Yes I do, in fact '78 Vanguard is one of my favorites. And yes I do respect the traditions and history of what came before.
As do I......so again....as someone who is a recent marching member....what do you think of when someone who marched in the 60's or 70's says that you are not doing drum corps...and the activity is "dead"
-
I'd have to disagree to you saying that it's pulled as a rebuttal by the young crowd, because since I've been observing (2005 that I started, 2007 when I decided to open an account) the forum, both sides pull the card about even.
Can I ask you one question.......as a fairly recent marching member....do you enjoy listening to older recordings of drum corps? and also, can you respect what came before you in the activity?
-
This is a trend that I'm starting to see more and more on here, and it's driving me insane, therefore being the person I am, I feel compelled to bring it up-
Why is that we have to push this whole "You're a young kid, you don't know ####" and "You're too old to understand the new era" bull####?????
Last time I checked, we were unified by the same thing, the love for drum corps. Not about age, race, religion, blah blah blah. There is always something to #### and moan about, I understand that, however, every topic eventually dwindles down to Dinos vs. the young ones. Can't we just realize that the Dinos have tradition and values of the old corps, and that the new kids represent the new era, and leave it at that? Maybe we wouldn't have all this "Drum Corps is dead" BS if we were actually discussing the issues instead of complaining about how the young kids "just don't get it" and how the dinos "just don't understand the new stuff".
"New Kids"-
Tradition is a major part of drum corps, respect it.
"Dinos"-
Believe it or not, a lot of us are knowledgeable. Just because we weren't there in the 70's, doesn't mean we don't understand the history behind drum corps international.
End Rant
When I marched, we used to hype on the old recordings of our corps and other corps.....as I am sure many current corps members do.....and many of us would even pass time on bus rides learning old drum solos........as a current member back then we were able to respect what was in our past, and appreciate how the activity evolved.
As much as many in here won't want to hear it........the "dino" card only really gets pulled as a rebuttle by the younger crowd.....the truth of the matter is, the the older drum corps crowd is probably the biggest "culprit" in the ever draining debate of "drum corps is dead garbage"........
Just my opinion / two cents

The first time I saw a drumline was in the Opening Ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles......that following september I joined the drumline at my Junior High School.
First time I ever was introduced to and saw drum corps was from my junior high school percussion instructors....he played timpani for Freelancers in 85.
One of my percussion instructors my sophmore year in high school, who really talked me into auditioning for a corps, she just also happened to be in the pit for Freelancers in 85, then SCV 86,87,88.
I marched Freelancers 89 - 93 in the pit........kind of odd when I think about it now, but for some reason I never realized that the two earliest influencial people to me in lines of drum corps marched together in the same corps....but taught me a few years apart from each other.......neither one of them ever said I should audition for Freeleancers.....they just said I should audition........So I just find ot interesting that I ended up marching in the same corps that they did.......maybe it was a subconscious decision.
Lastly, again...something else I just realized......in 89 I found out that one of pit instructors in Freelancers helped teach the 84 Olympic drumline.
Weird how reflecting back on things when your older allows to see things "differently"......im starting to babble now.....but just thought I would share.

Really, though, this has been discussed quite a bit: drum corps is nothing more than pastiche, anyway . . .so the argument basically boils down to "who decided to steal from another art form first?"
Yup.....and not that the upside down drumming, basses balancing on their drums, and snares tossing their sticks to each other wasn't cool for the people who saw it for the first time, I can understand how some might not be that excited about it when they had possibly seen 3 wgi groups do these "tricks/gimmics" back in April. But DCI and WGI share one group of fans to a certain extant, but at the same time they each have seperate fans....if that makes sense.
What I like about Cavies doing this is that in one of their promotional videos about their show, Mike McIntosh says that they are barrowing things that others have done. I think that it shows a high amount of class when someone flat out gives props to other people and doesn't try to claim things for themselves.

Is it not the Visual Performance award? Just one part of the Visual category?
that would make sense then
-
[r/quote]
Cadets average over three nights: 29.2 / BD over three nights 29.35.................oops!
Since there is a seperate colorguard award....do the guard score get taken out for the averageing/adding for the visual caption award?.......if the guard numbers were taken out would it have made a difference?
-
Congrats Cadets
-
I'd rather be in CA!
Agree
Well at least maybe just once every 5 years...I could handle that
-
We might (and do!) snipe at each other about what happens on the field, but I think it's worth taking a minute to reflect on the fact that all of the organizations in DCI shuttled these kids around the country (many literally from coast to coast) safely.
This is no small effort, and relies heavily on folks who we won't see on the videos: admin staff, drivers, volunteers, cooks, host school personnel, parents, and more.
So, thanks to all of the corps for continuing to provide what has *got* to be the single most productive and valuable youth activity in the world. Congratulations on yet another excellent season!

