And the winner is..........BLUECOATS!!

Recaps are up. Scouts winning color guard jumped out at me. Looks like things are moving in a positive direction. When was the last time Madison had the highest color guard score at any contest? Yes, this was against a small number of corps and not those traditionally in the Top 5, but this again signifies to me that good things are happening at the Scouts. Rebuilding the brand appears to be showing some immediate results.
Madison's guard is MUCH better than any of the past 10 years I can remember. It is also one of the biggest guards they've had in a while, which makes me wonder if they brought in new staff or something. Whatever the reason, it's working. Kudos! I noticed the improvement instantly on the fan network.

I'm waiting to hear/see the Boston Crusaders show. Otherwise, my mind is made up. Honorable Mention to the Blue Knights. I LOVE the ballad!
-
Crown and Blue Stars have some of the hardest weapon and flag work out there
Later,
Mike
Agreed. Blue Stars work this year is RIDICULOUS! So is Crown's, but that's pretty typical as of the last few years.
-
Take them to watch a practice. Getting up close and personal with an outstanding DCI guard is very different than watching it on youtube :)
Exactly. IT'S A DIFFERENT WORLD. TRUST ME!!!

What are your top 3 shows for the 2010 season? This is not necessarily your favorite corps historically, but which shows have you the most excited?
My faves are:
1) Blue Stars
2) Bluecoats
3) Madison Scouts/Cavaliers (I chose MS on the poll, though). This is absolutely CRAZY because these are not my favorite corps. My favorite corps are Phantom Regiment, Carolina Crown and Cavaliers, but the first two corps' shows just aren't doing it for me. I hope you can be objective as well!

I know things can sure change, but do ya'll see any of the current Top 12 as listed below falling back and any of the corps in the 13th-17th range having something up their sleeve to break into the Top 12? There is a gap in scores between #12 and #13 right now and based on reviews, I'm don't see any of these current finalists falling out of a Saturday night performance.
Current Top 12 (no particular order)
Crown
Blue Devils
SCV
Boston
Blue Stars
Bluecoats
Cavaliers
Cadets
Phantom Regiment
Glassmen
Blue Knights
Madison Scouts
Outside the Top 12 Looking In
Spirit
Crossmen
Troopers
Academy
Colts
Agreed.

it's just band, get over it. :)
anyway, the reason for me posting, I was going to start a thread to talk about how awesome blue stars mello book/line is, I am very impressed with them, the writing has a lot of phantomish (glissando's/very high register on chords etc) and cadetish (runs) type stuff and it's great. The line is playing it well too! ... but i read this thread first and seems it had been talked about already so just wanted to add that there is one more person who loves that mello line :)
Well put. I think the Blue Stars have more cleaning to do than most corps, which gives them a lot of potential to move up in the rankings. Regardless, this is going to be one FINE product come finals week. I'm absolutely OBSESSED with this show. The mellos, guard, and percussion are rockin' it. The drumline is SMEXY!
-
I consider myself to be an SCV fan, but I absolutely HATE this show. Although I realize what is on the fan network is not indicative of the final product, I hope some things change DRASTICALLY for the vanguard. That's all I have to say.
Just keepin' it real. Don't get mad at me

I'm obsessed with this show. Up there with Phantom and Crown as my faves right now. I want them to finish in the top 6 so badly. Just gotta clean up Nixon in China like CRAZY!!!
Agreed!!
-
The only corps that has surprised me (in a good way) this season is the BLUE STARS!!! I couldn't make it past the 2:30 mark on the DCI Fan Network! WOW!!!!
MELLOS

I certainly agree that there are more championship level shows this year than in recent years past. I would have to say top 4 for sure, with SCV being a stretch. This, too, is my fav. year top to bottom since 2000.
I disagree that last year, and def. not 07, had 4-5 champ. level shows. PR, BD and Cavies were it. Sorry, plain and simple.
I think the Blue Devils will remain undefeated this year, but I think the Cavies are the sleeper corps. I think people have counted them out, but I wouldn't just yet.

Citations guard is SICK! Now, only if the perc. could get it together!s
-
According to dci.org all 19 corps will be performing at Friday's semifinals. The two bottom corps (probably Stentors and Blue Saints) will be in exhibition not competition.
This is pretty ridiculous. Why not change the numbers to 10 finalists, 15 semi-finalists. I just think that the competition aspect (and let's face it, that's what this is about) is a joke. Having marched open class (or Div II) in a year that was stacked with competition, I think that this is a way in which competition can stay alive.

Alright Boston!
That's really surprising, although I do enjoy their show.
My faves are as follow:
1) Crown: Mellos and Guard alone are enough to make this my fave crown show ever
2) Cavaliers: It's an interesting concept, but I really like the show. It's pretty simple, and nothing really "wows" me, but I like the concept.
3) SCV-- This show makes me smile. Period. I really appreciate this show more than anyone else's because SCV seems like they are truly not trying to "outperform" other people. They are doing it for the audience, and themselves. I love you SCV!

Regiment. ;)
Great loyalty

Cavies should've won that year. BD should've won 04.
BD's show in 03 was too good for them not to win it that time. 04 maybe, but I loved the 007 show. The ending is SICK!!!
-
Cavies are right there, IMO. The book is there, but the execution isn't quite there yet. Again, IMO.
-
and they are not... they'll be too busy celebrating 75 years of excellence and innovation in northern Jersey :)
Excellence? Agreed! Innovation? Not so much!
-
I'm a euph player, but I truly think that the mello section makes/breaks the corps. Although all the corps' mello sections has some nice licks, especially the Cavies, I'm going to have to go with Crown. There are several sections that feature the mellos, and I can't help but get goose bumps. What's your opinion?
-
With Lennie Machado and Rich Rigolini at the helm, and a strong spartans presence that have worked with lennie for years, yea citations will win guard
Ok duh. I thought so, though.
-
Citations for sure. I REALLY enjoyed watching them last year as well. Is the staff from Spartans a few years ago?
-
Man, the scores are TOTALLY inconsistent. I doubt the corps are varying THAT much in their performance. I'm not a Cadets fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I think they totally got ripped in GE Vis
Do you think Richard Saucedo is being tough on the Cavies' judging

It seems to me that his scores for the Cavies in various captions have been substandard. What are your thoughts on the matter? Is he trying to protect himself from accusations of "favoring" the Cavaliers over other corps?
