Funny, it’s been in my head this week that they must’ve done Sweeney. I guess not. It would be a good fit, and a new challenge that departs from their usual upbeat feel good stuff.

They've used "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" (prelude number in the musical) more than once, but not done the complete score. I think its unlikely they well, as they create most shows from multiple sources, but I saw the Josh Groban revival a few months ago and it really is phenomenal. With the first full orchestra since the original.

  2. I prefer the new ending drill, even if it still needs a bit of cleaning. The moving back to frame the art was such a hard move, plus it was visually receding from the audience, while the music was expanding toward them.

This actually allows the orange edges to pop way more, as there is not all the competing color of the horn uniforms in such close proximity.

Well they don’t really serve any role in the show until the end. That’s not so much a criticism, it’s just fact. Usually BDs props are used by the corps for staging and such.

??? They are used constantly throughout the show. Sometimes to elevate individual or groups of performers, tilted up to create entrances/exits, or with people hanging on them by one hand - holding a "cut out" body silhouette shape either still or while playing/spinning with the other hand.

  4. I thought I was having another senility moment because I don’t remember any voiceovers in Cadets from last weekend, but I see now they are indeed new. 😂

Does it help? Maybe? While musically enjoyable, a clear theme wasn’t communicating before. Now it is. Not sure it is what they originally envisioned with the costuming, but it is something definitive, at least.

New gold silks at the end help too. The prior ones were pretty colorless.

Someone explained it to me as: GE breakdown follows the structure of the score sheet, which (read left to right) places visual captions before music. So GE 1 = visual, GE 2 = music. They could have been lying but that helped me remember.

That's what I thought, but then I was like - how did they lose visual GE of all things?!! 😂 Say what?! 😄

BD is being tested, and that is good. The most notable thing to me is that Bloo last night nearly erased the GE edge BD had so far this season. Winning GE is not BD’s only path to winning overall, but it sure kept the margins up.

Is GE1 more visual and GE2 more music or none of that or does it vary from show to show based on judges? I don't remember how it has been restructured. They won individual visual and music captions, so I dunno.

It did seem in the GE that they lost, it was with lower achievement scores relative to content, while they put Bloo at equal a/c or outperforming content. So the judges might have been sending the message that you have the program, but don't relax with the achievement level you have now - keep pushing/cleaning.

It's sometimes easy to forget that the judges ARE there to be helpful.

  7. Ok I need a senility check:

PC now uses double blue swing flags in the ballad. Weren’t they running around with pieces of white fabric before??

Cavaliers props are now white. I think they were silver prior to this??

What’s the deal with Troopers sun? Seems to be randomly turned off and on now and different each show lately? I personally preferred it when it came on at the first hit and then only stopped when it got caught. It was hypnotic and didn’t pull too much focus.

Now I keep looking at when it’s off because it tends to stop in the halfway position.

Troopers almost a full point over Blue Stars!

One of the oddest stories of this year is the Blue Stars.  So much talent, so much hype. The show isn’t bad but all of the pieces are not coming together.

Is there enough gas in the tank to turn it up these last few days?

    it’s so bizarre.

They haven’t seemed to make noticeable changes/improvements to the design as the season has progressed. Seems largely as premiered. Taking 75% of the show to complete the costume change has likely not helped. It really dilutes the impact.

I like the program more than what they did last year, but to succeed these days  you really have to have a growth plan so the product doesn’t feel stale by the end of the season.

The brass and drill are really nice, though.

Someone early season called it lyrical.  It really is.  They finish phrases so elegantly

That was me who said it, and they have developed such a distinctive style. There was a close up rehearsal vid of a flag segment on insta the other day that I watched over and over. It’s like the equipment is an extension of their bodies. There was not one moment where the person and flag looked like they were fighting against each other.

It’s remarkable that they’ve been able to get it SO clean. It’s a continuous flow with almost no hard edges.

Wow a big ole 30min episode. Incredible.

This is really great. The star “bombs” in Icarus being the reason for the Charles de Gaulle audio is very clever.

Also to the instructor who says “sometimes execution is the most exciting effect in the show” — period! preach, king!

Well, the "mid-season report" turned into the "7/8ths of the season report," so I would guess they combined several planned segments. I knew about the war section (though not the drumline artillery fire), but the the ballad being about the chapel was a revelation. I think that explains the etherial nature of its opening segment we have been discussing.

Also great to have an extended bit of the guard tech masters drilling the tiny inconsistencies.

The joy they ALL have throughout the entire production is so apparent.

I agree. If i came off as being disappointed or negative, that is exactly the opposite of my intent.  I think all of the corps put on great performances DESPITE being exhausted!

They did and you did not come off as negative! I don't know how any of them are pulling this stuff off this summer, honestly. It was hot and miserable at times back in the day, but these past few weeks in Texas and the South, man. I don't know how any of them are still upright.
