Hey there,
I marched Contra with SR in '81. I remember the day we got those new Kings and we unloaded them out of the shipping crates. We practically threw our old valve-rotor horns on the ground when the truck drove up!! That was the first time in my life I had seen such a gorgeous new instrument. We each just got to pick a crate, unload it, and take it home to start lapping the valves and slide. I remember sitting for hours lapping and oiling trying to get the valves worked in before tour. We all got together to build those special wood crates that we used to carry them on tour. I think we stenciled mine "Tex."
I don't have any of my pics of those days scanned, but I'll try and do that soon and send you some. I became a SR traitor when I left for Garfield in '82, but I'll never forget all the other Corps oogling over those Kings all season long in '81.
In case you don't know, several of the original SR K-90's belong to Ben Hur Shrine D&BC down in Austin. I got a chance to be reunited with one of them a few years ago and they are still awesome horns.
