Lets create a list of age outs that went on to do great things in music.
I heard most of the cast of Blast! are drumcorps vets.

I dunno....Spirit's baritone soloist was the real deal. She nailed it every time I saw them.Lindsey is 17 B)
Holy crap - that's amazing! She's awesome!

you know, i just have to wonder what its like to have finals less then 20 min from where you live. i would like that to happen to me, but i doubt it will. maybe if i move to Indy....
I aged out in 93, 20 minutes from my house.
In some ways it was kindof cool. We had a thing in Bluecoats where ageouts would rotate shows for who would call the block at retreat. If an ageout had a "home show", they would get to call the block for that particular show. When this was discussed at the beginning of the season, I said the only show that I wanted to do was my homeshow. Of course, nobody realized at the time that it would be finals! :P So I got to call block at finals which was really cool.
But after that, it sucked. You go from living/bonding with the same people 24/7 for 10 weeks straight (or more) and from the peak of the summer - DCI finals - retreat - aging out - fireworks - the whole deal - and then in 20 minutes you're at home back to your normal life. It was culture shock to the extreme. I was depressed for about 2 weeks.

What was Bluecoats site like in 1993?
It was in one of the worst parts of Jackson. We had to walk down a street littered
with dilapidated crack houses to get to our practice field. Other than going to
our practice field (which we did as a group) we really couldn't go anywhere
outside of our housing site.
I don't think we had any incidents though. The worst that happened is supposedly
a couple locals came into the gym trying to pawn some jewelry to some of the
members of the corps.
Apparently, other corps had it worse. As you pointed out, BAC had a tough time.
I've heard rumors that shots were fired near (at?) someones housing site.
That's what you get for arranging housing in the inner city.
The suburbs of Jackson are just as nice and safe as any other city suburbs (if not more so).
-
Can't remember the name of the school, but there's a good-looking venue called Robinson-Hale Stadium in nearby Clinton that looks like it could function well for a show and seats about 8500
That's my alma mater - Mississippi College. B)
In 93, Blue Knights stayed here.
Up until 2 months ago I lived in Clinton. I lived there for 20 years. Very nice place.
-
Check out the time-lapsed vid clip that DCI just put online.
That was cool. :P
What's funny is to watch the crowd up-and-downs.
-
i know the finals were held here in 1993, but do you think a show could come back? i know housing was a big issue, but with a show there would not be as many corps and plus new schools have been built.
Hey Patrick (fellow mello)!
There are enough very nice housing sights in the Jackson area to support even a large show.
The issue in 93 I think was poor planning and poor timing. Alot of housing had to moved at
the last minute because some schools had already started school and decided that they didn't
want a bunch of high school and college age half naked people running around the school.
It's unfortunate that so many had such a bad experience there. Most of the Jackson area is
very nice, but most of what people saw in 93 were the worst parts.
If planned properly, a show in Jackson is very do-able and could be a pleasant experience.

Cavaliers:
2000- 1st
2001- 1st
2002- 1st
2003- 2nd
2004- 1st
2005- 2nd
2006- 1st
This is the streak that should be feared the most. Cavies have a stranglehold on the top.
With the design team and staff they have, there's no sign of them giving up their perch
at the top any time soon.

1995-1997 CD issues were IBM's fault, near as I can tell.
It should be noted that they did underwrite quite a bit in those years and helped the activity through some leaner years...so that can't be overlooked.
However, I must again call for a re-issued, re-mixed version of 95, again, though. :P
Travesty to have that year rendered unlistenable for the most part.
Yeah - I would pay (again) for a remastered copy of 95.
I went so far as to try to enhance the recordings myself using some audio software, but couldn't really get it to sound any better.
-
Anyone that knows a guy named Jon "HB" Divita will know why it was a rough start that next morning. Here's a hint: post-show, backyard, standstill concert extravaganza for random drunks. Yeah for random houseparties near show stadiums on the 4th.
Good times... good times...
In 93, we were practicing on a field next to a neighborhood where there was a house no more than 30 feet from
the field. After about 20 minutes of practice, a woman comes out pleading with the staff to move us to another field
because her house was rattling so bad that pictures were falling off of the walls.
Needless to say, we all looked at each other with a "Oh, he77 yeah!" look. :P

I can only speak for myself, but I also think salaries are kind of a verboten topic.. not just here.. but anywhere -- in casual conversation, it's considered rude to discuss what one makes. The way I see it, unless you've applied for and been offered the job, it's really not something that should be any of your business. I know I wouldn't want anyone looking at what I make for what I do and passing some form of judgement based on that. Again, speaking for myself only.. I just don't think it's an appropriate topic for open discussion.
In general I agree. But for a non-profit, I think it's appropriate to disclose all financials including salaries.
I would want to know if a non-profit is using 80% of it's funds to "self-sustain" with 50% going to the chief.

