  1. Pioneer people who come upon this: To all of you I taught, taught with, and worked alongside to guide students and keep care of them, thank you. Thank you for what you learned -- and what you taught me. Thank you for the decent, hard-working youth you came with -- and the maturity and growth you achieved. Thank you for giving your all -- and for giving back, as members and staff -- immediately and over the long haul. Your worth is not in question. Hold your heads high. You did win!

Looking at MM comments, the kids pretty much have to buy one of their meals a day at some restaurant while on tour. I may be mistaken, but I read something to that effect on reddit. Holy hell, that adds up money wise! We had more food than we could eat at Regiment when I marched. If you bought something at McDonald’s, etc, it was just because you wanted to, not because there wasn’t going to be a meal provided.

    You are mistaken.

If true, the person was on a different tour than I from DeKalb through San Antonio.

I think it's relevant to this thread. There is alleged misconduct and gross negligence going on. Blocking access to proper medical services, lack of regularly provided food, threats/retaliation for any mm's/staff that speak out on conditions.

Spent last week with Pio and saw no evidence of any of this. Regular runs for medical treatment when needed, no food shortage, no threats to members, so ...

In regard to Yea! hiring the Chicago law firm of Franczek and Radelet, with Jennifer Smith leading the investigation:

Now, with the luck that Yea! has had so far in appointing various people and boards, we aren't going to find these names in the annals of Cadets' history, are we... like Jen's mom's cousin marched 3rd kazoo in 1956?

Can't speak to her drum corps experience, if any. Her web presence looks like the person for the job, though. http://www.franczek.com/attorneys-67.html

While I agree it would be terrific to scrap the new costumes and replace with old, there is the cost/timing factor to deal with that might not make it feasible for this season.  [Or maybe not until a week or so before Finals ...]

As for the music, I wouldn't wish it upon Drew Shanefield to scrap "it all" and start over, especially at this late date.  It's already going to be a big rewrite job to remove and replace Sound of Silence (as well as drill & design which has already been in place for a least the opener).     But the bulk of the show (not including occasional call-backs to SoS) can remain, especially the closer which is already a reboot of older Cadets' music.

The big question ... do the four singers stay on if they remove SoS entirely?

I would poll the members and staff first, then, if they can handle it, do the show. "Sound of Silence" might be just the thing needed -- for The Cadets, for others. Tough call because it could be cathartic and it could be horrible (I could see it be a literal show stopper.). And it could be just what we need. "But my words, like silent raindrops fell, And echoed in the wells of silence "

Yes, and because the details can be arcane, way too often they are misinterpreted and mis-"reported" to be turned into something they aren't.

Tim K here is a numbers whiz, too, and the CFO of SCV lurks around, IIRC.

Easy to do. Between the $5.5 mil library and the $1.5 mil organization, I've got enough detail of my own to worry over. I guarantee I can't speculate on someone else's number details.

You could be right. With an organization like RAINN involved with this now,  I have a feeling RAINN will try very hard to suggest things to be done and implemented across the board to improve the overall situation long term, and I know I'd be listening to them very seriously.

This could be a case where directors and boards decide that it would be easier for them to have an overarching policy that would save them from making up their own and having some separation in order to do the deed of sending someone away. That is: "You know we love you, BUT DCI has this rule, ya know, of zero tolerance, so bye." The nebulous "they" can be a wonderful thing [especially when it is a friend involved].

Thank you. I try very hard to be clear and also truthful myself. With this whole thread, it deserves and demands real clarity and truth right now, just my thoughts.

Agreed. The librarian in me said, "Somethings not right about this quote" after I read it out loud to my wife, so I went back to the original post for the clarity. Madisonsmiley might have been better off leaving it as NFL and saying "This is what should be." Live and learn.

DCI would need to change their mission statement and expand on its services and capabilities as an organization which would require its member corps to accept. I doubt the resources are available to revise its foot print let alone extend its authority.

Likely true. The options are going to get limited if they don't get in front of this. Right now, trailing the story badly.

Too harsh sounding, but the PI story is going to keep spreading.

  11. Friends,

I don't think we have gone as far as HockeyDad may feel, but he sounds a proper cautionary note. We (or some) may know things about the inner workings, but the general public mostly does not. To the future members, parents, and people who know of drum corps, but do not know drum corps -- what they likely know is GH is Cadets, Cadets is DCI, DCI is drum corps (especially now).

The past is the past. It is coming back to haunt us. Nothing we can do about that except support the victims and let the storm do what it will do.

