  1. I am not picking sides of either corps cuz I like both this year, I have former students in SCV and friends on BD's staff.... but I have seen several lot clips of both BD and SCV on that site "that shall not be mentioned". And in my opinion, from what I have seen BD has a much more complex battery book....so as they get cleaner much of that complexity will shine through and will then be able to get credit reflecting in their scores.

This is taking nothing away from Rennick or SCV....no matter how the season ends, SCV should feel proud because their improvement from last season has not gone unnoticed by the judges or the fans

  2. Agreed, which is part of why I'm going, so I can decide for myself.

I also agree that the kids are the future (do I hear a Whitney Huston song coming on?) but on that motivation, DCI needs to consider that there are hundreds of avenues that people can invest in that future by supporting local sports, boy scouts, girl guides, etc. and that means two things...

1 - they can't disenfranchise existing fans like me with frivolous rule changes

2 - the number of corps has shrunk drastically since the 1970s. They serve less and less of those kids as time goes by but charge some of the highest ticket prices to the supporters. Participation is expensive and getting worse all the time, from what I can see. As a contrbutor to the development of youth, DCI is not cost effective.

Even when I marched in 1989 there were talks of adding electronics......hard to say it is frivolous decision. Drum Corps have been (and still are) the bench mark of the marching activity in the lines of performance quality. But up until the recent rule changes many have believed that high school groups/independent wgi drumlines had passed what drum corps where doing from a design stand point musically. I guess the best way to explain it from a kids stand point would be like marching really complex difficult drill at high school, and then going to drum corps and marching symmetrical drill that never broke 136 bpm and had the drumline drill move up down the 50 yard line.......just an analogy.

As far as less corps nowadays......well how many of those corps don't exist anymore because they were run improperly......We can't forget that it is a youth activity and these corps need to be financially stable, have insurance etc.... I find it very hard to believe that every corps from the 70's had all their "business" taken care of for running a youth activity in order........it is in DCI's best interest, and the best interest of the kids, to make sure these corps are being run properly and legally......I really can't see how people could have a problem with that.

As far as prices getting higher for tickets and members fees......it is the reality of inflation.......everything has higher cost nowadays. Just look at the price of gas. Disneyland, NBA, and MBL all have higher ticket prices too from what they did 10, 20, 30 years ago....and their true fans can step back and look at reality. Does drum corps have some special magic around it that protects it from the reality of inflation?

  3. I just watched the Cadets performing at San Antonio via Fan Network. I must say this is a really great show EXCEPT ... why do they feel the need to assault our ears with that thunderous goo (aka electric bass)? It is very disturbing to me. Anyone else notice this problem? The imbalance is terrible. This has been a problem for them since electronics began but this year I really want to enjoy their show and it's tough. Oh well ... flame away.

have you not been on these forum pages before  complaints of "thunderous goo" are like the flavor of the month....but only its the season

  4. Wasn't I&E moved to early in the season so more kids could participate? I thought the theory was that corps didn't want to waste a day of finals week preparation sending multiple members to Individuals for the day. Move the competition up in the season when practice time wasn't as precious.

Maybe some corps should do more to encourage the members to do it

  5. I&E has lost popularity with a lot of performers from Midwestern corps, it's the truth. Considering the amount of corps in the activity that prohibit their members from participating, it's no wonder that ever since 2005, I&E participation has PRACTICALLY been limited to most of the West Coast groups, and a few others. I'm particularly glad to see that Madison has never been one of the groups weaning themselves off of it, and it was good to see some Bluecoats participate as well. Personally, I would like to see a rule proposed that every corps must produce at least a certain amount of participants for I&E (although it does sound a little tyrannical, I suppose).

I do and I don't understand why certain corps don't have their members participate......I known some say that it might take away from what the corps as a whole is trying to accomplish.....but in BD's case, they won percussion the night before the I&E event....so it doesn't seem that allowing members to participate in I&E hurt the percussion section......just an observation

  6. I don't think the I&E results favored the West Coast because of better talent considering that most of the Midwest and East coast powerhouses did not participate in the competition. The Cavies, Cadets, Crown, nor Phantom seem to have competed.

guess hey were scared.....just joking :silly:

I was merely posting results.....the West Coast thing was also meant as a joke to all those who believe in "West Coast Inflation" :bleah:

But here's to BD and SCV :bluedevil::devil:

  7. Congrats to members of BD and SCV for winning 7 of the 8 divisions for percussion:

    Snare: Keelan Tobia BD 97.0

    Keyboard: Stephen Hall SCV 95.5

    Multi-Perc: Amir Oosman BD 97.5

    Timpani: Aaron Spevak BD 98.5

Multi Tenor: Matt Penland SCV 95

    Cymbal Ensemble: SCV 95.5

    Percussion Ensemble: BD 93

Also Congrats to the Colts for winning the Bass Drum Ensemble 95.5

Sorry to some of you readers.....as a former drumline member.. I didn't really look at the other divisions

  8. The Viper is back?......... Great, now we will see even more high school cymbal lines do this next year...... It's a shame to see so many high school cymbal lines copy the "viper" but neglect copying what the SCV cymbal line does best....play with good technique.

