  1. Impressive sound. What an improved from years passed. I agree with a statement made by someone else at another time that this year's BDB has a sound quality similar to that of BDA of the 1990, early 2000.... or close to it. Agree or not, the sound is impressive for the B corps.

What a great group of corps this year. The quality is light years ahead of past championships

Like the Plane at the end of BDB

  2. I call BS on tonights judging. How can the devils be scored that high on visual with those sloppy drills and poor marching?? Their guard is incredible but their drill is not demanding compared to the other top 4. I failed to see more than 2 phrases in their book where they marched more than 8 to 5. Anyone can march 180bpm 8 to 5.

BD = 8 TO 5???? what are you smoking

So, all the visual judges got it wrong? SURE

    GO BD

  3. I want to take you guys back a ways. I don't know if it was The Boston Crusaders, but my brain says it might have been. I think they were the first I heard with a xylo. But they played a really cool drum solo that featured sort of a Dave Brubeck kind of riff (could be wrong about the composer but it was way jazzy) It had this syncopated deal going on that was not hard to play between the snares and the toms and the xylo (I think it was something like a xylo at least!) Doesn't anybody remember that drum break/solo?

I also think that it was so darn cool that some other corps must have had to play it, too. That's what happened BITD.

Please let me off the hook here.

    Puppet

Or are all the martinis catching up?

BAC 1969, The Dave Brubeck piece was un-square dance in 7/8

Boston also played a jazz version of "Pop goes the weasel"

They had to learn two version of each solo with and without the bells. At the VFW they

would have been disqualified, at other shows they just took the penalty

  4. Mass Brass had 2 Hall of Fame brothers drop by Sunday to start teaching our staging for the DCA Mini Corps Championships!

Neal Smith with a help fom his brother Tony started teaching MB a staging show that is well within range of what MB wants to do to get to the next level.

From my viewpoint I was very impressed with how Neal was able to position us and add little nuances with very little effort, something that showed his experience and professionalism! With Tony on the sideline helping make adjustments MB was able to complete their first 2 numbers with the 3rd being finished Thursday.

There is still a LOT of work to be done , but beware, people at DCA will see a side of MB that has NEVER been seen before!

WOW, The legendary Smith Brothers, very impressive,

  5. Is it just me, or was the Blue Devils' stick figure man no longer moving his limbs in Allentown?

    Why the change, I wonder.

I did like it moving as well

1: The BD stickman animated or not it’s design that tells the program story in

a fun, yet very sophisticated way through equipment placement

    and then through form development.,

2: The Cavies Asia influenced motifs, again design that

    reflects the music

  6. I haven't talked to anyone with the corps about this yet, but it kind of looks like someone with their leg outstretched trying to balance themselves on a high wire, sort of like the members walking the yard lines as high wires during the show.

But I'd love to find out its origin, whatever it is.

I will see it in Allentown, it sure looks great on the Fan Network

  7. Thought I'd write a little review while settled in for the night's show here in humid Ohio. I was watching both the multi-cam and the high-cam, so I figured I'd comment on some things I observed. Just note that I wasn't there and I'm basing my comments on what crosses the screen and emits from the speakers of a 17 inch MacBook Pro, so take it for what it is!

Carolina Crown - Why are they performing last? I thought this show was boring. A show about finishing, you would think it'd be okay, but it was boring. Brass was good. Visual, not as good as Cavaliers. That's all I really have to say. It just bored me. Not a hater, just bored.

So that's that! Take it for what it's worth, an old marching girl's mildly bitter (oxymoron?) take from home. I'd rather be marching.

I agree, but was shocked to see crown beat the cavies in GE Visual

Cavies were 4th from both GE Visual judges?

  8. Phantom SWEPT the music captions last night, and deservedly so....I do agree that SCV probably won't come close....they have the content, but not the performance level.....Phantom and Crown, though, DO have the performance level....musically, they are already getting there, and once the visual totally locks, it will get very interesting...........

