A 2.5% error (which is .5 in a single caption) is not tolerated in any industry I know of.

Probably have to check and see who judged. My guess is that judge on Finals night judged earlier in the season and had BD above SCV in guard. Even though the judges are told to judge the performance in front of them, some judges seem to have favoritism. I'm not saying this particular judge did that, but that could possibly explain it. Winning guard by .2 one night, and then losing by .3 seems large to me as well. I have always thought of it like this: a .1 gap means they are barely ahead of the next group, .2 there is a discernible difference, but still in the same ball park, and .3 gap would mean they are almost not in the same ball park. So, having one judge have one group ahead, and then almost not in the same ball park the next night seemed like a bit of a statement to me. Just my 2 cents, for whatever that's worth. lol

Prepare yourself for the most predictable show on turf.  The judges know exactly where to put everyone.  The placements aren't dictated from on high, but rather agreed upon communally. The judges all know each other well and talk at shows.  There are no surprises in a season that happens this fast and with this many performances.  The judging community has critiqued itself probably more than the instructors have.  I bet every judge knows what every other judge is about to say to each corps and what scores those words will yield.

Which FloMarching broadcast was it that had Steve and Dennis do the intro from the field?  Dennis said it's a story of tightly grouped "pairs" of corps - SCV & BD, Bluecoats & Crown, Madison & Mandarins.  He already gave us a glimpse into the nature of seeding in DCI.  And let's not forget that Dennis was a WGI judge for years, so it's not like he doesn't get how numbers work.

It's not a conspiracy, but it is a truth.  The more consistent placements are through a season the more likely they will remain unchanged.  That's how tendencies work - they TEND to stay the same.  As long as nobody sets the dome on fire or kicks Dan Acheson's kitten in the face the status quo will sustain itself.

So now that the competition isn't a thing any more, let's all enjoy the shows for what they are and be impressed by the performers for who they've become.

The judges do not agree communally what the scores will be, nor do they know what scores each judge will give each corps.

Asks why people keep bashing corps... and then proceeds to bash BD anyways

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What I was trying to get across is that it doesn't matter if they sound the "same" every year. They are good. The Blue Devils are always super clean, and that's always good too. Paul Rennick's drumline are always great, and have the "same" kind of feel every year as well. None of these things are bad. That's what I was trying to say.

I really hate the degree to which this is accurate re Crown.

"The need someone  who can write a show that doesn't sound like every other show they've done for a lot of years. "

This sounds like the Blue Devils to me; the same 'ole sound every year. Carolina Crown's brass sounds wonderful and performs at a high level every year. Why must we beat down the competition? It's like saying the Blue Devils march the best every year.... Or, I guess are the cleanest every year. Why so much bashing?

So are we now going with these definitions?
Show = Event Attended & Year   (San Antonio 2001)
Program = Corps Name & Year   (Santa Clara Vanguard 1999)

I almost can't decide between 1998 and 1999 SCV. 1998 was my first year marching, and SCV was the first corps I saw. That show inspired me, and still does today; I get chills listening to it even today. 1999 in Madison, watching SCV live, and the tie... that was my favorite show. So, they are both winners for me!

Caught in 1999, 2001, 2004, 2008.  If we can go back a little further, DEFINITELY caught in 1995.  Caught by Regiment in 2006.  Sometimes they get too confident in a program and their ability to outperform others that they forget that sometimes the corps chasing them are catching them because they have more content.

I would think any year that the Blue Devils don't win, they get caught by someone. They always start out at the top.

Anything is possible. But if BD follows their pattern of the last several seasons, they will be putting in the finishing touches of the show this week and debut them at the Buffalo TOC next Sunday. Lets see what they add and if it makes a difference.

True; the comment about performance beating the content numbers made me think of the peaking thing. We shall see. It will be exciting, especially since BD and SCV only see each other one more time until finals week.
