  1. If the success and interest seen at the Skyliners' Open House this weekend is any indication, the 2014 DCA Season is going to be exciting for this legendary drum corps!! More than 100 performers (almost 110!) actively participated – playing brass, battery, cymbals and pit percussion with more than 20 color guard performers practicing. If you LOVE TO PERFORM AND ENTERTAIN and want to be part of a high velocity, intensity-packed brass and percussion-driven marching program, the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is the place for you! The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps’ next rehearsal will take place: Date/Time: November 30th, 2013 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 P.M. Location: Wyoming Valley West High School 150 Wadham Street, Plymouth, PA 18651 Directions: http://www.mapquest.com/places/wyoming-valley-west-hs-plymouth-pa-2216650/ Keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org or the new Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc. 2. The Centurions are pleased to announce their 2014 Program: The Journey Join the Centurions as they leave their home in search of exotic new lands. The journey begins as they set off through the streets of the Great Roman Empire. Their departure is announced by the triumphant strains of the third movement of Respighi's Fountains of Rome, which is heralded in by proud trumpet fanfares from the far reaches of the field. Our regiment continues their march east, only barely avoiding being drawn into a fierce battle between Serbia and the Ottoman Empire. Tchaikovsky's March Slav is heard as the Centurions play witness to both the savage battle and glorious victory of the Serbian people. Though the sun may not shine equally on this battlefield, the melodic alto voice of the corps' mellophone section and its beautiful counter in the baritone section carry forth the story of this heroic struggle. Letting go of past differences, the corps is fed a hot meal by the King of the Great Persian Empire. It is here that they meet Scheherazade, a Queen whose beauty is only surpassed by her wit. The company finds it difficult to continue their journey, not wanting to depart these magical lands until Scheherazade's stories have ended. It is in “The Young Prince & The Young Princess” that the corps finds inspiration, interweaving the gentle harmonies of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade together to form the perfect ballad for their second season on the field. At long last, the Centurions have found a place worthy of their journey. Arriving in the city of Gath, the crew's curiosity if immediately piqued by the Temple of Dagon... or more specifically by the exotic music flowing from it. The “Bacchanale” from Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Samson & Delilah brings the corps' journey to a fast-paced conclusion, complete with percussion features, dizzying guard work, and even a few surprises. Join the Centurions as they roam through the eastern hemisphere in pursuit of greatness! Get more info on our show, meet staff and members, and find out how to be part of "The Journey" in 2014 by joining us at our OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, November 30th from 1-5pm in Feeding Hills, MA! 3. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 24, 2013. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps’ Open House yesterday was an enormous success, and an exciting beginning for this legendary drum corps in our journey to hit the field in 2014. More than 100 performers (almost 110!) actively participated – playing brass, battery, cymbals and pit percussion with more than 20 color guard performers practicing. In addition to the Skyliners staff, we also welcomed about 25 parents and a number of Skyliner Alumni who came out to perform or show support. Rob Stein, Brass Designer, and Scott Carey led the brass instruction, supported by Mark Murphy, Ryan Lamoreux, and Ed O’Connor. After warm-ups, the horn line worked through the first 1-1/2 minutes of the show – “Feeling Good” - which included hints of melody from “Blue Skies.” This arrangement gives the listener everything you want to hear from this horn line - featured brass players, lush chords, and well-placed dynamics that build into the rush that one would expect from this song. The enthusiasm and talent level of the battery, under the direction of Percussion Caption Head Eric Boylan, and Brendan Carter, will be a driving force for 2014. The battery ensembled the Opener with the horn line in the auditorium under the direction of Drum Majors Adam Burdett and Steph Carbonell. Ashley Eden, Front Ensemble Technician, worked with the 14 - 15 pit percussionists on keyboards and technique. To give everyone a taste of the talent level and potential of this group, the Front Ensemble performed for the other members and attendees at the end of the day. The Skyliners are thrilled to welcome cymbal players to the corps as well. The color guard members in attendance, led by Michele Fadden, Color Guard Instructor, stretched, danced, and learned a flag routine to go with the corps’ opener, “Feeling Good”. At the end of the day, the color guard performed their routine for the rest of the attendees. Their movement and work definitely helped convey the sentiment and mood of this song. View our Open House video at: http://youtu.be/HMspTSw-oBg All in all, it was a great Skyliner Open House and first step towards taking the field in 2014. We thank everyone who attended today, everyone who helped set up and clean up for the Open House, or helped in so many ways to make it such a success. To those who were not able to attend due to school/family commitments, please mark the Skyliners’ next rehearsal on your schedule: Date/Time: November 30, 2013 ~ 10:00 – 6:00 P.M. Location: Wyoming Valley West High School 150 Wadham Street, Plymouth, PA 18651 Directions: http://www.mapquest.com/places/wyoming-valley-west-hs-plymouth-pa-2216650/ Keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org, or the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc. 9. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 13, 2013. