  1. Doug was a good man and as good of a friend as anyone could wish. I'll miss him but I'm willing to bet he's already endeared himself to the Big Guy Upstairs.

I first met him when he was a little kid who rode his bicycle several miles to come watch the Colt .45s practice. He'd hang out on the equipment truck and help out any way he could. Back then, he'd often start a conversation with something like, "I love that part where you guys go, 'Dush da dush da...WOP!'" A year later he was marching. Though never a drummer, his knack for recalling and singing drum parts from corps spanning 4 decades never ebbed, and it was something I enjoyed immensely over the last 40 years.

    Rest in Peace my friend.

  2. Wes,

If you haven't already done so, read Sharon Nichols' and David Berliner's Collateral Damage: How High Stakes Testing Corrupts America's Schools. It was published two years ago and provides a framework for arguing against the current national trend of focusing so intently on raising test scores a few percentage points, at any cost.

One point I disagree with in your introduction is that it's not the AP and Honors kids who are getting excluded from the arts, athletics, and other courses and activities that are interest driven. These kids tend to have all kinds of choices. It's the kid who "Falls Far Below" or "Approaches" or earns whatever label a state chooses as "Unsatisfactory" who finds himself losing most or all elective choices by being forced to undergo some sort of remedial test preparation class or classes until he either passes the test or drops out.

I think you're on the right trail with your book. Best wishes for making it a success.

  3. The Colts candy corn uniforms = worst ever. Trust me, I wore one for two years.

Having endured the Colts' JC Penny's white jeans, white western shirt, and BLACK VINYL VEST uni of '73, '74 and '75, I can tell you that slipping into that snazzy orange jacket in '77 made me feel like a king. The "vinyl years" were hard on the self-esteem. I considered them then and until seeing the Jolly Jesters' uniforms 5 minutes ago, to be the worst uniforms ever. I feel better though after seeing the JJs.

  4. I heard a third-hand report that the Colts were working late hours this week putting in a new closer. Can anyone confirm this?

Greg wrote a new letter a couple of days ago and it is posted on the Colts' website. In it he mentions the corps was putting in a new closer.

They have given it their all this year and I for one am very proud of the members, the staff, and the organization. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, I love this corps!

  5. Considering making a food donation to a visiting drum corps and was wondering what would be a good thing to give? Red meat is out of my price range. Was thinking of fruit, veggies or something they don't get too often that I could prepare. Any ideas?

Also what about quanitiies? Any rule of thumb?

Fresh fruit, fresh fruit, and more fresh fruit! Also, powdered Gatorade is usually very appreciated.

  6. Scouts...what color would you use instead of the white tops?

    BK....

I only saw the Scouts at the Madison show but what surprised me was a couple guys had on wifebeaters (sorry...don't know another name for them), some had sleeveless t-s, some had Under Armor, some had on basic Fruit of the Looms like I wear under my dress shirts. I'm a pretty tolerant live and let live kind of guy but I was thinking MAYBE they should give a go at picking some sort of uniform white shirt to wear. I don't know if that's changed but if not, it might still be a good idea.

  7. Does anyone know if Academy changed their drill or visual program in any significant way this week? It just seems odd that they would have lost GE visual to the Troopers by 3 full points one night and then turned around the next perfomance and beat the Troopers in that caption. Can this simply be a case of one bad night or did something change?

I was told by a member today that they're done changing...at least for a while...and are working on cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.

  8. Why all of the love for the X-Men and the Scouts? Where's the Colts love?

They have been scoring a lot worse than that this week, much more than .1 behind the Scouts and .5 out of 12th.

GE and Visual scores are going fine, they just need to get some work done on those Music scores.

It's not a 2 horse race for the last spot, it's about a 4 horse race. And I believe with it being the Scouts, the Colts, and the X-Men and Spirit they could catch up to the Blue Stars and the Glassmen.

All I know is that it is going to be fun down to the wire.

    Go Colts!

PS I forgot about the Troop. They are still in this thing too!

Agreed. The bright side of the day for the Colts is they're back on an upward trajectory score-wise and as you pointed out, the gap between them and X-Men has narrowed. Reading what people wrote on this thread today about their show, I thought it could have turned out a lot worse for the Colts. It's going to go all the way to Friday 8-8-08 to know who's in that 12th spot....maybe 11 and 12.

  9. I have been a big fan of the Colts for years (remember Dave Lang??), but after seeing them earlier this year in Madison, and then watching them in Orlando, I turned to my friend and said "I do not believe they have gotten any better since Madison". I am not sure what is going on with them this year, but they do not seem to be making the big strides they did last season. Very disappointing for people who are fans.

Colts weren't in Madison this year.

  10. I'm not sure where "they're always ready" originated or that it matters but I know from personal observation that the parents and fans of the Legionnaires, who went on to become the Colt .45s and then the Colts, were shouting it out in 1968 at all of the Legionnaires' shows. They may have thrown it out there a time or two in 1967 as well.

  11. The only time I saw Crossmen this year was at Madison and I LOVED their show! I have a penchant for a variety of time signatures and Bones' show seemed to mix it up nicely. I was surprised that they were scored as low as they were then and I'm not surprised to see them making a move upward. What a great year for so many corps!

  12. "The whole thing comes off (to me) as a 20 year old trying to tell me (someone more than twice her age) what the secret to life is"

If one wishes to be inspired to contemplate the meaning of life, I recommend Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. The inanity of this narration can only interest metaphysical midgets (no offense intended to midgets, metaphysical or otherwise).

  13. Well, I suppose just like any other politcal thing Hopster does this is just trying "educate" us. Another attempt to push the activity forward. Very well done BTW. I give it to the man, he knows how to play the game. I dare say if the Cadets came out, bent over and did a performed uniform dump on the 50 yard line and tied it to global warming I dare say they would not only win DCI but would be lauded by the usual folks here. Note to Hoppy and the people pushing the whole show "I GET IT!". I simply am smart enough to "NOT LIKE IT."

    Mello Dude,

Thanks. You said what I wanted to say...but better.
