  1. Well, to be clear, I'm not calling it a "bad year." There are aspects of the visual design which I do think are "bad," but I can keep things in perspective, overall. "Disappointing" is probably a better year to describe the year as a whole (AND let's be clear again: there's still time - it's not decided yet).

  2. There isn't much that is going to help them. After watching the Fan Network video from Houston, I have to say...that drill is just....bad. Bad forms, bad staging...bad.

The guy caught a severe case of beginner's luck last year, and lucked out by having an immensely talented corps with a great vehicle. This year...the show design is just not there. The music is repetitious, the only real interesting part is the Red Violin soundtrack stuff. The guard is just....well....awful. I am not slamming on the kids, because obviously they have the talent to compete. The design is just not there.

I shook my head in amazement last year when Phantom decided to go with a total unknown at drill writer, and then when they picked up a color guard staff that was responsible for a guard that was pretty low in Finals last year. The brass and percussion obviously still know what they are doing, but once again, the Achilles' Heel is visual, and it is going to keep them from the top 6 this year.

For the love of God, Phantom, go out and get a proven drill writer next year. Make an offer to Mitch Rogers or Myron Rosander, and stop putting limitations on them. I have heard rumors that there is some pressure on these guys who write for Phantom not to take too many risks that could make the horns sound bad. Well, tough! Cavaliers and Cadets have won horns several more times than you have, with more interesting visual packages, maybe it is time to drop that philosophy. It would explain why Leon May and Jamey Thompson both left Phantom.

If they are not careful, they will have a repeat of 1998 to 2002 on their hands.

I just watched the Houston video, and your post pretty much sums up my thoughts. I hadn't had the chance to see their rewrites since I saw the show in the early season, but I have to say: change for the sake of change does not necessarily improve the product. The drill issues that were there in June are still there, despite the rewrites. But when the person who messed up the drill in the first place (and make no mistake, even last year's drill was not good until it too was rewritten) does the rewrites, what do you expect?

I'm not really a "guard person," so I can't speak to that area. But the staging, at times, is really lacking. Regardless, it's clear that guard remains an issue for them. I so badly want the best for this corps (at the same time, I was pretty happy for Blue Stars last night....). What's hard for me isn't so much where they're currently sitting competetively, but that I look at the show and don't see the vehicle to move up more than a spot or two, regardless of how well they clean it up.

Hoo boy. I've probably done gone and lost my "Regiment Homer" membership card now.

  3. 1. Cadets

    2. Crown

    3. BD

    4. Cavies

    5. SCV

    6. Bluecoats

    7. Boston

    8.Blue Stars

    9. Blue Knights

    10. Glassmen

    11. Spirit

    12. Madison

SCV will NOT beat Crown or Cadets.

BD may possibly overtake whomever comes in second.

Crown or Cadets could come in 1st.

Wow. That'll get the Regiment staff fired for sure!

  4. Phantom 4th in guard again... only .25 in front of the Glassmen. Almost 2 whole points behind HNC's guard, who placed first.

I was just going to post about this. Guard is really holding them back right now. I knew they had visual issues (not just guard) weeks ago, but was hopeful that the changes that were on the way would fix them. Guess not. I'm not counting them out of it just yet -- there's still time. But not a lot.
