  1. I have no insight, because I haven't seen anyone yet. But I just wanted to point out that every year without fail, folks pick Glassmen and Blue Knights -- more than just about any other corps -- as corps that will fall out of the top 12. And every year, they don't.

Not saying they will or won't, but they certainly always seem to be most everyone's Failcorps.

  2. I might be the only one, but when I saw that first picture of the Spirit uniform in this thread, I liked it quite a bit. But then when I saw the picture of them on the field, I liked them less. Wonder why that is?

Regardless, I always wait to decide whether I like a uniform until I've seen it on the field live, preferably under the lights.

  3. JD's a tremendous brass arranger. There were many wonderful moments in the show from that perspective, and the horn line did a very capable job with a complex horn chart. And the drum line played another great book, which fits nicely among their recent work over the past several years, and did so with panache and clarity. More right than wrong, musically!

It's going on the iPod. With good reason!

I agree with all of this, the bolded part in particular. I'd be very happy to arrange a horn book half as well as JD.

  4. I am most disappointed with Lucas Oil, and I certainly think the roof should have been open. I think we had some self-serving directors get in the way of that one when DCI should have been thinking of its fans and of what was promised when we moved to Lucas Oil in the first place.

That being said, I am not calling for anyone's head or job loss. That will not solve anything either.

I am sure Dan is a great guy, and I have heard nothing but positive things about him and his work ethic for DCI.

To all the people at DCI I truly am impressed with all the work you have to do, and you probably do not get the support you need.

    That being said...

You need to somehow get ahold of that organization and make it what it needs to be. Too often the BOD (the corps directors) are running the ship a shore, mostly for their artsy fartsy creation needs, or so they can give their corps some sort of advantage. Or they are dealing with issues of "Fairness" when, in fact, you should be trying to sell tickets and see to it that fans have the best sound and sight experience. As an NFL stadium, Lucas Oil will be one of the very best, completely state-of-the-art. But for DCI, it's a wreck, and without the roof open I believe you have a real problem.

Getting out of the ESPN deal was good. I agree with others about that. And I love where the Fan Network can go in terms of fan entertainment and revenue for DCI. That is getting better and better.

But I do hope to see DCI push into other areas and look to bridge the gap between the needs of the corps and their performers, and the needs of the fans. I believe the fan will always feel somewhat shafted at times of economic uncertainty when the model for show producers is to raise ticket prices. The corps have raised prices, souvies are more expensive, and they all need so much more money just to compete these days (you know, so they can afford that expensive corps staff that will supposedly help them "Create" a show and "Win" more). Some of those people are lacking some serious talent and yet the corps are paying top dolloar...and then WE pay top dollar.

Well, I got news, anytime prices are raised, people expect the very best for that money. They don't want corps directors whining like little girls about fairness, or how their skirts might look in the rain, or how the flags will flow in the wind, or the backdrop, or any of that crap. What is this? The girl scouts! I thought these corps were tough. Then I get to finals and hear a lot of whining, yet fans are being tossed aside even though they are flipping the bill, in a bad economy.

So come on DCI, get aggressive. Make a difference and get to work on next year. I have a feeling ticket sales are going to be bad, at least early on, and that is when you need the cash.

If Dan Acheson ever does decide to step down, I'd like to nominate Jonathan Willis as his replacement.

  5. So, wait a minute...let's look at what finshed way above them...retro shows many of them...Copeland...Gershwin...Dvorak would have fit right in...with an appropriate update or several.

I'm really just playing the Devil's Advocate here. I don't doubt New World could be redone and redone well. My only comment was how such programming would come off in relation to their recent programming. Given the landscape of this year's shows, I don't doubt it would have fit in well.

New World with the right visual package...4 to 5 places better at the least.

And the bold above is, quite obviously, the problem. I really think the Red Violin, with the right visual package, could have placed higher by about three places.

  6. Coming off of Spartacus, wouldn't New World have come off as too obvious? Kind of a "Hey, we re-constituted Spartacus and won, maybe New World will too?"

Of course, now that they had such a rough year (for them at least), now it would almost seem desperate for 2010. I'm all for New World in 2011!

  7. What were youwatchng when you saw Phantom. there is noway they had a better visual show than Boston and the Bluestars. Is it that hard to say. It dosent matter if Phantom won last year they were down visually. The only strong part of the corps was the Drum line, and horn line. The color guard did a good job performing easy flag.rifle and sabre work. Deal with it every corps from 7 to 12 has been there yes it is possible for Phantom to be in 9th and to have a less than average visual score. the judge was correct.

    Dear ilovenewengland,

Please read my post slowly. I see you might be unaccustomed to reading full sentences with proper construction, so take extra time with the punctuation. If you've read any of my posts this year, you'll remember that I have been critical of their visual all season. However, my point was that in the grand scheme of their largely weaker visual captions, visual performance was stronger than visual ensemble, GE visual or colorguard. But overall we agree (I think, given the difficulty I had interpreting your post): the judge (isn't there more than one?) got it right.

  8. Diff'rent strokes. The Blue Knights are one of my very favorite corps, and I loved their show this year.
I agree. This was the first BK show I've liked in a while.

Me, too. I enjoyed this year's show far more than most of their other offerings. Definitely not a hot dog corps for me.
