Come to DCA, you'll have a great time. Ignore the dancing and let the horn and drum lines blow your face off -- and they really will.
It was a DCA show in Hastings, Minnesota. MN Brass, Governaires, Kilts (they had a lot of dudes that looked my age, very cool), RoyalAires (way old school), and the Racine Scouts (nice to see them still going, although they were so few in numbers).
I had a lot of fun. I'm just not used to all the crap on the sidelines. It doesn't look as clean to me, however, I have no frame of reference to all of the changes that seem to have taken place. At some point is there no longer a big difference between Drum and Bugle Corps and drum corps style bands?
I'm sure the scoring must be different now too (stop time, motion time, ticks, etc.) The shows seemed shorter than when I marched, I'm not sure of the time limit these days.
I will certainly go to more shows in Minnesota next year, it's only been 30 years.
BTW Jojo, I see you marched with SCV in my era. I always loved your guard
and drumline. -

Hmmmmm...I went to an All Age Corp event this summer, the first show I've been to in over 25 years. It was a gas. I haven't seen the finals broadcast yet, so I can't weigh in on the amps/props/dancing thing yet.
I think I watched a tape of the finals in 1992, and the whole dancing guard thing wasn't working for me then.
Remeber when guards marched and spun, and if you played it, you carried it? Was it really that long ago?

Just remember, the biggest difference between a wooden clarinet and a plastic clarinet is that the plastic ones give off a nice orange glow when you burn them.

I marched in the Madison Jr. Scouts and the Madison Scouts in the early-mid 70's. I quit after the 1975 season and walked completely away from D.C. (burn-out). I have just recently (this summer) begun to check it out again, and to my dismay many of the greatest, most storied corps in history are no longer in operation or are not operating in Open Class (or division one if you will).
I know I’ve had my head in the sand for the last 30 years, but I would like to know what happened to the following corps, why they folded or moved into a lower division or became all age corps.

Anaheim Kingsmen
Argonne Rebles
Oakland Crusaders
Kilties
Blue Stars
St. Andrews Bridgemen
Muchachos
And any other of the great corps of the past that I failed to mention.

Man, it would be great to see the Kingsmen back as a Jr. Corps. They were my second favorite corps growing up (can you say Mambo?). Good Luck, maybe that will get a more "old school" movement going with drum corps.
I agree on the Kilties, we had a great rivalry with them. I thought I saw that the Blue Stars where going back to Division I next year. I think that's great. Back in the 60's and 70's there were so many great corps from Wisconsin, all with local talent and a lot of community connectedness.

Anyway, you want to know why it bothers me at all? It's a bit like Madison without Scott Stewart, or Madison allowing girls. Wait . . .
Well, the Scouts were great before Scott Stewart, they were great with Scott Stewart, and they will be great after Scott Stewart.
From looking at the scores, the show seems to be working well. If they were to put it in for the sake of putting it in, it might detract from the show. Who knows?
I like the fact that they are doing better in the standings. It’s a drum corps competition, not a drum corps exhibition, or did I miss something in the last 25 plus years.

1972 Kingsmen - Their guard blew me away. Total class.
1974 SCV - Their drum line blew me away. They made it look easy.
1975 Madison Scouts - I marched in that one and it was as much fun to do as it was to watch.

Dan, I just saw the Kilts on Saturday night in Hastings, MN. Great job! It was really fun. It was the first drum corps show I've been to in over 25 years, and my daughter's first show ever. When the Royal-Airs did "God Bless the Child" I got goosebumps. I loved their "Old-School" show.
I thought the Kilts got scored low, but I have no understanding of the scoring criteria these days. I thought you guys rocked!

1975, without a doubt. One of the all time great shows. Everything came together that year. It was special.

I think starting with CYO, with all of the big guns together for the first time, it started to get tight.
You're right about that Jim Elvord horn line, they amazed us every day at practice.
