  1. I know what Box 5 means. And Jack-in-the-Box.

DCI judges grade on specific criteria for each caption. There are 5 levels for each criteria. The top grade you can receive is a 5 - hence, the terminology is box 5. A corps that meets the criteria consistently is graded in box 5. A corps that never meets the criteria is graded in Box 1. Boxes 2, 3, and 4 are in between these two extremes.

Obviously, the goal of caption head, at every corps, is to be in Box 5 in every criteria. If you do that, you can receive a perfect score - which, of course, BD did last night. Three judges gave them perfect scores, which means they consistently meet every criteria in those judges' respective captions. That is how it is possible to have a "perfect" show - even though the performers for BD are mortal men, not gods.

Jack-in-the-Box, by contrast, is a greasy fast-food chain from California. Their advertisements feature a ludicrous, plastic-headed character, pretending to be a corporate CEO. Their menu features a mix of unhealthy American fast food, and unhealthy Mexican fast food.

Yes, I know the difference. I also know the difference between a bass drum and a burger, a tenor and a taco, a soprano and a shake. Do I need to explain that as well?

    Any other questions?

No, no that's great stuff! But this should clear things up for you:

narrow-minded - lacking tolerance or flexibility or breadth of view; "a brilliant but narrow-minded judge"; "narrow opinions"

  2. I figure BDB and SCV cadets are not allowed to enter World Class for by-laws reasons (not sure) but who will ask to join Surf in World Class for 2010 and when will they know?

    IMO -

    Capital Regiment

    Teal Sound

Teal has shown they can tour as long as the big boys during the past three seasons and I know Cap Reg wants back in but when will DCI grant this. Its time to start to recruit for the fall and announcing your a World Class corps doesn't hurt!

  3. Quarterfinals should be open to all comers...or at least the top 3 from Open Finals

    Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets

    Blue Devils B

    Teal Sound

    Capital Regiment

    Citations

Top 3 advance to take on the big dogs...at the big stadium...and if they should nip a Cascades or Jersey Surf or Pioneer or Pacific Crest in the process, so be it.

Incentive for the Open corps? Huge. Compete for a Championship, compete for a coveted spot, then compete against the best....HUGE reward for an awesome season.

Incentive for the fans? they get to see 3 more good drum corps at Quarters... a little more value for that Thursday night ticket ($55).

Incentive for the World corps? Small. Whatever. They've done enough damage to the Open corps already. Let's reverse the arrogance and sanctimoniousness of the big cheeses when it comes to the small or more local groups.

Scheduling? Please. Open Prelims can be Monday. Open Finals can be Tuesday. Just like the old days. Or you could have Open Prelims the Saturday before...you know...so you can get a weekend size crowd...even if its in a different city...(just brainstorming here.)

If a female bowler can throw strikes, let her compete against the men. Its a ball, a lane and 10 pins...go! (this should have happened LOOONG ago).

If an amateur card player thinks he can bluff Johnny Chan holding 4-5 off suit, let em play in the WSOP. It's the same 52 cards, same buy in and a dealer...go!

If you have horns and drums and flags and a drill and everyone is under 22, go out and be scored against everybody else. If you made top 3 in Open Class, you earned it!

FANTASTIC!!!!!! BUT YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS THREAD!

  4. I would agree with that statement... if there was actually a difference between world class and open class judges. As far as I know, there are no designated judges for either division. If you look at Open Class Finals recaps from last year, you will notice a number of judges who you see quite a few times throughout the summer judging World Class corps.

I'm assuming your defense of the topic means you're a Revolution parent? If so, I don't think it's unreasonable for the original poster to question this. We do tend to see quite a few "odd" score bounces and swaps during the last few weeks of the season when it comes to Open Class corps. Memphis Sound and Revolution both jumped either just under, or just about ten points in the span of just a little over a week. That's the one thing I've always hated about scores when it comes to Open Class. It seems like the judges are forced to play catch-up towards the end of the season for giving out scores that were too low earlier in the season. These corps could very well be deserving of these scores, but the question I then ask is, were they equally deserving of such low scores a few weeks earlier in the season? Did some of these corps really improve 25 points in two weeks (has happened in the past)?

I also have just one more comment...

I saw Teal Sound in Beverly this year. It was a very early season show, and I still felt as if they were BETTER than a few of the World Class corps I saw there that night. Their command of their show, their brass line, their colorguard... awesome. I can honestly see them as a World Class corps in a year or two. To see them do so incredibly well that early in the season, it really baffles me to see other corps beating them by so much at shows now. Not only that, but other corps who they were beating by more than just a few points as of late. Has there been a lack of improvement? Are corps that were scoring in the 60s and low 70s really that close to them now? Are some of the corps beating them in Open Class REALLY that good this year? I can't speak for them as I haven't seen their shows, but if that last point is the case, then holy crap this will be an amazing summer for Open Class corps.

Edit: And no, I do not have any affiliation, nor have I ever had any affiliation with any Open Class corps.

The placement at this show is unacceptable! No disrespect to any of the other corps but Teal Sound is miles ahead of what packages and performances tonight and should have been at a solid point over SCVC. Someone needs to be accountable before the season ends, IMO!

  5. EXAMPLE:

Your Open Class corps is traveling down the road touring about 6 weeks night after night with lets say the current World Class 17th, 15th or even 21st place corps with one large difference. THEY ARE GETTING PAID TWICE AS MUCH IF NOT MORE PER NIGHT FOR THE SAME MILES TRAVELED, MEALS SERVED, TRUCKS TO FUEL, BUSES TO LEASE, STAFF TO PAY.....AND MUCH MORE OF THE SAME!

Now I ask you does this seem like a well thought our plan???

