  1. Don't quote me on this. A friend of mine living in the Milwaukee area recently sent me an email regarding the 2011 Pioneers. Apparently they will be marching a very small corps this season. Something like a total of 50 members. Also,

I know they announced that they are playing original music this summer, however, this same friend of mine said they are also playing "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral." Whatever the case may be, I wish their members a satisfying and rewarding summer competition season!

  2. So, it's been a while since we have heard anything. I guess that this would be the same from any corps when inquiring minds want to know.

    - Have there been any other new hire announcements lately?

    - Does anyone know how camps have been going?

    - Any other news coming out of camp yet?

A recent email from a friend of mine, who also is a member of the Pio staff, indicated they had a total of 51 members at last months camp. For the members sake I hope they have a sucessful season in 2011. The kids deserve it.

  3. We will Tom, just when the time is right. Funny how you pump your Corps in a PIONEER thread, seems to me we need to get your Corps some threads started of its own? Ya, think? Happy New Year to you, and better yet- GO PIONEER!

I could be wrong, however, I suspect recruiting will be very difficult for them this year. Agreed they had one of their best corps/programs in years. Prooblem was all that hype about how they were going to "surprise the world"

in 2010. That obviously didn't happen....again. I heard quite a few members were very demoralized by this and won't be returning this year. It's not that I wish them any ill will. I guess in five months time we will see what has actually developed over the winter. I hope they do have something to "Celebrate" about this season!

  4. Fixed. Vocals of any kind in drum corps makes me gag, I've never one time heard it done in any way that benefited the program.

Agreed. After all, this is still looked upon, in general terms anyway, as a "drum & bugle corps." I hope the Cadets don't drag out the living room props and over due it again. Please, if you must have vocals, keep the singing to the bare minimum!

  5. . . .not that you'd ever see them between NBC's horrible promotion of their shows and the no-one-cares Broadway shows they have to plug.

Right! It reminds me of the Hollywood Christmas Parade. Same format only the actors and singers are ppromoting their latest movie or record.

  6. . . .not that you'd ever see them between NBC's horrible promotion of their shows and the no-one-cares Broadway shows they have to plug.

I agree with bawker 100%. I stopped watching this so called "parade" a couple of years ago. Very few marching groups and way too many singers, dance troops and actors. All promoting their NBC specials or up coming shows, just like bawker said. When they start having actual marching bands and drum corps in their "parade" I will start watching again.

  7. What a god awful string of bad luck. I am certainly happy all Kilties and staff made it back to Wisconsin safe and sound.

I saw the Kilties this year on tape from an early season show. I was both impressed and surprised. A great corps and a great show. Why you didn't qualify for finals this year has got to be one of the greatest drum corps mysteries of the season. Hang in their guys, there is always next year!

  8. Well, according to G.H.'s blog, Cadets will still be in DCI in 2011. I'm not sure about all the others, but that's the first signal from a perceived G7 leader about the direction they're taking for now.

Great news! I hope and pray this does NOT include the hated woodwinds!!

  9. Good Show Pioneer. We were at the show and quite frankly, Pio got robbed with their score. The show was much better than a 71.1.

Don't know what they have to do to get those numbers up.

"Got robbed with their score." "The show was much better than a 71.1". Apparently NOT so in the judges eyes! This kind of childish complaining is a bad reflection on the Pioneer corps and organization. Did you ever consider that just perhaps they are getting the scores they deserve thus far? Remember, the season is only half over.

  10. From the ajudication slide:

    Performance

    Percussion –20

    Winds –20

    Guard –20

    Averaged == 30% of the total score

Old Hoppy already has plans for woojwinds! We need to add a category for keys and soon Guitars and Bass!

    G7 - written by a 7th grader?

Reads like a Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland movie - Hey, how are we gonna save DCI? I know! Let's put on a show!!!!

Disgusting! All in favor should be hung by their thumbs!

  11. I was never much of a Colt fan until last year. They had a talented corps and a well written, enjoyable show in '09.

Interesting to see if they can continue in the same vein this summer. Unfortunately, my one and only viewing of them again this season will be at the live theater showing of semis.

  12. I was at Pioneer's last block of rehearsal last night........This corps has brought this show to the table this year!! By far the best Pioneer show both drill and musically I think I have ever seen from this corps!!

They were doing full run-throughs and starting to clean already. 50+ horns and they can play(the last few spots are going to be filled Sunday they propably won't march in the first few shows until they work them in). The Guard can still use a few members (there are suppose to be more coming Sunday as well), although I have to say with the number they have they are very good. Drum line looks full and the drum solo is awesome. The drill has so many incredible features in it......best drill I have seen out of this corps in a long time.

Talking to the kids and overhearing them, they are really excited about this year and are really enjoying marching and playing this show (maybe them getting away from all the Irish is doing something)! I overheard one kid say "Our opener is so awesome I want to play it all day long!"

This is not a bunch of DCP ramble-on false hype, I am really impressed with this corps so far, they are leaps and bounds beyond where they have been in previous years at this time. There is so much energy and excitement coming from these kids that I haven't seen before! This is going to be a great show both visually and musically...........watch-out drum corps Pioneer is bringing it this year!!!!

    Quoting thirdcoast:

I don't think you will be dissapointed!

    GO PIONEER!!

Shouldn't all this pre-season hype go under the heading of a press release? I recall you making some similar observations last year around this time. Casual observer or staff member? Which is it?

  13. Amidst all of the discussion on other threads about woodwinds and the change in drum corps. I think it would serve us all well to voice our opinions to the directors of this activity. I don't intend this to be any kind of a revolution with blood in the streets, but rather a simple, tangible "vote" to those who make decisions.

The list of corps and emails is here.

Mine will go something like this:

    Dr. Mr. _____________

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I don't intend to consume much of your valuable time with a long explanation of my opinions. I simply wanted to let you know that I am opposed to woodwinds being any part of drum corps, whether it is pre-show, post-show or during-show.

If you choose to implement these instruments into your pre-show this year, I will no longer be able to support your corps by purchasing merchandise, etc. Please know that I will still cheer for the young people under your influence and I will still pat them on the back in the parking lot.

Let's try to avoid this slippery slope together.

    Sincerely,

    Granny Smith

Good for you, Granny. That is an excellent way of showing our disapproval over the addition of the dreaded woodwinds and the rest of the garbage they want to introduce into the activity. Mark my words, by the next rule congress, or whatever they call it these days, woodwinds and all the rest will be included on the field of competition! It's just a matter of time. When that day comes I will no longer attend any shows nor will I financially support and corps that utilize such instrumentqtion.

  14. Things have changed since you did Nightfire, Sam...

The recommendations gets submitted to the advisory committee first and vote on Yes or No

They all should know by Friday of next week... That's is all

Yes, things have changed. Now, in order to qualify, they must also get final dispensation from the Pope. No, not the one in

    Indiaanapolis, the one in Rome.