And I wondered if Jolesch would take a panoramic photo of Camp Randall Stadium during finals retreat, from the back sidelines so you could see all the corps and the whole crowd. I would definately buy one. DCI should have Jolesch do that every year. Do they?
I don't know if they do it every year, but I've got a HUGE one they did of 93 retreat that was taken from the back stands.
It's friggin awesome. I wish I could scan it.
-
They're gonna sound like 1995.
What was the deal with that? I've always wondered why those recordings sucked @##.
I was so disappointed when I first listened to Cavies and the part where the corps
turns to peel your face off with Mars just sounds the same volume as backfield. Blehhhh!!!!
-
i always used to daydream about how sweet it would be in the middle of the night get the 2001 madison scouts hornline to play thier super loud opener in the middle of the night in someones room or house you didnt like
Hate me...... please! :)
-
The future looks bright for the direction of the activity
and all these guys are underpaid for the amount of time, energy and effort they put into our favorite activity.
I agree completely. It seems to me that they are a bit underpaid as others have pointed out.
Other than that, their salaries should not be a topic on this forum. Why?

Spirit....a solid job, and I felt they had an entertaining book with some good jazz phrasing.....good show...
Amazing Bari soloist!
Crown.....marvelous brass line/sound/arrangements.....great intonation, blend, balance, and solid dynamic rangeAgree 100%! Beautiful brass line. Best bari line in DCI in my opinion.
-
If anyone knows the stupid @##-clown who yelled "SUTAAAAAAA" at the top of his lungs
in the middle of the quietest park of PRs ballad, post his mailing address, phone number
and email so we can all spam him, phone harrass him, and then go to his house and
kick him in the ding-ding.
I swear, if I had been standing anywhere near him, I would have have been arrested shortly
thereafter for assault.
-
p.s. - I don't BOO anybody! I know how hard all those kids work out there,
and I don't care who their corps directors or show designers names might be!
They're ALL great! Congratulations on a great season, one and all!
At Bluecoats, we always thought it was pretty funny that it doesn't matter if we get "Blooo"ed or "Booo"ed
because we wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
If the entire crowd booed us as loud and as hard as they could, we would all have been all the more hyped! :)
-
I heard that Crown's hornline was so loud that the Faculty decided that in 2007 Crown would perform a 12th anniversary show entitled " STORMWORKS "
Come on Crown, you know it makes sense.
I would love to hear a corps as strong as Crown was this year play Stormworks. B)
-
For three corps, there were two "segments" of crowd reaction. When Crown was announced in 8th, there was clapping amongst a LOT of booing, and then about fifteen seconds later, they got a HUGE standing ovation and the crowd went nuts.
That moment is going to stick with me. It was a great moment. I don't believe the crowd booing was intended as a slight to BK, but just disappointment that Crown, who had a terrific show, terrific brass, terrific colorguard (but unfortuneately less than stellar percussion) were seemingly placed too low.
It cannot be emphasized what a huge positive reaction followed. To me, it seemed it was most enthusiastic positive
reaction of the night (except for perhaps PR). It definitely was the best I've ever heard for any 8th place corps.
-
I heard Crown's hornline was so loud that it distracted Chuck Norris during a roundhouse kick.
He was in China at the time.

My other example of classless behavior comes from an actual marching member of the Cavies. In 2002, immediately after the awards ceremony, a friend of mine and I went over to congratulate a Cavie standing nearby. His response was "Thanks. You know we only have a few age-outs so we're going to be even better next year!"
This does not strike me as a blatently "classless". He's not bragging about kicking every other corps' @##
and saying that next year nobody has a shot. He's just saying that they will probably be better (and has
a reasonable argument to support his opinion).
-
The vocalist, while she had a fine voice, was never able to phrase. Also, she always cracked at the climax of the piece. I don't know where or if that was judged but it just never "did it" for me.
I'm not a fan of vocals/amplification but I have to say that Cadets' vocals during the ballad is the most tasteful use of both that I've heard in a drumcorps show.
-
Having been to Allentown only, I was generally unimpressed with the overall design of many of the corps.
I want "wow" moments. I want Cadets as Kings going off to war, Xmen's Planet Earth and Metheny meanderings, Bluecoats' WWII heroics, L'Insolite's whirlagig drums. Gimme PR's Fire of Eternal Glory. Every year, I get consistent excellence. But entertainment seems to be the road not taken in many cases.
I was at finals and all of the people I taked to have said that overall - this has been one of the most entertaining seasons on record.
Apparently it comes down to personal taste. You used Cadets 93 show (Kings) as an example of great drumcorps "wow" moments. I personally find that show a bit boring. And I found that this year, unlike most recent years, almost every corps had several "wow" moments.

Huh. I went to high school with Keith Carlock. I didn't realize he was famous. In addition
to the above, I believe he has also played with Paula Abdul and Sting.
However I'm positive he never marched junior corps. We are the same age and from
the same high school and about 10 people I went to high school with marched. If Keith
had marched I would have known.
