uh, no not a fan of that, no sir.
But I look forward to more of their show!
So you're not a fan of their horn caption head based on where he marched, without any additional information about him or what he's capable of??? NAME a place ANYONE could have received a better brass education at!!
-
Gee Cavies......Thanks for the two millionths of a nanosecond of music. I'm really hyped on the show now.
-
I'm torn between Crown 09, Blue Devils 90, and Cavies 02.
-
WAY uncool...to pass on so young. I feel so bad for his family.
-
If only we could have had Jeff Gibbens pouring shots instead of hammering together coffins that year..............
-
The funny thing is Crown never had a chance at winning last year. Blue Devils were winning and nobody was beating them. Crown would of been third if JJ Pipitone didn't dump the Cadets drum line on finals night.
Hmmm....so what happened Quarters and Semis? Crown took 2nd all throughout Championship week.
I hate it when people dump on judges........certainly they are NOT infallible, but it's a tough, thankless job without which we wouldn't have a competitive activity.
-
'NUFF SAID.
2000Cadet is wise.
He always has been......however since he was part of one of the most awesome corps I've ever witnessed, perhaps I lend more weight to his words than I probably should.
-
I'm all down for hyping Crown........because they are exciting, marvelous, miraculous, and wonderful.
When did this become a "dump on BD" thread?
BD does what they do best, and better than the next...or the rest. Yeah, it DOES get old, but to straight up call them "boring".........well, I think it's more accurate to say that BD winning all the time is boring, but their performances are ANYTHING BUT.
Besides, I'm an alumnus. I'm contract bound to defend them.

Sorry - I guess Esperanza was a mixed line -

Mike
Esperanza's line wasn't intentionally mixed.........it was a matter of "gee, not enough silver horns.......we got these brass horns the kids already own....same key.......why not?"
Actually, that is a guess and I am not "in the know"......but I'd guess I'm right. Esperanzans, any confirmation either way?
-
"safe"....yeah, you should consider attempting to "mentally suit up" and try moving in and out of all those moving (and stationary!) parts with near perfection and re-evaluate your description here. There was nothing "safe" about BD 08 & 09. Nothing. But we forgive you...the same way we forgive Grandpa for farting during thanksgiving dinner.
GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont forget coffins
Oh yuck. Somebody went there.
Yeah, let's use COFFINS.....and let's use SEVEN of them, because.....er, well......um, uh....because......well....SEVEN! Yay, SEVEN!
And let's just approve them....regardless of cost...(and the fact that they were approved of and insisted upon by someone who never had to schlep them around or assemble them himself)...and the fact that they added nothing to our score...and think nothing of the fact that it cost the corps numerous hours of assembly and breakdown before and after shows and practices......and all the times our poor colorguard had to shove them around a field with every reset of a rehearsal phrase...
Gee. I wonder if there is a connection between the coffins and the fact that 'Gades ain't used props since. Not to mention the vampire graveyard tapestries that we had to purchase full blown temporary traffic sign mounts for...

Well, I don't know about "work", as in the present tense, but...
I went to NY three times to see Phantom of the Opera, and SCV's version astounds me even more than the stage, simply because SCV was able to extract all of the emotion of the love story, the hero, and the fear. And the music arrangements emphasized the hit points, while "singing" the ballads with even more emotion than the original voices. *snip* I could go on but I won't.
I loved Phantom on the stage, but Phantom on the field was just awe-inspiring. And is still as much so today as when we saw it live.
Well, consider the fact also that there was really only 15-20 minutes of music in Phantom of the Opera.........it was just restylized, rekeyed, and re-lyriced throughout the production.
Hope yer including SCV 88's version of Phantom in the "awe inspiring" category as well

Fair enuff.

What corps does that?
Not rhetorical. I'm looking for an honest-to-goodness answer.
Oh, wait. No one does that.
No. You're thinking of a corps that plays Malaguena every THREE years.
-
the results of the poll so far are just about as reflective of a definitive answer as I've ever seen in any poll, ever.
-
In addition, not to be a stick in the mud, but many/most people don't bother reading the question and simply see their corps name there and click on it.
I don't even know what this thread is about. All I know is I voted for the Renegades.
(Here's hoping it's not a poll for the "Worst Hot Dog Corps in DCA" LOL)
-
trying to avoid using the term "Crown of Carolina" here........
(whoops....too late LOL)

That's the laziest rebuttal ever. I haven't heard anything that you've composed, superior or otherwise, so should I write you off when you saw you like the music?
Well, I'm not criticizing anyone's compositional skills, so why would I have to show anyone anything?
Besides, anyone who doesn't agree with me is wrong.
-
So in short, i hate when people say well lets see what you've done better.
I'm not surprised. Armchair quarterbacks usually DO hate that.
-
Simply seeing the title "Jimmy Russo" made my heart freeze for a second...
...surely the title "Jimmy Russo is OK" would have been less scary for people to see before clicking on it?
In all seriousness, the fact that he is doing well and is still with us is good news. Glad to hear it.

I've actually heard (and played) a bunch of his stuff, "Aurora Awakes" included. So don't write me off as some armchair critic. I've experienced enough of his stuff to know how bad it is. He actually came to our school and had our wind ensemble play a bunch of his stuff, and the stuff he would say made absolutely no sense. For instance, nobody should ever instruct a musician to play past the point of good tone quality, even though the part is never going to be heard because every other part is written at "fffff." Also, if you're going to write a part simply because it'll make a good visual effect and it'll never actually be heard (his words, paraphrased a little), why write it in the first place? The stuff he does doesn't make any sense.
But anyway, to answer your original question - no, I don't think "Aurora Awakes" would be suitable for any corps, because it's a bad piece of music. Judging by your bold font and all-caps typing, it would seem that I've made another person angry over the internet, so I'll take my leave. I don't know where you live, but if it's anything like it currently is here, I'd recommend taking a stroll outside. Maybe throw a frisbee around if you have one. Have a nice day!
You're an armchair critic. I'm writing you off until I hear a superiorly composed piece of YOURS.
Seriously though...I'm certainly not saying John Mackey is the best thing since sliced bread, but your comments IMO are just ridiculous. I think you just don't like him, and the fact that you've met him supports that conclusion.
-
Other corps kinda have at least a couple things they HAVE to stick to just because it's their identity and I can't really think of anything that Crown HAS to do because of an identity, except maybe their brass sound.
Crown DOES have an identity. Everything you can hear or see them do kicks butt. The kicking of butt is very much part and parcel of "Crown's identity".
Can't wait to see them kick more butt (which they WILL) in 2010.
-
John Mackey is a terrible composer.
Yeah......that's why two world class corps are playing his music this year.
Seriously, what's your problem? Did John Mackey steal your girlfriend in high school or something? Might I ask what YOU have composed that provides you with the grounds to turn your nose up to his compositional achievements?