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is returning to the field of competition with a show entitled, “A New Dawn, a New Day.” Renowned for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, this year’s song selections will not disappoint our fans or members. The Skyliners have selected songs that contributed significantly to the history of jazz: “Feeling Good”, “Blue Skies”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, “Round Midnight”, and “Caravan”. “Feeling Good” is probably best known for Nina Simone’s 1965 rendition. Simone was widely associated with jazz, and she earned the title, ‘High Priestess of Soul’. This Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse song was written for the 1964 musical ‘The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd’ and has also been covered by great performers such as Michael Bublé. The Skyliners have chosen Bublé’s swing version of this song to open their 2014 show. Expect to hear strong percussion, featured brass players, the rush that one would expect from this song. Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” was written in 1926 as part of the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. “Blue Skies” was such an enormous success that history says that the opening night audience demanded 24 encores of this tune! It also it became one of the first songs to be featured in a talkie, when Al Jolson performed it in ‘The Jazz Singer’. Performers who recorded this Berlin song include a Who’s Who of the most famous singers in America. The Skyliners’ rendition will bring a contemporary feel to this jazz classic. “It Ain’t Necessarily So” was written by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and comes from their opera, “Porgy and Bess.” Notable performances of this song by the character Sportin' Life, include Cab Calloway on stage and Sammy Davis, Jr. in the 1959 film. While this is familiar ground – the Skyliners played Porgy and Bess before – the 2014 rendition will be bluesy and full of emotion and passion. “Round Midnight” is a 1944 jazz standard by pianist Thelonious Monk. Monk wrote this song when he was 18 years old, but did not record it until many years later. In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie added his famous introduction and cadenza for his big band arrangement, which proved so popular that Monk added it (albeit an altered version) to his own performance, making it a standard part of the song. One critic called “Round Midnight” a “darkly beautiful” ballad with an “after-hours” feel that manages to sound fresh and original decade after decade. JazzStandards.com noted that “Round Midnight" is the most-recorded jazz standard composed by a jazz musician. “Caravan” is a well known jazz standard made popular by Duke Ellington in 1936, and composed by Juan Tizo, a trombonist with Ellington’s band. Due to its ability to conjure up mental pictures of distant and exotic places, “Caravan” became one of the Ellington’s orchestra’s first efforts to incorporate influences from other cultures into its music. Dramatic percussion effects, a winding and meandering melody, and Latin American rhythms make “Caravan” memorable on many different levels. We invite you to be a part of something exciting that is new and old, and help bring this celebrated drum corps back into the field of competition. No stock charts, more affordable dues than other corps, and an after school/work and weekend experience you will not forget! 11. As part of their 50th Anniversary Celebration Labor Day Weekend 2014 in Rochester, NY, Drum Corps Associates will be presenting a drum corps “museum” for all to enjoy. The 50th Anniversary Committee is actively searching for items to display. If you or anyone you know has any historic items that you would like to loan to the museum, please contact Committee Chairman and DCA Vice President, Allen Buell at vp@dcacorps.org. They are looking for anything and everything that represents the past 50 years of drum corps. Horns and drums, uniforms (especially of all aged corps), photos and other media, program books from DCA Championships or regular season shows and anything else you might be able to think of to honor the memory of the activity we love, please contact the committee. They are especially interested in uniforms from 1965 for the founding members and those who were in attendance at the first championship. Those corps are: Reading Buccaneers, New York Skyliners, CT Hurricanes, Baltimore Yankee Rebels, Albany, NY’s Interstatesmen, Pittsburgh Rockets and Upper Darby, PA’s Archer Epler Musketeers. All items can either be returned or donated to an appropriate historical committee to be preserved. Become a part of the Golden Anniversary of DCA. Contact the Committee now with any items you might have. For further information, go to www.dcacorps.org.
  12. Labor Day Weekend, 2014, will be very special to DCA. It will be the 50th DCA World Championship – Their golden anniversary. An occasion such as this is important to any organization and Gil Silva, DCA President, advises that they are pulling out all the stops to make this event truly memorable for all. He and the DCA Executive Board have formed an ad hoc committee to ensure that the history of DCA and – indeed – the history of drum corps will be properly remembered in the coming year. This committee held their initial meeting on Friday, August 30th in Annapolis, MD. For more info go to http://www.dcacorps.org
  13. I'm in my third year marching top bass at my high school's marching band, and because of my worsening scoliosis, I'm moving to the pit next year to play rack percussion. I'm hoping that this year off will benefit and strengthen my back so that I can come back after high school to march bass for Minnesota Brass and then hopefully DCI. But if this doesn't work out, I would definitely consider auditioning for rack/timpani/drum set for drum corps. Any advice from past or current rack/timpani/drum set players in the drum corps circuit? What are auditions like and how do they differ from the keyboard mallet auditions in the pit? Thanks so much! I was going to put this post in percussion, but I felt like it would be viewed more widely in this forum.
