  1. a couple of things...

one the college kids were a problem in the late 1960's when they moved it to Labor Day weekend... no different today... we worked it out then they work it out now...

and.... as for the season being too long

my complaint is it's too short...

Most corps can NOT properly polish there programs and develop them to the highest degree with only 5 shows...

Further, as a former corps director, I have a HUGE problem with that from a financial stand point... let's say your budget is $200,000 - which is about right for an all aged corps... like most DCA corps you do a few other things (parades and exhibitions) but in reality the only reason to exist is the summer competitions... if you do 5 shows... each show costs you $40,000 - you have to be kidding me... and the sponsors scream at paying from $1500 to $4000 to get you to their show... I thought it was bad when we had 13 shows a summer... bad in that it cost us too much money... so frankly... if I had a corps and only did 5 shows a year... I simply couldn't justify the expense... which is exactly why there will most likely be no corps in Western New York after next week.

What was seen as the salvation for some corps has spelled the end of others...

    There is NO easy solution

In 1968 4 out of the Top 5 and 5 out of the Top 10 Finalists were from New York State.

Last year? 1 in Open Class and 1 in Class A.

    Sad...

  2. It's interesting that (according to CorpsReps), Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 was never played in drum corps before this year ... when both Phantom Regiment and Buccaneers programmed it.

(Similarly, last year both Colts and Empire Statesmen debuted Eric Carmen's "All by Myself".)

Chris Maher and I strive to make CorpsReps as accurate as possible, but we can only enter Repertoire info we are given (or find online)...

    Updates are *more* than welcome!

You can either give me updates here, or email chris@corpsreps.com

    Thanks!

  3. Looking for scores and placements from the 1962 Dream Senior show ...

    :-)

    1 Hawthorne Caballeros 86.210

    2 New York Skyliners 85.943

    3 Archer-Epler Musketeers 85.036

    4 Hamilton Yankee Rebels 84.140

    5 Connecticut Hurricanes 83.300

    6 Reilly Raiders 82.400

    Juniors

    1 Blessed Sacrament 85.126

    2 Garfield Cadets 84.616

    3 St. Kevin's Emerald Knights 84.113

    4 Audubon Bon Bons 82.653

  4. SUN DEVILS - Inverness, Florida Competing in DCA

THUNDER - Tampa, Florida Competing in DCA

FLORIDA BRASS - Lakeland, Fl Alumni Show

IMPACT - Orlando, Fl Mini Corps Show

This must be a record of some kind

In '68, '69 and '71 half of the DCA Top 10 was from New York State

(Skyliners, Brigadiers, Sunrisers, Crusaders and Kingsmen)

Last year there was just Empire Statesmen...

  5. Has to be unique to your operating system... I'm on windows 7... it did limit the number of old threads listed... I had to go to the filters and select all... then they are there... BUT first time I didn't notice the box to check that says "remember filters" and the next time they were gone

I have now selected "all" again and checked the "remember filters" box and all seems well

I'm also on Windows 7; filters are set to "show all topics, and "remember" is checked.

I still only see about 3 threads...

  6. Thanks for the update Tyler, interesting reading comparing to BITD.

DCA went from being in 2 sanctioned contest to 1.

Dropped hosting a DCA sanctioned show.

Associate membership went from placing 11-14 to not a full member and meeting the stated article.

Back in the day, there wasn't any Class designation.

LOL, what the Hades.... 30 some years later....

Weren't any of the Cali shows last summer DCA sanctioned?

(I think they used to sanction 1 or 2 during the summer?)

  7. FYI, Tom, Sky did NOT have access to Roosevelt Stadium at that time or any other time. Like Andy said, Hoffman used "picks" from the cg and floaters for any formation set-ups. NO MARKS of ANY kind on the field. Hell, we rehearsed in a parking lot on Randall's Island; try to use any of the parking spot marks for a set-up!! Good luck!

As for Sky doing itself in that night, NOT ONE MEMBER OF THE CORPS OR INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF WAS IN ON ANYTHING THAT TRANSPIRED! Perhaps someone who was at one time affiliated with the corps thought he would "help" us, but we didn't need any help at all that season. He just took it upon himself and WE paid for it. And, YES, in '71 and '72 there were at least 5 corps who could have walked off with the title either of those nights. It was very close all year and the title was really up for grabs by the top 5. As for the results of the '72 championships, we will never forget that AND the person responsible for the ignominy heaped upon us that night in 1972. As for certain people from other corps and DCA officials who were concerned about "THEM" getting away with anything, "THEM" had absolutely NOTHING to do with it! It was one person only, as you have already related to me personally. I realize that some corps directors in 1972 were trying to fight for their corps, but the fight should not have been with us. We aren't keeping this subject going, but it always seems to be brought up somewhere. Rest assured Skyliners have a very long memory. Want to discuss Doc Shranker in DC (1966) or Vince Mott in Miami (1951)? And I'm pretty sure that Archer-Epler would really like to have a heavy and TRUTHFUL discussion of Miami in 1963.

Why is it that when an official screws up, it is the corps' that pay for that individuals ****-up?? Seems to me the soul searching has to start with them, not the corps.

    Ray

    I'm genuinely curious:

The only thing I can find about the '63 ALs is Archie was penalized 2 points for "lateness on the line" at Prelims.

(And dropped from 3rd to 4th at Finals)

Is there more to the story?

  8. Also control in number of bodies in the corps (35 or more) and that's to compete at any DCA show IIRC.

Again, only for Prelims, if I'm not mistaken.

A corps doesn't have to declare what Class it wants to compete in - *at Prelims* - until well after the season is under way.

Only then is there the 35-member limit for Class A.

During the season, there's nothing preventing a minicorps from field competition, for example.

Plus new corps have to prove they are financially solvent.

A corps doesn't have to prove it's financially solvent unless it wants to become a member of DCA.

Any corps can - and is encouraged to - show up at Prelims with minimal fuss.

That's why corps like Southern Knights, Inspires and Kidsgrove made the trip...

(They certainly didn't have to pass a "solvency test" before they were welcomed.)

Look, I'm not condoning anything concerning the main topic of this discussion.

I'm just saying DCA as an entity is not responsible for the actions of the corps - except at the Championships.

Even then, aside from requiring a corps proves it has Rights to the Music it plays (for recording purposes, mainly), and has at least 35 marching members - the only other "control" is Comport.

(Behave yourself at DCA Weekend: You're a Guest!)

DCA is just not the all-powerful organization some here seem to think...

    (Shrug)

  9. How 'recently' are you thinking Ron? When DCA changed the name? Because I joined Hurcs for the '91 season and there were high school students in the cirps then. Nowhere near the amount now, but the name 'Senior Corps' in the true sense wasn't applicable then. And as you can see, that was 20+ years ago. I know of other corps, Sky, Sun and probably others that can say the same

I know, I joined a "senior" corps in the fall of 1964 when I was 15. "Youngsters" were the exception rather than the rule back then.

My "recently" reference was in a Historical Sense - just like Historically any corps competing at the American Legion Nats had to have 100% Veterans in the ranks.

(Reilly was DQ'd at the '53 AL Nats - even though they won - because of non-Veterans. 1957 was "worse" when Reilly, Archie and Harvey Seeds were all DQ'd for not declaring non-veterans; other corps were DQ'd as far back as 1933.)

The point is that if a corps allows younger members, it's up to the corps (not DCA) to monitor things...
