  2. I was thinking about Carter-Finley the other day (I'm a State student).  But it took me back to a conversation I was having with some work friends, discussing whether we could host a big climate conference in Raleigh (I'm in meteorology).  And we couldn't think of anything to do in Raleigh (for example, we had a climate conference in Savannah in June...Savannah has the river, the river front, just darn pretty in general).  I know I made the same complaint about Charlotte above, but in Raleigh, even worse I think.

Yes Raleigh is a much worse vacation spot than Charlotte. Great place to go to college, great place to raise a family, but not a great place to take a week vacation if you want to do things other than watch drum corps.

  3. hey conner,

make sure your parents meet the staff and some of the other corps members. Usually, parents are more malleable when they know who you'll be spending your summer with.

also, make sure you are ready to march. For some kids, marching at 15 is great and many continue on for more years. As for myself, I found it difficult to be a fourteen-year old and march with 21-year olds. Didn't continue past one year mainly because I wasn't ready for my first summer on tour.

  4. The purpose of a tease is to get people to tune in.  Who said anything about

drum corps being about a single guest performer?  How many ESPN viewers,

who know nothing about drum corps, are going to tune in if the tease is "tune

in to see a unified group of individuals all striving to be their best together'?

Again, you have 15 seconds (not a couple of minutes like the quarterfinals intro)

to "tease" someone into checking out you broadcast...keeping in mind the tease is

    on ESPN.

Yes, I understand that the purpose of a tease is to entice the interests of a viewer. I was just stating that I feel showing 15 seconds of an individual would be a bit misleading. I personally would be ###### if I tuned in with the intent of seeing Carmen and only got a glimpse of her for a fraction of the two hour broadcast. Heck, I was ###### that Carmen was hyped on this forum and yet didn't appear in Madison's show for a good portion of it.

Just think that a tease can be intriguing without promises that cannot be delivered.

  5. hmmm... I think the purpose of a tease is to give enough information without giving away the whole package. For some reason, I just don't see how any of these options give any indication of what the coverage will entitle. After all, since when was drum corps only about a single "guest" performer. I thought it was about a unified group of individuals all striving to be their best together.

I think that the clip that they show at the beginning of the live broadcast of quarterfinals would be the most effective.

  6. I think the first job of the producer is to evaluate what the overall purpose of the broadcast is going to be. obviously, we really can't say what is or is not best for the DCI production since none of us (at least from what I can tell) have no way of knowing what the overall objective is.

With that said, I personally think that the behind the scenes footage is a more comercial way of taking the production, especially if the purpose of this move is to gain wider apeal and/or bigger sponsers. After all, millions of people enjoy watching shows that follow the daily lives of average joes like you and me thrown into a new environment to ultimately compete for some prize. America likes to see real people strugling, crying, sweating, yelling, etc... Personally, I think that the behind the scenes are where drum corps memories are made and we should be proud for the nation to see that we are a worthy sport and art. Sorry, but the average Joe just wouldn't be able to see that from a Z-pull or an Iceburg.

Nevertheless, as a drum corps junkie I'd prefer to see full finals coverage from Spirit to Cadets... from beginning to end... from the national anthem to the retreat (did they have one this year?).

  7. Was the corp starting during the announcer sequence normal?  I'm assuming yes since the DM didn't salute and started the show before the 'On the field ...' sequence was finished, and presume that it was part of the show concept.

Yes, their on field warmup is more like an unscored introduction to the show. Not the first time Cadets have done this though.