I also enjoy Phantom's musical program, the pacing seems to drag a bit, just prior to building the sword, btw,

what's with the round point on the sword? The GE visual is looking like 5th maybe 4TH but, clearly not in the league of

the Cadets, Cavies and BD! Last night I think, BD beat PR by 1.1 in GE visual and 1.0 in Color Guard.

I hear BD is still adding to their program as well. Will be interesting to watch or listen to, how far PR music

    can take them?

Crown, great sound, clean & crisp looking but could be 6th in GE visual, just count the number of blocks in Crown's opener?

Don't feel the depth, range and variety of the visual programs is top 5 yet. Could we have a corps take top music/brass and end-up

    in 5th?

  9. WOAH!! that is EXTREMELY UNFORTUNATE for Boston. What a BAD move on BAC's part if this was a "cleaning house" move.

"Bad move"? Not really, I’m sure the “House cleaning”

    started with all those easels.

With Jay Kennedy as program coordinator and Brian Murphy writing and

coordinating the visual program, 08 is looking and sounding like a new and exciting,

    programming approach for Boston.

  10. Not sure Key is a great addition. His music is all pretty formula and has a tendancy to all sound the same and most of that is pretty bland. I hope this works out for you. I am basing this on SCV and the 3000 bands that play his stuff.

Key did the Cab’s last year nothing bland or “pretty bland” about that show,

most thought it was the most exciting and Fan Friendly in DCA.

With Lee and Key, Sky will be…….anything but, bland!

  11. Best "small" corps I ever saw!

    Later,

    Mike

    Oh, YES

Pound for Pound, no small corps has matched BAC'S accomplishments. In 1983, with only 18 brass and less then 50 members, they made DCI DIV. 1. In 1979 they had 25ish in the brass Line and were amazing. In 1985 BAC only used the electronics at DCI Semi-Finals, took the penalty and it sounded great. Talk about Ba!!s, they didn't even drop one spot from Quarter- Finals to Semi - Finals, with a two penalty

  12. My top 5 Boston shows:

1967 - TOOK FIRST AT PRELIMS AT NATIONALS BUT CAME IN SECOND TO CAVIES AT FINALS

1977 - IN YOUR FACE, POWERFUL HORN LINE AND RAZOR SHARP GUARD

1979 - "25 AND STILL ALIVE" WAS THE MOTTO, REFERRING TO A 25 PIECE HORN LINE BLOWING AWAY MANY FULL SIZE LINES THAT YEAR

1983 - 51 MEMBERS IN THE ENTIRE CORPS THAT YEAR----AKA "BOSTON" ....ALUMNI TAUGHT AND FUNDED

1990 - FIRST FULL SIZE CORPS SINCE THE 70'S----IN 1OTH PLACE AT QUARTERS, 13TH AT SEMI'S

    2000 - RED!!!!

    GREAT PICKS

In 1967, Boston did beat the cavies two nights later after their lost at Fenway Park at the

CYO Nationals by almost four points and a week later at the North American Championship

as well as The Shriner International Championship.

Boston beat the cavies rather convincingly four out five times by almost four points each time

and would have won the A.L. Nationals if the cavies penalty was not dropped

  13. For once I am with the majority, voting for 2000....though 2004 comes close.

Another all-time favorite BAC show that I saw in person was 1969, the "year of the bells" (except at VFW Nat's :worthy: )..."Pop Goes the Weasel" and "Unsquare Dance" percussion features ruined at Nats by their having to "lose the bells".

Yes, " THE YEAR OF THE BELLS" 1969 WAS GREAT

Also, 1977 Boston took top visual GE at the A.L. National

by almost two points and tied for second in visual

demand & technique at the DCI Pre.

  14. So far today flew by pretty quick I hope the rest of the week does the same. Can't wait to play The opener and Malaga again. Especially since I know it better. :)

Hey if you are still looking for a place to march we have some spots open.

Heck if you just want to check it out and get a little Drum Corps fix stop down also.

Starting the drill next month AMAZING

I heard the Cabs are using 64 brass and a very large DL

and only have a few brass spots available? It’s sounding like a great

60th season Where are you having drill in March Outside?or inside
