  1. Jimmy...

I am your friend. DO NOT HURRY BACK from hernia repair, please whatever you do. The corps will be fine. I am saying this from experience. Incisional hernias need to HEAL WELL, or they just rip again. You have many friends that want to see you back, of course, but dont rush it.

Nobody can do it like you, but there are people that would what they can to make sure that when you come back, you come back 100%.

    I hope you listen...DALE I am serious.

    Donny

Ditto that! 2 umbical and 1 ventral hernia surgery later, I got some experience there too! I tried to come back from first one, only to have it give out and need the 2nd one 11 months later. Tried to get back to playing too soon and tore it up. Get well, my friend. Take the time to HEAL properly and you'll be fine, we all hope. It's a drag....ask DA when I had to miss the 96 season with Empire!

    All the best!

  2. If you go back and read the original post, it doesn't appear that the problems Cru are experiencing are related to bodies on the field so much as decisions made by corps management off the field. Simply moving the base of operations won't solve those problems or problems resulting from poor business decisions. I wish Cru the best in getting their house in order and returning to the field soon!

AND, if you read my post, I said a move MAY be a timely idea. I also said that, if the corps management felt a move was necessary, that was their decision. I am not involved with the Crusader management so I don't know exactly what prompted the decision to go inactive. However, I am an alumni of the corps and know many of those involved. Many, MANY terrific people who live and breath for the corps. I, like many on here, are only assuming what the circumstances are. Also,in a previous post, I stated something very similar to your observation of the announcement.

Let's just leave it at this; The Crusaders management will do what they need to do to reorganize and come back to the activity ASAP. We love you and wish nothing but the best.

  3. I will pray that right decisons are made and CRU starts up in September this year.

    AMEN!

I think if the directors decide that a move is in order, they will move. After the failure in Erie last year, people went to both ES and Cru. Some even went to the White Sabres! I personally saw over 25 horns at 2 rehearsals in Erie, but percussion and guard were an issue. A base of operations in the Buffalo area, with an outreach to western PA/eastern Ohio and the southern tier of NY may be a timely idea.

I can only echo the sentiments for a speedy return for the Fabulous Crusaders!

  4. Sky is still trying to stay afloat but Westshoremen and Yankee Rebels have been gone for a while.

I think Don was pointing out that both of these corps took a "time out" and came back. Westshore. specifically, rose from the ashes a couple of times. Hell, they won DCA in 1996! The Skyliners came out of inactive status to win class A, and the Sunrisers and Grenadiers continue as class A copmpetitors, after being sidelined.

It sucks that ANY corps has to go "inactive". We can only hope that the Crusaders can make it back to active status and not fold completely.

  5. Actually, we have an alumni corps that is currently rehearsing. The next Star Alumni Corps camp is in December:

    Star Alumni Corps Schedule

As with most corps, there's typically a "show and tell" portion at the conclusion of each Star Alumni Corps camp (mid-day on Sunday) that is open to the public. Although I do not speak for Star United, as a member I'll gladly pay for the airfare, car rental, and hotel room for a DCA representative to attend "show and tell" if it is deemed necessary.

Heck, if Dick Pronti comes, I'll petition the corps to allow him to be named an honorary member of the mellophone section and participate as a mellophonist for the entire weekend. We can show him the secret handshake, cook smores together, tell ghost stories with a lit flashlight under our chins, and brief him on the secrets of "breathe dah" and the mello chest.

Dick can also visit my condo in Indianapolis, play with my four cats, inventory my refrigerator, and photograph my sock drawer if it would alleviate any concerns of the Hall of Famers.

Unretouched images of the most recent Star Alumni Corps camp in August are readily available at the Star United Web Site (click here). In these images you'll see the dues paying Star Alumni Corps members who are also participants of Star United. Incidentally, the Star United site was updated in July to offer more information about the corps and add some transparency to those who have concerns about our organization.

I'd like to stress that Star United does not, and has never owned or operated any black helicopters. We have also severed all ties with the Rand Corporation.

If any investigations need to occur, I suggest we explore the curious involvement of a Star of Indiana mellophonist's connection with the Kennedy assassination (click here).

    Genkus!

Stop with the conspiracy BS and "they weren't an alumni corps" crap. Star has a mini corps, a very GOOD mini corps and that is that. Any other talk of things other than congrats is moot. Grow up people!!

Personally, I would like to congratulate Star United for TYING the record for most consecutive mini corps wins. They share that honor with the Erie Thunderbirds (1992-1996).

    Carry on.

  6. Hey Frank,

IMHO Let me be the first to say I do not agree that it is a given that Star will win. I think both Mass Brass and the Golden Eagles can never be counted out when there is a competion. With that said, when I watch a show it is important for me to be entertained first and formost. And, I was entertained by Mass Brass and the Golden Eagles last year in Rochester. More so then Star. I thought Star was technically very very good and got high execution marks in my book. But for my enjoyment and entertainment, I like Mass Brass and Golden Eagles all around. I also think the arranging is important and felt that Mass and Golden had a great book. Star's book to me was like the Arbans book. I think it is a three way dead heat for first. Now...............is there a sleeper out there who can get in there? I hope so! See you then, Joe

What he said! Good luck to all the mini corps and may the AUDIENCE win!

  7. Am I the only one who remembers Donny Allen's solo in "Legend Of The One Eyed Sailor" - Phoenix 1976?

I thought about that one last night as I was going over my list. That was one hot solo, and Donny wrote it,yes? One of my all time favorites.

John Grass and George "Sidemouth" Richardson remain my heroes!

All of the great soloists the Cabs have had through the years are truly an inspiration to any young soprano player growing up in the 70"s ( ahem....like me!)

Keith Lentz 1976 Erie Thunderbirds was amazing.

Dave "Boots" Martin and Mike DeMayo(sp) both had HUGE sound and excellent tone quality.

The list goes on, but I must go to work!!

  8. Yeah... just checked it out on weather.com. Outstanding.

Aside from the terrific lineup of corps in competition and exhibition, the show will be a tribute to one of the all-time great people in drum corps... Doc Sebastianelli.

    Fran

Did he pass and I missed it??

  9. Rained a little during the show. At the PARTY though, it was hot and sunny. One of the best parties I've been to in quite some time. Huge party. WOW! It was the best party I've been to in quite a while. Oh......wait a minute...........there was no party. Must have been a dream. THUNDERBIRDS won the show. We were about to win the party as well, but, no party. So we won the parking lot. Me and Tommy D. I must have had 4.........or 16 Labatt's Blue. I can't remember 'cause I was disappointed that there was no Drum Corps after-the-show-get-together. That was kinda sad.

This is my opinion. My opinion does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the THUNDERBIRDS. Sometimes I fly my own "pattern."

I am Nick. I played my Soprano yesterday in "Jimtown." Tommy D was there with me. He played some high notes on his Soprano.

    What about our "chauffer"?

  10. SEVERE Thunder Storm watch til 9pm----from Weather Channel

It did sprinkle a bit during Excelsior and White Sabers show, mostly an annoying drizzle. Then a heavier rain during Empire's show. It cleared and there was never any lightning. DM only retreat. I think we were the only corps totally dry!

I had a blast as it was my first DCA show in 6 years! Congrats to all the corps and kudos to the Crusaders! Their show needs some work, but it was not as bad as I was led to believe. The kids have been working hard to improve and the quality level was much higher than I expected. GO CRU!

Bummer of the night: no after show party!
