The Kingsmen! Man I just loved them.
-
Ah the Kiltles, they always seemed like bikers in kilts. I loved them. One of my favorite drum corps pieces is their version of Roundabout by Yes.
-
When you are traveling around Wisconsin (insert favorite State here) and you remember which towns had drum corps of their own, and which towns you marched parades in.
-
It's not Madison Scouts Cadets, but rather Madison Jr. Scouts.
-
Argonne Rebels from what's listed.
Madison Jr. Scouts and Capitolaires should be on there.
Edit: Oops, I see the Jr. Scouts in an other poll.

UH-Excuse me but,
It's impossible to "show up" "TBDBITL!!! :P
Man, we drank your drum line under the table in 1979.
Seriously, they were a great bunch of guys and gals, and great hosts. They threw one "heck" of a party for us. :mmm:
I think we can both agree, Michigan-Overrated :P

When you see go-go boots (I know, I'm old school) and think to yourself how sexy Anaheim's guard or Troopers guard was in their skirts and boots.
When the sight of a boat paddle makes you wince. (Old schooler's will know.)
Yah Baby!

More show, less features.
Some features might be:
1 – Quick, basic explanation of the difference between drum corps and bands.
2 – Basic explanation of scoring
3- You want some “human interest”? How about following one corps member for a summer. Better yet, since this is an advertising tool and not an entertainment show, follow a rook for the summer. This is what you are in for if you join a corps. Talk about time commitment, try-outs, cost, camaraderie, traditions, etc.
Each feature no more than 2 minutes, except number 3, that can get 3.5 to 4 minutes.
Talk about Div II & III, and show some of the corps.
And did I mention, more show-less features.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter. ;-)

When you polish your dress shoes like your life's on the line!
And if you still do it with shoe polish, a lighter, spit, and a nylon (no one at the office believes me when I tell them that).

Most of my time marching was in the Madison Scouts Jr. Corps. The corps that comes to mind for me after all these years was the Windjammers out of Port Washington, WI. It seems like they always beat us by just “that” much. Man, I hated that.
In the Scouts I think the biggest rivals were the Kilts and Cavies because of proximity. Now, in my year with the Scouts (1975), I can honestly say that we wanted to crush everyone equally.
P.S. - While in the UW Marching Band I think we were always out to show up (and did) Michigan and Ohio State.

Thanks for the info on the web site. I love your corps. I'm going to have to drive down to this Patrick's place and check out some old school shows on the TV's.
-
And why is your web site still down? :P
-
it wasn't interesting, they didn't show enough of the show, and he turned it off half way through
I was watching with my 11 year old daughter, whom I had taken to her first show this year (she loved it), and she fell asleep.

DCA - a good fit for me.

Now that's funny! I salute you. :mmm:

Oh, and my wife thought Madison singing YNWA with harmonies was the neatest part of the night.
It was.

I thought it was terrible! Four minutes of a show followed by a bunch of fluff is not worth my time. I realize I am not the target audiance for this show. I went to bed after 51 minutes of that mess.
Aecheson (sp?), you owe me 51 minutes of sleep.

I saw MBI this last weekend also. I was at their practice most of the day Saturday and their exibition Saturday night.
Snares - very tight, great dynamics and power
Tenors - amazing, really great parts, check out the 4 bar solo played by one of them in the show
Basses - One of the strenghts of the line IMO. Their timing and dynamics in their runs is very solid.
Cymbals - fun to watch, great technique, very stylish parts
Pit - might be the best section in the drum line. All of them have very good technique.
The book is very well written with lots of nuance and power when needed.
I haven't seen any of the other corps mentioned, so I can't speak as to where they rank in the field. If you get a chance to see the MBI line, check them out. They're really fun!

I've been wanting a corps to do this for years.
The Mad Hatter - Chick Corea
Some cool music and if you can't come up with a visual theme with this music, you shouldn't be a show designer.
Follow that up with Spain and you've got something.

I've always felt that Sound Pieces for Jazz Orchestra by the late Oliver Nelson would be a nice fit.
-
Don't forget that the question was POWERFUL as opposed to just LOUD. One is just pure decibel value, the other is comprised of balance, presence, tone, and sound quality.
The horn lines I remember from the early 70's as being really powerful are:
Argonne Rebels
Anaheim Kingsmen
Muchachos
and of course us (Madison)

Do corps still do standstills?
-
I wish we had been a lot smarter about using hearing protection back then. Between drum corps and playing drum set, I have suffered some hi-freq hearing loss and have tinnitus (constant hissing in the ears), although it's not too bad. I always use hearing protection when I play now.
CODI's comments on skin cancer are right on. We never used sun block back then either. I hope it doesn't show up down the line.
