  1. Has Mini corps evolved beyond its original purpose and is now its own entity.Should it be an all day friday, open to all, with paid attendence. The stewards of the activity have guided it well and the participants have grown it into its maturity. Is it now something bigger than it was intended?

To be correct their is 6 shriner corps in texas all under the 35 member minimum . We just finished our state competition and will have our national competition July 6 in san antonio.

  2. Jim's last name is Sarbeck and Mike was with Cabs Alumni last year. Don't know about this year. He was with Brigs for awhile in early 2000s. Yeah, that's quite a commute!

I don't recall meeting a POOPSIE. I would definitely remember that name!!! Mike & Jim stayed at our hotel and we had some amazing parties that are still unrivaled!

Mike is now playing with gulf coast Sound. Jim has graduated from bayou city to Arabia Shriners Drum corps. And yes they both still party a little bit !!

Both will be playing at "Brass on the Bayou " in houston.

    Look for the van ............

  3. IIRC Doug Orser was well into his 60's when he was still on the field with Grenadiers. Marching and playing soprano. Not a sideline stander at all!

Well i know of many of the shriners still marching in their 90's

what could be better 90 years old in 90 deg weather, with some 90 proof !

  4. update from texas shrine corps:

The Texas shrine Drumcorps Assoiation just completed their Texas Shrine Association anual convention and competition in San Antonio tx. This year we had 5 competitng corps from Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Amarillo. We had both a SS and MM comeptition as well as a parade.

Hella shriners reapeated as the state MM champion for the 20th time in a row . Khiva shriners from Amarillo won the SS competition.

All joined for a bally hoo at the radison in san antonio that would of made "Ray Stevens" proud - haha.

For all that follow the history of the k-90 thread. The original skyryder contras are still on the field being played by the Ben Hur Shrine out of austin.

And if anyone has any interest , I believe every shrine corps still has a few open spots.

  5. To quote monte python ... Were not dead.....

Texas shriners also has had a recent surge in membership (we are even for the year).. unfortunitly most are not horn players or percussionist and would rather ride the funny cars. It is true the average age is 70. But dont let that scare you some of these 70 year old guys are still getting after it...

There is still alot of drum corps around in the shrine. Texas has a state wide competition in june where corps from Austin, Amarillo, sanantonio, dallas , ft worth, and houston will compete in both standstill and MM competition. Texas corps have also performed at the following DCA Shows- Brass on the Bayou and Brass Hysteria.

Their is also a national competition every year that includes corps from across the nation and several Canadien corps as well.

  6. Has anyone tried this site? I'm curious whats on it.

The site has alot of tunes , the problem is they all have came from 1 or 2 people. For as many people that are on the list as members , not to many have jumped on board and shared anything!

  7. I must be getting old. I had originally put 5 seniors for Texas, but couldn't recall all of them so lowered it to the 4 I could recall. But there are 5 in Texas. Gulf Coast Sound, Frontier, World Gone Mad, Austin Stars, Scream Machine. And probably more as time marches on. Plus the Shriners from the Houston and Dallas regions. And Crossmen, Revolution, and the Texas Kingsmen.

There is actually 6 competing shriner corps in tx. Located in Houston, Dallas, Ft worth,San antonio, Austin, and amarillo. We have a state competition against each other in june. This year we had probably 700 people in attendance for a free show.

There is also some good shriner corps located in Orland o, Minnesota, Missouri , and Illionois.

I will also say that the GCS show was very well ran show and a good time was had by all...

  8. Well Stuie, nice review. I'm glad someone seems to have fun not taking drum corps too serious.

Not trying to take away any of Stu's thunder, but here what I saw.

    "AQUAFEST!!!!!"

