have a show, give the kids a show day and make a little scratch for the corps.

  4. I will say that in a few brief discussions with a designer who has worked in DCI, BoA, and WGI, I was told that, in his opinion, DCI had the least interesting designs.

I don't doubt that. Degree of difficulty requires different things in different venues. And hard does not always = entertaining or interesting. The merits of that can be argued to death but..

BTW I don't have a problem with all the school discussion side tracking. I guess the Mods don't either since it is them mostly doing it. But hell it's November. And it's keeping things lively around here.

  5. Looking at ranking information online for the state of OK, the State dept of Ed gives BA HS a grade of B, which is a decent grade, IMO. Schooldigger.com ranks the overall district 144 out of 502.Niche ranks then 6th out of 100. OK overall is very poorly ranked on a National level, but IMO the best measure of a particular school is where it ranks within the state.

This is not the proper forum or time so I will make this brief. My mom, wife, aunt, daughter, sister-in-law, etc, etc, are or were all teachers in the state of OK so don't get me started.

Yeah we rank terrible within the region. And as a state (not individual districts so much because I actually think BA, Union, Norman, etc do well) we will for the foreseeable future. Nothing is going to change. It's hard to argue the merits of education to uneducated people. Why waste all that money on someone who only works 9 months a year 6-7 hours a day?

Oklahoma approved almost a 1000 emergency certifications so far this year and we are not even to the semester break. (Like 982 I think.) We have folks with degrees in hotel service management teaching 2nd grade. And it is only going to get worse unless we build a big fence around the state to hold teachers in. Teachers are leaving in droves because the surrounding states pay much, much better. It is what it is. But yeah education is kind of a disaster here.

That being said I have always been impressed with some of our top HS music programs here and the quality they put out. Go check out 6A OBA, 4A-5A OBA on Youtube or somewhere. From BA to Edmond to Moore. Good shows. Heck even Berryhill and some others in 1A-3A small class OBA. Lots of DCI staff and ex DCI marchers spread out among those programs helping to make some good shows.

    Mike

  6. Looks like there is still a little Black Gold influence. Wes is still listed as "Program Design" and "Color Guard".

If you have not been around there, you have to realize the tradition in that area. BA is the big dog but Union, Owasso, Jenks heck even 3A(BOA Class A) Berryhill that went to Indy are all great, great programs and do BOA with the best of them. These are all within a 40-50 mile area of each other in Tulsa. Big, BIG suburban schools with big bands, money to burn and the urge to win. And some quality DCI staff working their "other gig".

Black Gold, though short lived, was part of the tradition of the area.

  7. I found BD to be exceptionally entertaining this year. Judging by comments here on the forums so did a LOT of other people.

The entire DCI field this year was phenomenal.

I hate to say this but this was a this winning BD show I DID enjoy. I can not say the same for some of the others. Liked it alot.