What we -- as individuals, corps, DCI -- can do (and seems we are, at least starting to) is to ensure that the space for future predators is highly restricted.

As a university dean, we see ascending layers: the legal requirement, then, the public requirement, then, our standard above all. Drum corps' standard in everything else has always been to be the highest level. Time to step up our game.

    It's on us.

What a way to get nonfactual information, disgruntled old MMs alumni who hate for the sake of hate.hate, management as well as direction.  etc etc. as you said how about doing the work ( legitimate work and facts ) you say fishing for carp>? I say fishing for crap and there are plenty willing to toss their line in for whatever the reason. WOW!

I do get saying maybe there is an outlet if some who don't know where to turn with additional information BUT not make it sound like HEY, WANNA TELL YOUR STORY" here's your 15 min. of fame...and maybe it's just me, that's how it sounded.....jmo

Seems rather like what the BOD's Serious Investigation should have done. Just maybe try to find out the scope of the problem.

Casting someone down by the neck is completely different than all but hunching on the field. It's pushing someone down versus sex. Like I said, if they had a problem with that I'm sure they would've spoken up. These are 90% adults were talking about. It's not a bunch of high schoolers who go with the flow and have little to no understanding of what's acceptable. Then again, here we are discussing something when we don't know the full story. Maybe the two in Crown 2016 were dating? Maybe they were both gay and comfortable enough with their sexuality to do it. There's many possibilities one needs to consider before casting a stone, and the op of this Crown topic didn't.

This was not a high schooler. My point is that staff must be far more aware of what we demand and how we teach it. Does that routine need to be done that way? Do I have to touch the member to adjust that? Should we design that into the show? That self awareness needs to become standard -- and that means asking the members, among other things. They won't volunteer it normally, at any age. Few adults will in a workplace abuse situation, let alone young people who want to please us. It's on us.

Now you're just taking it too far. If the guard had an issue with the uniforms I'm sure they would have said something. If the performers had a problem with the sexual innuendo on the field, I'm sure they would have said something. So what if that's the song they sing to get hyped? Hell, when I was in band in high school we would sing Baby Got Back to get hyped. Whoopee. Also, did you notice that there are females in that circle too? Singing along? Shew. Stop trying to point fingers where they shouldn't be. This is about staff members taking advantage of their members. I'm sure an investigation will be done into all corps, but stop trying to make something out of nothing.

Maybe not too far. Would they (any of them) have said something? Mostly, no. Few of the students will bring it up, based on long experience. We, as staff, are the adults and we have to pay better attention.

This is something that staff must consider, even if we never did before. I started teaching marching in 1974 and even last summer, I still had to check myself. I staged a guard scene where a member (male) grabbed another (female) by the neck and cast her down. It was only after I was flying home that I really thought about the possible response to that. At the next opportunity, I checked with the grabbed one to be sure it wasn't going to be a problem for her. Even with that being okayed, did I need to stage it that way? This is now a part of my checklist for all of my actions. It has to be.

  15. 1973 Des Plaines Vanguard in the Racine, WI show. Finished almost 2 minutes before the gun went off.

Bass drummer got a bit excited off the line. Really cool judge comments when we came racing out of the fog backfield, though.

Yes, aware that was unlikely to be the OP question.

  16. Before the patents and old staff members start getting on here and bashing Revolution again, I would ask that this thread be closed. The current staff, including yours truly, had nothing else in mind but the safety of the kids and their experience from this year. They made it to finals, competed along the way, and are almost home. Nothing else to it. If you have questions about the organization please ask current staff, not anyone still holding on to the past. Thank you and agin please close thread.....

Last from me on this, then never Revo again: Stu had nothing to do with the Revo problem. Stuart had nothing to do with the Revo problem. New staff didn't have anything to do with Revo problem. It happened, though, and for many (staff and students) it remains an open sore. It is what it is.

  17. It was a Teal type incident, non-dues collection for a lot of the kids but they got to tour anyway, financial issues galore, bus non-payment issues, problems getting home from finals, problems, problems, problems, etc... but this was year 2011 with all old administration and old staff, so factor that in. I am curious, however, if any of the great parents who exhibited a true sense of responsibility, and not only paid in full for their own kids they also ended up bailing out the corps so the rest of the kids could get home, received any compensation from the new administration.

Can't speak for all but, for me: No, not even a thank you letter.

  18. Old management walked away without paying debts they owed; new management doesn't respond (even in the few cases where they even call back) with things they promised; last year's staff and those who helped the corps out of a bind are not even respected, let alone paid; where do we see a change?