The evening started by us (Govies) giving our new friends (Frontier) a ride in our new (used) bus "Shaky", all was well untill we noticed shaky has no lights, but who needs lights in the rain? Since we are not far away from the show site, we figure we will fix it later, which is what happend, thanks to the Tuna man and a pocket screwdriver. We arrived to the sounds of the Chops drum line playing on a hill, with my brother in front leading the charge. "WHA WHA SNARES!!!" I think Mike thought if they warmed up long enough the rain would get boared and go away. WRONG!, so the Govies offically blame Chops for the rain.

I'm sorry for blamming MBI for that whole rain thing :P

First on Chops, we were behind them so I did not catch to much, but the drums sounded good.

next up the Govies, and away we go. We had fun, got wet, and made a few people smile, good job. I dedicated our last song to MBI director Ann Jones who probly needed drink instead of a song but thats all I had at the time b**bs

next up Lake Shore----nice drums, good tunes.

Lights get fixed, no break lights "CARP!!!!!!!!"

Next up Frontier, I know they brought the rain with them. Nice horn line!!! new Unis, and they did well.

Now at this point of the show, we decied to send an early bus home, half Frontier half Govies. Bus is dead, parked on hill, low on fuel

Next up "THE KILTS!!" saw my friend J.C. and my arch enemy "The original" El Group-o :mmm:(soon my friend, soon) . The kilts seemed to be in good spirits and from the back, they looked good.

New plan for bus, roll bus to flat spot, Hope/pray it starts, CARP! no go, now bus is blocking street. One of the charter bus drivers comes over and lets us know what he thinks of the situation, needless to say he did not help by pointing out the obvious, and after a few more negitive comments he got tired of being negitive, and went a way. Thank God!!!-----------need new plan, push bus to curb. Bus is dead and out of the way.

MBI rounded out the night with a nice show, and sounded good as well.

Scores announced, and we start with a tie

FREE BEER< who can name the last tie at any DCA event.

"Abandon bus" was anounced for the second time this year, lets go home and worry about it later, and by god that worked!

Now we need to get 2 loads of people on Magic bus 2 (get your picture taken with it at DCA) everyone gets a seat except 7, close enough, lets head for the barn.

New record was set on the way home. not 1, not 2, but 3 chicks can't hold it, and we ain't stopping, so to the stair well,"we need a garbage bag", "again?" "Ya and 1 more after that" I'm not sure what the ladys name was from Frontier, but she is drum corps matieral in my book.

It rained all the way home, I swear we got hit by lightning, we need to fix some leaks, but we made it home safe, and then the party started.

Piolet finds me and wants to put in a DVD of Madison Alumni, can't find DVD, "Lets try it again later"

Lots of Kilts, Frontier, Govies, and Lake shore, everyone had fun, and the bar sprung it's own leak(s) to add to the fun of "AQUAFEST"!

Last call found me around J.C., we have fixed every problem any drum corps has ever had, life is good!

  9. and a special thank you to Teal Sound and Revolution for swinging by on their way to Pasadena.

Great job GCS Thanks for letting the Arabia shriners to be a part of it. And also thanks for the donation to the Shriners Hospitals.

As for my review, I agree all the corps played great. Masquarade With the bead toss to start their show was my son's favorite part. Good to see each corps improving over the summer.Best of luck to all as they continue on for the rest of the season.

  11. I would like to say thankyou to the GCS group for putting on a great show in houston during the Brass on the Bayou event July 29 .

The whole event flowed well and the after party was a blast - "Clicks" now knows the meaning of Heavy "metal" music !

Thanks for letting the Shriners be a part of it.

  15. A friend mine told me that when he was in high school in the 70's in Baytown, Tx. (outside Houston) they had an all-girl drum & bugle corps for students. I forget exactly which high school it was but it might have been Sterling. I'll find out for sure. Any of you Houston folks know about that?

That would of been Robert E Lee high school im baytown . They went by the name of the brigideers. They fell under the altheletic dept and not the music program. Eventually they were merged with the music dept and eventually folded.

The information on Arabia is out of date look for udates soon.
