  1. Actually, Michael doesn't say that. He identifies a key reason why there is more parity in the NFL than in DCI, and in an implicit comparison, notes that this is not the case in DCI by asserting (probably correctly) that DCI will not institute a similar rule. The two have been compared!

In addition NFL players are adults who GET PAID so there is more willingness/acceptance to maybe play for a lower ranking team. DCI members are kids who GIVE PAYMENT to march at a corps of their choice.

  2. Well, don't hold back!

And, lest you get a reputation for being a simple Negative Nancy, you might consider supporting the prime directive of DCP by actually discussing a subject by adding something other than just thrown waffles.

    But thanks for playing!

    :sarcasm:

To make a comment like "a judging system rewards money" is just ignorant and uninformed on the reality of this activity.

Ok.....Blue Devils won last year because overall they marched and played better than everyone else that season. Carolina Crown won brass (edging out BD for the brass trophy) because in that caption they performed better. BD also had a better design, sure people didn't think it made any sense but if one understood the Dada movement than the show made perfect sense.........again you may not have liked it but it made a lot more sense than Aaron Copland and Super Heroes. Groups win because they are better and have better designers.

so if "throwing waffles" is a term for speaking with logic.......then yes I throw waffles. :bleah:

As far as being a Negative Nancy and the prime directive of DCP..........i guess its ok to falsely rip on an aspect of the judging system that doesn't exist......or blame Hopkins for everything (as so many do in here from time to time).......so thats all fair game.......funny how people in here rip on everything, but heaven forbid someone rip on a comment made in here. :wall:

I'm out of here for a while.....going to the store to get a box of waffles

  3. dang.......for an original topic that was just meant for fun, it only took 5 posts for some "bitter betty" to make some sort of "G7/Hopkins" type comment........that may be a record for someone trying to derail the original point of the post.

But sticking to the original post.

    VK = red velvet cake

Impulse = any candy bar you grab last minute while in line at the grocery store

  4. I think the internet has a lot to do with it. what I mean is that many people see the shows before they even arrive to the show site. Also, many corps put out "sneak previews" from camps/rehearsals. It is just the new social media culture we live in. I remember when I marched there were times we never knew what corps were going to be playing until we arrived at the show. Now repertoires, complete show descriptions etc.. are all giving out way in advance so some of the excitement is taken away.

  5. I am working on a project and was hoping to get peoples opinion.........which I'm sure won't be hard in here ;-)

What would you consider DCI's top 5 influential/iconic percussion moments or achievements of the 1980's

What would you consider DCI's top 5 influential/iconic corps moments or achievements of the 1980's

    Thanks

  6. This looks like Granada Hills charter high school marching band from Granada Hills, California. I know they have marched in the Portland Rose Parade in 2005 and 2007. and I also know that they have done a few other commercials, Nickalodeaon Kids Choice awards, and some other things like that. So I am not saying it is definately them...but it looks exactly like them.

Their band director was a Freelancer back in 80' and 81'.....I think he was one of the brass soloists in 81.

  7. Another Freelancer one.

For those who marched the corps in the 80's and 90's, the red cadet, white flap, and silver buckle all had special meaning for the corps that many members took very seriously.

Through those years that part of the uniform was changed/altered only twice, 1985 and 1994.......coincidentaly the following years of 86' and 95' Freelancers went inactive.

  8. Very true (IMO, though, if you're going to give props to BD's incredible pit accel run from 2000 you have to also give credit to Phantom's awesome pit accel run in 1995)

I think that at least since the early 90's Cavaliers have consistently had incredible pits that were able to throw down just as much as make beautiful, nuanced music.

Your right ......can't believe I forgot that one

  9. Here are a few that really stick out to me. these are all just my opinions (some are just mentioned for cool moments)

SCV 1985.....One of, if not the first true percussion ensemble sounds from a front ensemble. The drum solo in 1984 gets an honorable mention from me, but in 85 it just seemed like they capitalized on what they did in 84 through out the entire show.

Suncoast Sound 1985......Concert Tom feature in "Midnight In Miami".....took a lot of huevos to put that in their and it worked really well.....havent really heard anyone else try to use a single player on concert toms to help carry a moment....and it worked as a cool lead in into the bass drum feature..........just think, about 1 minute of show with just baritone soloist, concert tom solist, and bass line

BD 1988/1989......My favorite pit years of the BD Float era

    Star 1993

Cadets 1992......Really liked the use of the handbells in the ballad......and really nice run near the end of the show

    Madison 1995

    BD 1996

    Cadets 1999

    BD 2000.....accelerando keyboard run....enough said

    Cadets 2001 - 2003

Cadets 2005......Loved "Dancer In The Dark".......still my favorite ballad ever in DCI......also my favorite writing of Neil Larrivee's

    Phantom 2007

    BD 2011

So ya, obviously their is a lot of good stuff out there, but that is what just really pops in my head at the moment

  10. Wait a second. I fully agree that O probably has lots of others things in his mind, but...

    HE WAS READING IT!

He didn't have to think about it at all. What he needed was a staff who took the time to actually engage with George and show some interest in the facts. Somehow I doubt that Hop booked them for this gig by touting that they are an All-Star marching band.

And, imagine, of all those people in the room that one or two of them stumble across a band competition in their local town. They remember "Hey, I saw one of these at the UN and they were great!" They pile the kids in the car, buy tickets, and settle in for an expectation that is never fulfilled.

What has that done for drum corps? Do we want people who are impressed to seek out a marching band competition or a drum corps competition?

(((((Still, way to go George and crew. Great job in a highly visible event.)))))

From the video posted I think they said it was only about 12 members..........that is hardly enough to honestly give anyone a reality check of what a DCI corps is actually like.

That being said, I still think it had to be an amazing experience for those involved, something I wish I could have done when I was marching.......and I fully agree with your last sentence which I marked

  11. Interesting thought. Not sure how he'd be as a caption head.

As a show designer, he's phenomenal. He pretty much owns WGI when it comes to designing winning shows with Pulse and all of the Scholastic groups he designs for but I don't know how involved he is with the day to day teaching of those groups.

Being from the same area as Mapes, I'm pretty sure he is involved a lot with the day to day things with his groups. And if I'm not mistaked, I think has also been writing for Blue Devil B Corps for the past several seasons. It would be cool to see John back with a World Class group. He was caption head for Esperanza.

Another guess for Crown, if they stay within their organization could be Zach Schlicher........no real merit to me saying that...just something to put out there
