  1. I am going to offer an opinion, and it is not going to be a popular one.

There is simply no large scale market AND/OR interest in drum corps.

People are always trying to be, like........since WE think it's cool, why doesn't the world? What do we have to do to make drum corps "mainstream"?

Mainstream, like Lady Gaga? Eminem? Def Leppard? Etc?

Forget it. Won't happen, and I wouldn't want it to.

Drum corps is simply too cerebral, too substantive to be accepted or embraced by our double digit IQ Happy meal chomping Survivor watching lowbrow American public.

Ever notice that most Metropolitan symphonies only exist thanks to private contributions from wealthy concertgoers? That the general public in NO way would contribute enough money to keep them alive?

But some dopehead can spank out a rap video and make millions?

Sorry guys..........the things that make drum corps great are the same things that will assure that it will NEVER become "mainstream".

And if it DID become "mainstream", what in God's name would that mean for the activity from a creative standpoint? Cause I'll tell you RIGHT now, I ain't marching to no god ###### Lady Gaga songs.

  2. :sad::worthy::blink::cool:

OP...you're kidding...right?!? Two words: MORE CORPS!!

One last thing...would  play jazz again??? My entire answer depends on the answer to that question. Heck...I'd even settle for Tommy--they did Godfather recently, I'll take me sum Tommy!! They're repeating their previous music, so, give us some Tommy!!

Nothing makes me happier than when I read love for our Tommy show on here in this day and age............boy did I love performing that show!

  3. Another thing I did not like about the jumbotron clips was when we were marching onto the field at Finals, they were playing excerpts from our Semis performance, instead of just letting our Finals performance unfold.

Kind of like sitting in a poker match with my hand displayed on the monitors above.

  4. too bad it peaked before san antonio...

Yeah. Gee, thanks. Way to contribute.

Peak or no peak, 2007 Bluecoats were hands down my FAVORITE show that year, and I was at the Rose Bowl for Finals.

Yes, I was indeed a proud BD alum and thought they deserved to win that night, but Bluecoats just rocked my world that year.

Rocked my world THIS year too.

    BLOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. but if we didn't have that and so much other filler after the last performance ended, could we not have a full retreat? Wouldn't members rather show off their pride and spirit than cheer for themselves on a video screen?

I'm sure they would, or at least those members of corps who's images MADE it to the video screen.

I'm talking about, of course, the video montage shown after the performances as a prelude to scores and placement that had at LEAST images of all the Open Class finalists EXCEPT the Renegades.

Now, I'm not suggesting that we were deliberately excluded, or someone's "sending us a message" or anything quite as ludicrous as that, but we were overlooked and I find that quite unfortunate.

Like that scene in Goodfellas when Spider forgets to bring Pesci's character his drink and Pesci's, like, "What am I, a mirage??"

    Upsetting. NOT deliberate. Just upsetting.

  6. Hello, DCP.

Some of you may have read the posts of, or heard of a person posting on DCP by the handle of "Art Bell".

This person has been not only making inflammatory posts, but has also been sending PMs to people on DCP. His core agenda seems to be centered around creating angst regarding the Renegades, and/or our competitive outcome at the 2010 DCA World Championships.

He has, SUCCESSFULLY, hijacked the "Renegades 10th Screwed (forget the exact title)" thread creating the illusion that Renegades were running around shooting off their mouths about getting "screwed" and what not, and actually got some of you to believe him and respond negatively to the Renegades organization.

He has also been planting seeds in various threads also seemingly with the ultimate goal of making the Renegades look bad, and to fan the flames of pre-existing anti-Renegade sentiment.

This person is, I suspect, either a disgruntled ex member of our corps, or someone with either a mental deficiency or just way too much time on his hands.

I would ask all of you in the DCP community not to lend any weight or credibility to anything said by this poster re: ANYTHING to do with the Renegades. He is NOT with us, does NOT speak for us, and I would urge you all not to believe a word he says.

    Thank you for your time.

    Regards,

    Rich G. Skare, Esq.

P.S. Moderators, this guy is really stirring up trouble BEHINDS the scenes as well via PMs, as well as causing unneccesary friction in the public forums. I have taken GREAT PAINS to structure this general warning in such a way as to NOT cross any lines regarding personal attacks against fellow DCP members. PLEASE do NOT delete this thread.

  7. So to me there was no doubt that MBI should have gotten the highest score in prelims (finals, it was close). They were on fire and Reading had a pretty sloppy show IMO. I feel it should have been MBI with the Bucs right behind them and Empire right behing them....

Did the judges give the Bucs a little more than they deserved because they had to perform in the mist and wind and MBI just in the wind? Seems that there was slotting involved for the top 5.

I would have just kept to myself on this but reading posts and talking to other people it seems I am not alone on this one, thoughts?

DCA judges NEVER give anything away.

  8. Wow, I would say some of you truly have missed the mark. I was a rookie and the Principal DM/Conductor (title changed year to year) of the Blue Stars, back in 2008 and returned in 2009. 2008 was the year the corps went from 14th to 8th place. I was a not only a Rookie to the corps but a rookie to the activity as well. I had just auditioned at Phantom and had got cut in the final round and was asked to come audition at Blue Stars, that was about the extent of my "experience".