    IMO

  6. NO - Keep the Open Division but allow those that can be considered World Class to compete in World Class making more corps available to the World Class and changing finals week back to the old format and pay rate for each World group the following year plus other payout benefits that are currently applied.

Tweaking the mandated "YOU MUST TOUR AND BE AT THESE REGIONALS" and simply allowing all World Class corps to participate and travel based on what they can afford without going broke and folding is key! The only impact not doing full tours as a World CLass unit will have on each of those units is when they do meet up head to head. Corps that do a full tour will have that experience from the performance and judging community already. But I don't think most will care about that as long as they can provide a great affordable experience for the members that keeps that corps financially healthy and a good product they will be happy with whatever placement they earn. The show sponsor will be happy and fans will be happy.

The smaller corps and corps that are building organizations to be able to support larger tours understand this and would not be upset as long as DCI leaves a few slots as they do now for them to compete at all shows but not World Regionals. Again this will increase the World corps numbers to about 30 and reduce the Open number to about 14 to 16 however, this will give opportunity for new growth in Open Class with it being affordable and now much more competitive unit to unit making it exciting for each corps and its members.

  7. IMO - DCI should make the Open division a D-league for smaller drum corps and they should allow those drum corps currently in Open class that are 100 members or larger, that can afford to tour as they have been to become World Class.

This would bring the current World corps numbers to about 28 or 30 bringing back Top 21, Top 17 and Top 12. These "new" World class corps can tour as they have been much like Jersey Surf still does and make much more money to travel the same miles they have been traveling during the past few years in Open Class getting peanuts for pay!

  8. I wonder if the changes in Phantom guard staff from last year to this year is being questioned now that Crown guard is way ahead of Phantom at this point plus the best guard Crown has ever had -

    and

I wonder is the Cadets percussion is missing Tom at this point in the season.

Just curious.......it seems that if Phantom guard numbers came up to where Crown is they wouldn't be sitting out of top 5! Same for the Cadets percussion numbers.....down a good point of so from years past at this point keeping them over 2 total points from BD. Hard to catch up to this number, all other captions are consistant and within range.

    Your thoughts!

  9. Valdosta Show (Senior Only) Review

First Up: The Sun Devils - Very nice looking group on the field. Uniforms look great gives them a real drum corps look. The brass line looks very young for the most part. Percussion may be a bit older and the guard is small but energized.

The show concept is good but the brass book is too hard for the young members however once the hose comes out I think this will help the young brass players make it to the end. Low brass mostly. Sops are the strong point for now. Great sop solo, excellent job!

Percussion line is a nice size, lots of dirt when moving. Book is good and will get much cleaner as the season goes. Front ensemble needs to contribute more this will help the brass line. Color guard has great energy but is very small 6 I think. Being smaller, less is more, staging is everything.

Drill is good for this size corps, they keep everything in the pocket and by the end of the summer this will help all sections be stronger. Overall good job for 1st show. Now you have that under your belt start working on your performance, timing, sound and the results will come.

    C+

Next Up: Corps Vets: Smaller then expected but great look and sound. The show is a good old southern concept that works very well. Brass line - Some holes I think but overall good job. Soloists (Hunter) great job and the strength of the show. Some over playing at times and a few people sticking out of the ensemble but the brass line will be very good by DCA.

Percussion Line - Its not about the book but about how clean you play! They got it right. The book is not over the heads of the members and they do a great job performing the show. They look and sound very good, one of the best drumlines I think CV has ever had. Mature, nice. Clean the inner beats and feet and you will do fine.

Color Guard - WOW!!!!!! Very good group. They do a really nice job of covering the field and staging for them is excellent. Some cleaning to do but this guard is very good.

Drill - Fair job, nothing that stands out. Staging is good but feet are a mess. That will get better as go along. Good job overall, I think this has the potential to be the best placing year for CV - IMO - 9th Place at DCA

    B

??? - Not sure why they other DCA corps from GA was not at this show or Carolina Gold. From a travel standpoint this would have be very affordable and adding two more DCA corps would have made a big difference. Maybe next year this show could be a split show. 5 DCA and 5 DCI cotrps.

This would be a great lineup for 2010:

DCA - Corps Vets, Carolina Gold, Sun Devils, Alliance, Music City Legends

DCI - Cadets, Crown, Boston, Teal Sound and Spirit

  10. The best business plan in the world is only as good as the people that are executing it! Revolution has shown no such person during the past few years.

As a drum corps participant and business owner that supports not only this activity but many other non-profit organizations, it upsets me that this is still the norm with Revo yet they put good solid paying members at risk with being run so poorly and going on the road. I think after this years problems they will be looked at by the powers to be before being allowed to take students on the road all summer again.

I hope they manage to take care of old, new and future business and start putting this type of mess behind them.

  11. This is the first reply by a Rev insider. Thank you. However, no administration should forced to do anything that in the longrun hurts the group even if parents are requesting it. Rev has a poor track record with money to the point of it impacting the members on the road, staff members not being paid and vendors being ignored for outstanding bills that only creates a bigger buzz when posts like this are made.

As stated on various posts I don't think anyone is questioning the passion by the administration just the ability to operate a business (drum corps) as it should be. You never put your laundry on the street and if you do this is what you can expect. Take care of your business and it will take care of you and most importantly communication is the key to success!!! Speak to your parents, members, staff and vendors. Let them know what you plan is and keep it in house as long as you have communicated and made the effort to fix issues I don't think anyone would give you a real hard time but after many years of the same negitive stuff, people will not be on your side.

  12. I agree, Open Class should be reviewed. World Class could use another three or four solid open corps that can tour all summer without any major problems so move those that can and the rest should be allowed to do a minimal tour that they can afford OR let them all compete in one class (World) and let the numbers apply. Just like the old days when corps actually put up numbers like 31.25 and it was a thrill to break a 50.00!!!
