  1. Colin McNutt and Ian Moyer will fill the shoes...period. If it isn't those two then why were they added to the already established staff in the first place. The Cadets are in good hands.
  2. hey, indoor brass has already been started. It's pretty freakin sweet too!!! yeah....
  3. This is true, and once again I must enthusiastically state drum corps was one of the best experiences in my life. However, there are several other musical youth activities one can only do for a limited time. For example, Interlochen Arts Camp. It is a wonderful summer arts camp that only takes campers through high school. Yes, you can march after this you age out from "high school camps," but the age limits conflict. There are several other highly worthwhile musical festivals and summer activities that are only available to people during the same age periods junior corps allow. Yes, I think one should think long and hard before giving up a junior corps experience, but you must fairly think of other opportunities you may not have a chance to take advantage of too. Drum Corps is great, and life changing, but it isn't the only activity that changes lives for high school and college students.
  4. I did march drum corps in 2005 and I think it was one of the best experiences of my life. To this day I think about Crown and my experiences every freakin day. I would not take it away for anything. With that said, the logistics and $ of monthly camps made drumcorps very difficult and eventually unfeasible in 2006 once I started going to college in Rochester NY when the closest corps is a 5+ hour drive. Oh yeah, and not having a car up there doesn't help at all either. However, I missed it bad last summer. really bad. So this year I thought about it again, but there is another reason. While it is absolutely a wonderful activity, there are other things I should be doing during the summer that are more productive to my career. It hurts to say that, but 12 hour rehearsal days does not equal 5 hours of personal practice daily with a weekly lesson from several of the top orchestral percussionists alive. At least not for me. Did I get better during DC?...yes, no doubt. Has it significantly influenced me as a musician today?...yes, no doubt. But I had my experience, and I need other experiences to further my personal growth as a classically trained orchestral musician. With that being said, next year is my age-out and I can guarantee I'm going to struggle with the decision to march again.
  5. I'm liking all the compliments for the 2005 show. It makes me feel warm inside. Anyway, I'm sure crown will impress and improve from last year. The faculty is finally staying for a lengthy time, the percussion section has some vets this year, and the brass and guard has been solid for the past two years thanks to the wonderful faculty. I really hate that I could not make crown work again for me this summer.
  6. FYI Crowns first scores have been in the 70's for the past two years (72 in 2004, and a 71 in 2005 if I'm not mistaken). So I think that prediction might be a little low.
  7. According to Bill Bachman, the heavy hitter pads that have been re-designed will be in most stores that sell vic firth sticks in about a month or so. Check out http://www.thedrumclubforum.com/phpBB/view...opic.php?t=4864 For the whole disscussion on the release of the heavy hitter pads. They are worth it
  8. As many know on this forum, I want to make the crown snareline. In fact, I want to make it more than anything in my life right now (yes, I am a little obsessed w/ it). While I have a private instructor, my ability level in marching percussion is above his (mainly b/c I keep up to date on things). I have also had clinics with Jeff Queen and I have learned a great deal from them. However, I am sure there are things I don't know about his technique, and I really need a guy from the Crown snareline to help me. I live in NC, so I know some of you Appalachian State snareliners are in crown and are in the state. So if you could please shoot me like a private message or something and we could hopefully work something out. If you don't live in NC, I would love to hear some tips from you guys if you have any you want to share. Any help you guys can give me to better my chances of making the Crown snareline in 04, It would appreciate more than you could believe. thanks! p.s. the crown show rocked this year.
  9. cadets or (get this) crown. I like both of their guards this year a lot. Cavies get honerable mention though
  10. Ok, so this won't be anything stellar, b/c this is my first review, and only my second live show, but I'll do my best. First off was trumpeter Jesse McGuire, Who was a very good trumpeter, and is a nice guy. He played a great "God Bless America" The first real corps to come on was Spirit. These guys were amazing! Music wise they gave me some chills. Visually very appealing (especially the cymbal line, man those guys are smoking something jumping over tenors like that.) Marching wise they were good, I saw a few interval problems, but it wasn't bad. They were a great first impression to give to this competition. My sister who I had to drag to this competition was hooked by the end of spirits show. Next were the madison scouts. I loved their entrance w/ the guard wearing armor and marching with those tilted drums. it was very cool- they win my award for best entrance of the night. Musically they were great! their marching wasn't too bad, but it wasn't as good as spirits. but their guard work was hurting. the ideas are there, its just they need to clean up the tosses and bring everything together. Being a percussionist, I loved their feature with the basses and the tenors especially. After that darned intermission where every single sweaty person seemed to rub off me and the stupid gate keeper wouldn't let me go to the crown souvenier shop b/c it was 5 feet away from the entrance and "I needed my ticket" <_< that was b.s. Then the blue coats came on. They were very good as well, and my mom kept uttering the phrase, "how are the guard moving? they just keep flowing" coming from a corps novice, that pretty much sums there guard work up. GE was excellent. Marching was great, and I liked there music. Then it was time for the cadets. I really like their music selection this year, and they have a lot of great guard work going on. their were lots of great percussion moments too and thats always good for people like me. I think their performance was best summed up by the fact that after each song, there was a standing ovation from the crowd. this was my sisters favorite group as well and she is also a novice in the drumcorps community (she knows how to pick them doesn't she) I felt for Crown after the cadets performance, but crown seemed up for the challenge. I thought there guard work was extremely creative in keeping w/ the shows theme. Their percussion was very clean and fit the music well. And the brass had a great sound, I think the only thing that killed them was their marching. They had some noticeable interval problems going on. but that is easily fixable. All in all, I thought each score was appropriate, but I hope that each of the corps can do some serious cleaning before finals and have all of them make finals (come on madison and crown). B/c I really did enjoy every show emmensly!
  11. hey everyone- just seeing if anyone has a nice marching snare or a marimba (w/ at least 4.3 octaves) and are willing to sell for a decent price :D