Is there are more hated, distrusted judge in all of DCI than Pipitone?
Maybe Torchia or Czapinski. Maybe that should be the next poll.

I think I remember the reaction of the crowd in Phantom's defeat of BD in the Final, after BD took Prelims and Semis, the crowd went absolutely NUTS!
This time around, if BD somehow manages to defeat the Cadets, I think we would be looking at a riot... or at least the complete opposite reaction of that in 2008. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
For DCI's sake... even if BD is the better corps tomorrow night, they better award the Cadets the championship; otherwise, it may very well leave a very bad taste in the mouths of many fans, which may not be good for the organization.
I must say though, it would be interesting to see what the reaction should be, were BD to defeat Cadets tomorrow. No doubt that the Cadets are one of the crowd favs this year.
The drama is deliciously absurd!
What do you think?
Just to add: BD was ahead of Phantom in the 2008 Semis by .375; not too far from the .5 margin that Cadets have over BD this year.
My response is not directed to the original poster of this message as I don't know where you stand on your opinions towards Hopkins.....but I find that line very funny considering how brutal many people here in DCP have been against Hopkins in past years
Also, another ironic part of a BD vs. Cadets thing is that in the past BD has been criticized here in DCP for not playing any recognizable melodies......which they are doing this year.......Now look at Cadets, with the exception of Amazing Grace.....they don't have much "memorable song like" melodic content
Funny just how fickle many "fans" can be

All of those mentioned are great shows, but none of them stands, musically, anywhere near Florida Suite.

Thread about an open class corps in the world class forums...
Sure......cuz many of those open class corps will be competing in World class on Thursday.......not to be harsh...but I think there might possibly be a few World class corps that may have their last show on Thursday cuz of the open class corps

...at anytime did someone mention a conspiracy, judge bias, or anthing else when talking possible explanation of the scores?,,,,,,NO. Did anyone say that the Cadets didnt deserve the win......NO.
The OP asked for a possible explantion of what happened tonight, and I gave it. New endings can affect the entire performance of a show. From, how rehearsal time was allocated to the members state of mind while on the field. These factors all can attribute to overall performance. Was tonight the case? Who knows? Is it a possibility? Posters in other threads said the ending of the show felt flat, I stated this may cause the influx in score. We're talking .04 of a point. With the competition being this close judges are looking at everything when awarding this score.
Also, If anyone on DCP believes that who the judges are, show region, show changes, rehearsal time, dont have any type of factor in the scoring, you are sorely mistaken.
Easy there, the should have been a tip that my post wasn't meant to be taken seriously. Next time I'll leave a disclaimer

Or maybe Cadets just got a little better tonight. That could be it also.
I understand what you mean though. I expect positions will keep changing up until finals.
NO.....here on DCP everything is a conspiracy on the same level as the JFK assassination and the moon landing
-
Bluecoats and Pacific Crest use it as well.
The high school programs I work for (as well as many others) use it too.
-
I just saw the score from OK. What's the dealio?
BD and Cavies weren't at the same show.
But Cadets beat Cavies at the same show in OK.

I'm not clear on why synthesizers would make drum lines better. (As for amplifying the pit, I've understand those arguments and disagree with them, because they remove the challenge of creating a big sound unaided outdoors. I mean, a high jumper would clear a much taller bar using a trampoline, but would it really be an improvement?)
synthesizers don't make the line better.....but they do give designers another tool to utilize.....how they use that tool is up to them.....if you choose to use it then use it well. There is no rule saying you have to use synth....there is also no rule saying you need a snare line....but corps have them....and they hope that they are used well......a bad snare line hurts a group....and bad use of electronics hurts a group.
about the reasons for amplification.....there is a difference between a big harsh sound (no amplification) and a big warm sound (amplification)......to some it is a minor differnece unfortunately some people can't hear the diffeence.

So take a look at this video of the 1980 Olympic Hockey team... http://www.youtube.com/user/goldmedalstrategies?blend=7&ob=5#p/u/7/OvzTIbJaGWo ..argueably one of the most famous/inspirational moments in Olympic Sports history for the United States, during a time of the Cold War when our Hockey defeated the Soviet Union......The Gold Medal by that hockey team Inspired our entire country......Take a look at around 22 seconds of this film......Clearly it is in directed Violation of the United States Code concerning Respect for the Flag......but at the same time is one of the most poignant moments of those Olympic (or maybe any) Olympic games regarding the United States Olympic teams.
This video shows a worse Violation than anything a drum corps did this past weekend.......now I am not posting this to show any "disapproval" of Jim Craig or USA Hockey.....but to make a point in this debate.......Why was this instance with Jim Craig so Inspirational to so many people......and what a drum corps did so horrible?