As an organization, when the members see ANYONE that can come in on their level, work with them, care and respond to them, works well with the staff and admin team, and really has the experience outside of the corps to be a valuable asset to the organization, it absolutely DOES NOT matter whether or not that DM has or has not been a member of that organization or not. I think with multiple organizations that I have helped run or been a part of, staying in house for something does not always produce the best results.

I am constantly told by veteran members now that the season has passed how unsure they were of me until they saw the way I responded to them, how rehearsals ran, and how I helped the corps run and my first official camp. But I honestly can say it was not without the support of the veteran membership that I would have been successful. The key to true leadership, especially when coming into a new organization where you are the "leader" and from the outside, is to invest your time in those who have been at the organization far longer than you have. I have built long lasting friendships with these people. One of them was my seat partner (yeah I shared a seat too in the back of the bus) in 2008.

I have seen some terrible vets make their way to the podium, and I can assure you the corps was worse for their presence there. I have seen some outside rookies to an organization come in and do some incredible things there (John Lee and Madison this year). Anyone who has some conducting ability but a true heart for servant leadership can be a DM/Conductor of a corps and it doesn't matter whether they are a rookie or a vet. The true passion of a DM is selfless-sacrifice and a willingness to serve. You can hang my Jim Jones runner-up award on that, and the shoulders of the members of the corps that earned it for me. I did nothing without them.

    FCO!

    -JP

    2008 & 2009 DM

    Age-Out 2009

There are exceptions to every rule.

Congratulations for having/exhibiting the talent and leadership to assert yourself into your role as DM for two VERY successful seasons at Blue Stars.

  9. Why is that bitter? Bitter would be to keep putting time and effort into DCA and to continue to get treated the way they do. I think DCUK is would be a great move for the Renegades and probably a helluva lot more fun than sucky Rochester which was a bag of ### this year. First off if you are gonna be freezing anyway do you want to do it in what is an essentially economically depressed slum called Rochester or visiting Europe? Secondly, a lot of people in DCA and in these forums feel like its OK to bad mouth the Gades, so what is the point? I mean if the Renegades have to go in the hole every year just to make it to DCA just to not be appreciated then they should just go to DCUK where they will still be in the hole, but have a lot more fun. Finally Gary you are simply just being a jerk , you see even though the Renegades were not happy about their placement they didnt throw a fit...They still had a good time and a good party, but many of them felt that placement was a punch in the gut and people like you justify by saying things like "Their hornline was tired" what the hell is that? It's crap is what it is.

So when they joke about sending DCA the finger and going to DCUK you call the bitter. Must be nice to sit on your pedastool and hand down such judgments.

This person is only trying to create the illusion that Renegades are in here #####ing about this, that and the other..........and has successfully got some of you to respond to his words as if they are true.

They are NOT, Art Bell does NOT speak for us, and unless you have actually heard something FROM a Renegade don't believe it. We all had a great time and consider our finals performance and our season a success.

  10. All the Renegades I spoke to were stunned by the placement. many of them have joked about saying FU to DCA next year and saving their money and going to DCUK instead. I seriously think they should do it because win/lose or Draw at least they will have a blast and not feel like they are getting their chain yanked by the powers that be.

This......PERSON.....certainly doesn't speak for any of us. I've seen him stir up the pot before, certainly our members have more class than to run around saying "FU" to DCA. Yes, we were stunned at our placement, I was too. However, I have not seen the Bushwackers and as such I cannot comment on whether or not we were "screwed", therefore I find it a useless subject. Everyone else I saw (CorpsVets on up) had great shows and kicked ###.

Congratulations to ALL corps who competed and put their 2010 programs on the table, the audience loved every single one of us, and they showed us too. We all accomplished our goals.

But please don't let this troll put words in our mouths.

  11. OT here, I know, but for all the slings and arrows being thrown at Rochester, I have to say that at least for me, personally, DCA in Rochester, other than ridiculous airfare this year which was solved by flying to Buffalo, has been relatively low-stress. Now that may be because the Kilties are housed close to the stadium, but even if we weren't, parking hasn't really been a hassle, overall access wasn't bad even with the construction this year, and so on.

    I agree.

Rochester is/has been a great host to our championships, a fun place to visit, and I have enjoyed all 5 DCAs I have marched in there.

  12. At first thought I wanted to say promote from within the corps but Madison's drum major came from the Blue Devils and apparently did a great job.

Certainly there is a difference between rookie to a certain corps, and being a rookie to drum corps overall. That, and some people just have a natural ability to lead.

(Still prefer a veteran DM though...)

  13. I picked Veteran Member.

A Drum Major is a leader in an organization, and when leadership has already been exhibited by a veteran member who is looked up to and commands respect, that person is in a much better position to command the respect of an entire corps as opposed to a rookie that is going thru for the first time what life in that organization is like. I'd expect that to be an awkward position from which to provide leadership to members who have had more years as a part of the organization.