  9. I won't be attending in a dome.

I will be watching in the theater and online.

IMO, things like this make people a little more comfortable with not attending. (the dome truely has nothing to do with it) I think through new forms of media and internet...like the "site we don't speak of".....have changed (or created) more opportunities that fans have.

I have seen most of the corps shows already just while sitting at home, and I learned a lot about these corps shows even before the season began. When I marched it was possilbe not to know anything about what a corps was doing until we got to see them live.....so a drum corps fans "back in the day" would more than likely have to go to a show to see it.

Now I am not saying I don't like the internet and fan network or the theater show.....I just think it has made things different......but I still believe watching a group live is still and always will be the best way

  10. I think sound balance is a pretty integral part of the drum corps aural presentation and how corps handle it is critical, and ought to show up in the scores (not saying that it does or doesn't, how would we know?). Thunderous Goo is the newest addition to the instrumentation, so it gets a lot of discussion.

If suddenly every corps started using a totally new brass instrument very prominently throughout their show in a way that radically changed the sound of the corps, wouldn't we discuss it a lot? Shouldn't we?

I agree with you......this was kind of what I was trying to say with my second post in this thread

  11. Well the use of low frequencies through a sub woofer is just a new tool that groups have the ability to use. some use it well and some don't......some corps have a good snare line and some don't.......some guards catch their equipment and some don't.......I have had experience being judged by several dci music/percussion judges that judge my high school groups and I can say from experience that they WILL call out a group if the sub woofer is too strong, and I would be willing to bet that the corps get called out too.......unless we have heard their judges tapes we can't say that they don't......as far thinking it isn't reflected in the scores.....I think the judges are educated enough to look past a problem and still give credit for what the corps are doing well.

  12. What's the point of semis if Everyone makes it in? Everyone should make quarter, some should make semis, and the elite should make finals. Isn't this the point of competition? What's next? Everyone makes finals?

Open Class corps are allowed to compete in Quarter finals....so I think it might be a safe bet to say that not every World Class corps has a free ride into semi's....depending on how many Open Class groups make the push

  13. I know how you feel. I have never understood why guys make such a big deal about it. Some of the comments on ebuTuoY and Snarescience.com about girl snares, especially the ones that marched center, are absolutely ridiculous. Gender should never be an issue. Only hands. The only time it was "unusual" for me was the tenor girl for '99 SCV.

I will say, however, I will be truly impressed when I see a girl on Bass 5. When I say Bass 5 I am not talking about a punk### 28" drum.

I think people only make such a big deal about it in drum corps because it isn't as common as it is in say High School or WGI marching percussion

  14. Yes there is a girl. Stephanie V.

She marched Bluecoats Snareline last year and I believe she has marched RCC INDOOR.

yes that is true.....she also did a season with Pulse Percussion on drumset.

In addition to Stephanie, Bluecoats have a girl in their snareline, and Phantom has two girls in their snare line....oh and Mandarins also has a girl in their snare line.......not sure about any other corps

  15. I find it interesting that you think that. I actually just finished watching them back-to-back, and I have to say Cadets have the cleaner guard. Not just because of the Cavaliers dropped member, but there was some other significant dirt in there. I think what the Cadets were able to do, with the reversible uniforms was something that's still to be matched to this day, but that's just my opinion on the subject. To each their own, I still think Cadets would take it.

    For me:

Visual GE: Cavaliers, as much as I'd rather see it be Cadets

Music GE: Cadets by a long shot

    Overall GE: Cadets

    Brass: Cavaliers

    Percussion: Cadets by a mile

    Color Guard: Cadets

Visual: Tie, no real way to decide between these two visual powerhouses

Music Ensemble: Cavaliers, the brass score could hold them up, even though Cadets had a phenomenal brass line.

though you can't forget to factor in the use of percussion both performance quality and writing into the music ensemble caption. Not that you didn't.....but I have seen many people in here that think music ensemble only focuses on brass.

  16. I would have to go with Cadets 05.

When trying to determine the "best" overall taking every caption can't be overlooked. I'm sorry but I can't give a vote for a best overall to a group that had a 4th or 5th place percussion section.

It's as simple as this.....would you rather eat a piece of chicken that is cooked properly (Cadets 05) or a piece of chicken that is cooked unproperly and raw in the middle (Cavies 02) ..... sorry Cavies your 02 percussion is a piece of raw chicken in this debate.

But I am also slightly biased because I had a former student in Cadets tenor line in 05

  17. It's nice to see that everyone is comparing in a nice way and not the usual they ripped them off posts I'm used to seeing on here over the years...

It's also funny thing for me, but the Cadets 89' show was a HUGE reason I decided to march drum corps in the first place. The very next year I marched Boston in 1990 as a rookie. I always wanted to march Cadets, but because I had such a wonderful time in Boston...I decided to stay and age out with the Crusaders in 91' instead.

I know, strange isn't it
