  1. Speaking of that, I remember a certain basics session in 89 where a rookie Soprano

player started b####### about his arms hurting from holding up the horn for so long...

At that point, our much feared marching instructor, Don Pitzer proceeded to take the

Sop out of his hands, give it to me and hand him my Eupho to carry for the rest of

the session...I must say, it was a very nice session after that! (For me anyway)

God I LOVE hearing stories like this!

Sop players......what can ya do LOL

Someday, I'll have to get the whole story on how a contra player from 1988 SCV (practically the EPITOME of low brass) would say to himself "gee, I think I'll go march BD next year."

you're close....I played FRENCH HORN in SCV, and MEEHAPHONE the next two years in BD. Never picked up a contrabass until Renegades.

  3. I'd like to think that the kids are marching corps to "have fun" first, and "winning" after that. Not that I don't think every corps out there isn't doing their best to be the best they can competitively, but corps is about having fun with a special group of people you can bond with and find a home amongst. Some people find that in the "winning" tier of corps, others find it elsewhere...........

  4. Ouch. I have been beaten into a pulp. Probably shouldnt have said anything about my band. Here is a video of us 2 years ago at about 2 weeks of cleaning -
I am saying that show could have been very clean in 3 full weeks (10 hours a day) of cleaning. Thats all I was trying to say.

I would LOVE to march drum corps more than anything int his world pretty much. However I am of the LDS faith, and serving a Mission from 19-21 the exact years that I would be able to march, and therefore unable to do so. How I would love DCI to raise the age to 23. Anyway, thanks for the read, I guess I am just completely and totally arrogant.

No, you are NOT ARROGANT, but some of us who have poked at you are.

You are just..........ignorant's a strong word..........UNINFORMED. We all weren't born "knowing everything" about drum corps, and you won't learn it overnight. Some of what you are talking about, you learn by doing and can't sit back and analyze it on the chalkboard in class. And, since it appears that you won't have a chance to march in DCI, if there are any all age corps in your area I suggest you perhaps check them out for membership in the future.

P.S. Under certain circumstances (when is the age cutoff again?) you can march at age 22, so you should look into that as well.

  5. With 3 full weeks of pre tour, and several weekend long camps I would think that corps would be pretty clean... I look at the marching band I marched with, we would be relatively clean about a month into rehearsals, and we would only practice 4 times a week for 3 hours. Are corps just pretty dirty because their programs are so intense, or what? I just think that if my band was given 3 full weeks of rehearsal we would be ridiculously clean to the point of almost perfection. I know our programs arent as difficult, but we had harder programs than anyone else in my state did, so what do you think???

Oh boy.........................I hope you put on your flame retardant suit!!!!

  6. Bc you just cut the potential talent pool in half. now instead of taking the top 20 guy and top 20 girls, youre settling for 20 people who wouldnt have made the cut if it were a mixed guard. Yeah it's neat to see them have an all female guard and yeah it's tradition, but i'd rather see a competitive phantom regiment vs a non competitive. When's the last time they had a really good all female guard? Competitively this is a stupid move.

I couldn't be happier. It restores the balance.

    1) We have male/female guards in the top 12.

    2) We have ALL MALE guards in the top 12.

Now, FINALLY, we have an ALL FEMALE guard again in the top 12.

  7. Edited to add this last part: I recently spoke with a young gentleman about marching in the Renegades... He is giving it consideration but has a hard time marching with BD ageouts as he was in SCV... In his words, "I know there are some really great people that come out of the Concord Corps but I have been trained to hate them..." This was in the past few months...

I cannot find this more laughable.

I do find it disappointing that someone who marched SCV, who is in drum corps thought of as the hallmark of class and integrity, to be trained to HATE anyone. And, competitively, that's like someone being trained to hate the Giants who played for.....er, um.........who was the seventh place baseball team again this year?

Anyway, whoever this kid you are talking about is is gonna LOVE me...........or NOT.

P.S. NOT slamming SCV...........just tired of them not winning in forever............

  8. Things may have changed from my day, but The Bluecoats always got along with The Cavaliers just fine. I even remember sharing some retreat candy with them down in the Indy tunnels before retreat!

BD and Cavies from what I know have a long-standing rivalry.

I'll second the Crown and Cadets current rivalry.

I'm kind of surprised Vanguard and Devs don't have a rivalry (that I'm aware of), you know being close to each other and all.

Way, way, way, WAY back in ancient history, about 350,000 years ago.........legend tells of a rivalry between SCV and BD, which harks back to a time when both corps were on the same competitive level.

These tales are steeped in legend and myth...............no one knows for sure.
