  1. The degeneration of the fan network is a perfect reason to invest in good screen/video capture software to go with the "new" video delivery service.

The new video service is terrible with regards to skips and such, but last night's show was better than the previous one (for me, anyway).

The recordings from these software packages are pretty good. Some of them are free, though many of those type have time limits and other restrictions like watermarks on the video. I'm pretty happy with what I've recorded thus far.

I really miss the fan network, I didn't need to dig out the old DVDs/Blu-Rays/tapes (egad!) for a long time. Oh well, I collected them all over the years. Hopefully DCI will start selling them again so everyone has access in the future.

  2. I think what bothers some paying customers in the stands is that staff kids (recent age-outs, usually - on the "tech" end of staff) act as if nobody is watching the show but them. That can be annoying, but after almost 30 years of going to shows I haven't been around really egregious staff behavior very often.

I don't know if anyone on here attended DCI North at Buffalo in 93, but some drunken idiot was yelling at Star and their drum major during about half of their performance before they were removed.

At the time I just wished that the corps and the drum major would've smacked the guy around, that certainly would've been met with applause.

  3. I couldn't agree more. The musical scores (and not just BD's) this year are very enjoyable. I especially like some of the ballads being put forth, and "Children Will Listen" is probably my favorite.

I think that's the case with pretty much every show I've seen (granted, on video) this year. I have yet to listen to one "dud" this year so far.

  4. The ink on the pages has come to life; the characters emerge from the books and interact with the corps (often in chaotic ways). Like all good literature (from our childhood on) the interaction stirs the corps imagination and creativity, resulting in their writing (see guard writing on the field with giant pens during closer) yet more literature for future reader, thus the cycle of creativity continues. ????

At least that is my take on what I have seen. I have no idea if my impressions are what BD is hoping to get across to me, and with so many of the props (including what I believe will eventually be books and giant pens) unfinished, its still a lot of guesswork on my part, but it seems like a reasonable interpretation to me.

During the broadcast on Saturday night I was surprised that the "sticks" didn't look like quills or something to get the idea across. I'm sure that will be fixed quickly.

I think that the music alone is enjoyable enough with no theme though, much like last year.

  5. Some of the staff members I know do read DCP, and they're very well versed in weeding out the blathering (read: stomping your feet and whining) from the valid criticism. That's not that hard to do. Each staff has its own vision and this forum impacts that little, if at all IMO.

Compared to the RAMD days, this is a great forum for the exchange of opinions and ideas. That's why I think many directly associated with the activity (NOT active marching members) have fun with it, either anonymously or not.

  6. interesting to look back

I think a lot of us were surprised Crown didn't win the premier, especially after all the pre season hype and getting to see their terrific preview

So more of an "upset" last year than possible this year as none of these Indy corps won the Championship prior year. Akin to if BD were there tonight and someone upset them. Well, close - as BD is BD..

I agree, it's a "who knows" situation. Whatever corps wins tonight sets a precedent, but after that it's a long season.

  7. The recording quality of the pre-season show used to be much better. I wonder why they decided to do the recording live with an audience?

The music is a lot of fun. The Goodwin part is awesome, and some of the soprano octave work on the fast, articulated passages is incredible.

Who knows if this show will win anything, I don't really care. The K-pop section is a little hard on the ears right now, but we'll see where that goes.

I haven't heard a show this year I've disliked, this is going to be another great year :babies:

  8. For a small donation, that show was definitely worth it. I'm far from being a big fan of theirs, but it was a nice couple of hours and I donate/buy from many of the corps. The Cavies have a cool show this year, and their brass book has a heck of a lot more meat in it than recent years.

If something can be done about the voice in the run section, I'll be sold.

  9. Pulling for one's favorite corps to do well is a natural given. However, I could never see the sense (or lack of grace) in actually rooting against a group of kids just because one "dislikes" a corps.

Actually, over the years on DCP I think there's quite a bit of "rooting against" corps - and in the stands as well. This is sometimes related to the program that a particular corps is doing, but often it's just because of who they are. The DCI honor of being the bad guy is usually correlated with recent success or perceived advantages, of course.

I'd like to think that there's more people rooting for all/some corps than against, but much of the time it doesn't seem that way. As xandandl said, you can't teach class... and I'll add sportsmanship to that list as well.

  10. Best quote of the thread.

The highlight of my drum corps year is skevinp weaving all the show titles into a signature line...genius!

    I agree

Eh, there are digs at every corps about their show announcements every year. Who cares, we'll see the actual product soon enough.

  11. When I saw Star at DCI North in Buffalo in 93, the reaction to their show was stunned silence until the final minute or two. After the big hits at the end, people seemed to be on board and gave them a fantastic reaction.

I love the Scouts and their 88 championship show, but I listen to Star's 93 show far more often.

No credit to the drunken idiot during Star's encore performance in Buffalo that night :grrr:

  12. Fantastic that a corps is coming back!!! A rarity these days, unfortunately.

Please bring them back! I liked that corps. I have really great memories when they were my sister corps at MDBCA.

Hell, bring back Cap Sound as well.

While we're at it, Freelancers, Suncoast, VK, East Coast Jazz, & Skyriders... get on it. CHOP CHOP!!!

  13. I have no way to back this up, but I would think that not a ton of kids from NY march (compared to the population of the state), as it doesn't have a very competitive marching band scene. CA, FL, TX, and IL all do.

Upstate New York has had a VERY competitive HS marching band scene, at least in the 80s and 90s. These bands competed at MBA/BOA and did quite well (West Gennessee, Liverpool, Cicero-North Syracuse, etc. Some of those programs have changed, and others are still pretty good.
