  1. Hi Everyone -

I live in the area of the GSU Stadium for the Atlanta show and I think many of you that plan to attend will be very surprised with the area.  It is VERY different from what it once was when it was the Turner Field venue.  I'd argue that there are more restaurants to go to nearby than at the Mercedes Benz Stadium downtown; all of them are local, not chains.  Will the food and beverage offerings inside the GSU stadium match that of MBS, not at all.  But I think the Summerhill restaurant row will turn in to quite a special spot for drum corps fans to hang out pre- and post- show.  I actually hope they return here every year versus MBS.  See this link here for the Summerhill neighborhood showing what is open and what is to come soon:  https://summerhillatl.com/

The coffee shop has the best pastries you can imagine; the BBQ joint is fantastic; Hotdog Pete's is crazy good (waffle fries in a funnel cake batter), Hero donuts is tasty; the brewery is a great spot for pre show beer....I could go on!  Oh and the ice cream shop, Big Softie, will sure be a busy place.

All of the parking lots are slowly turning into apartments/condos particularly catering to GSU students so the area is very active late into the evening.  I promise you'll feel safe!

There is also another great local restaurant hub about 1/2 mile away in Grant Park called the Beacon: https://www.thebeaconatlanta.com/  So if Summerhill is too crowded can do a quick drive through the historic Grant Park neighborhood to these restaurants.

As for Atlanta now being an outdoor show in July - I can't wait to hear live drum corps outdoors again...no more echo. Yes it will be hot, yes it may rain, but I think these risks are worth it!

No disrespect to cymbal players and I love cymbal lines in WGI.  I just don’t see a purpose in DCI.

When you’re a visual designer trying to make sure your every detail is covered, having 5 individuals taking someone’s eye or focus in random parts of the field because of cymbal visuals just doesn’t make sense.  It would be the same as if 5 euphonium players waved around their instruments 40% of the show.

They make sense in WGI in a more intimidate setting although they don’t get much musical credit typically.

I have to disagree with you. Your idea that designers shouldn't focus on what 4-5 cymbal players do to create visuals should then just be applied to everything the rest of the battery does with the drum sticks.  Why not just let them play the music and not do all the other gestures they make with the drum sticks?  Cymbals create a lot of visual interest IMO. I'd rather see their action on the field versus more mallet players (I appreciate the front ensemble, don't get me wrong, I just think the size could be reduced so that a cymbal line on the field could be achieved).

I also initially asked what year corps stopped having a cymbal line.  Can anyone provide this insight?  Would be real curious to see when the last year was for Blue Devils, Bluecoats, Cavaliers, etc... had a cymbal line.

  3. I’m not one to typically follow the percussion section as close as others when watching performances but I’m always drawn to cymbal lines.  Curious which corps have one and those that don’t, what year was their last?

Was SCV the only Finalist corps in 2019 with one?

I wonder why corps choose not to have cymbal lines. To me, a slightly smaller front ensemble is worth having more active members as part of the drill on the field - more GE opportunities with how to interact the cymbal line in the drill and within the rest of the battery.

Regardless of the question(s) asked or who asks them, my opinion remains unchanged: live, sideline interviews add no value to the show.

I have to disagree. His interview with The Academy drum major and Phantom Regiment drum major bright tears to the eyes of many. His interview with the star Boston Crusaders color guard member was wonderful.  I think the interviews are fantastic - it really helps connect the audience with an individual member of this activity in the moment like no other.

  5. Concessions at LOS is quite shameful to be honest. Poorly managed, over priced, poor variety. Everything is what you’d expect at an old bowling alley - lukewarm, flavorless hamburger patties, stale nacho chips with bright yellow ‘cheese’ sauce, and chewy chicken tenders.

What they have done at MBS in Atlanta will hopefully catch on at other pro stadiums. They have really set a very high bar both in terms of food options, customer service and pricing.

For Finals week I recommend eating a hefty meal before you go in, whatever time that may be, and then hopefully only want to snack once there.

  6. I was in the same section as you, row 7. Agree on the Harrahs Club - disappointing the bar and food not open. Guess numbers from last year didn’t validate opening it.

Though I agree, overall the venue nailed it - great food, very reasonable prices, clean bathrooms, friendly staff, very easy to get out and little vehicle traffic.

I’ll be at Indy all three nights and can’t wait to see all the shows again!

  7. The route for the corps from the GWCC Marshaling Yard on Ivan Allen Blvd to MBS changes slightly this year in that they will come down Northside Drive and cut through the Home Depot Backyard where they have time for a final warm up. Convenient for fans in that this is literally right outside the stadium.

I recommend Pre paying for parking to reserve/guarantee a spot. While not too much happening there is a private event at the GWCC that has bought out two parking lots reducing the availability of spots overall.

  8. Perhaps this is mentioned somewhere in 509 pages of comments but is the member that stays backfield during the whole performance an alternate or a member that got injured and can’t march the show?  I noticed they do participate for about 1 minute of the show so assume that can’t be an alternate, right?

  9. What a fantastic season SOA!!  So proud of what my hometown corps accomplished this year. It has not only been fun to watch the performances, but almost equally as fun to read all of the positive comments about the production from viewers on this forum including those from SOA fans but also just drum corps fans that didn’t expect this. If there was an award for most improved corps from 2017, I think SOA would take it. I’m hopeful they can carry that momentum into 2019!  I’ve followed this corps closely since the early 2000s and there have been some bumpy years, but those make years like this that much more exciting.

This. It seems particularly cruel for it to be THESE two corps fighting for that last spot.  It'd be nice to be able to see both the delta and the Maltese cross at retreat from each other again.

This is sooo true!!  It would be fantastic to see both on the field together at retreat, maybe 2019!!  So proud of SOA this year. They really surprised a lot of us, in a good way.
