  1. Pio @ 19th?

Now I see, you are a Pio fan.

    Academy@ 22? That's just plain nuts!

BD @ 4. No way, although I am no scatter drill fan, BD was clearly the best corps in 2010. No corps was even a close second.

X- Men @ 13th, sorry but they were not that good.

Blue Knights over Blue Stars, ah...no.

    PC over Spirit...nope.

perhaps he was ranking them using his personal judging values...which, is, by the way, what this topic calls for. I would have had BD last, and SVC in 21st or 22nd, but my judging criteria is different than DCI's...

My top twelve would look like...

    1. Madison

    2. Crown

    3. Bloo

    4. Cavies

    5. Jersey Surf

    6. Cadets

    7. Blue Knights

    8. Colts

    9. Boston

    10. Spirit

    11. Pioneer

    12. Academy

My judging criteria is how I was personally entertained.

  2. This is a drum corps poster...

This is a drum corps poster...

    2008_poster_smweb.jpg

    This? not so much

    event_nightbeat_2011_toc_300_poster.jpg

edit...I'll even admit these posters are for different things...2 for show theme, one for a specific performance date but...the visual comparative just shows how bad the TOC poster is..

  3. Who says the judges didn't get their evaluations right? No.

    HH

I was the first to say they deserved to win..they played to the judging sheets, and they did it just about as well as it could be done.

I just prefer the judging sheets more closely reflected the majority of fans' sheets...then they'd be playing to the fans, and not just the judges...

but..that's not the intent of this topic....

  4. I don't have issue with the design of the poster. But it's clearly a poster for fans of drum corps. If they wanted to appeal to a new viewing audience, they probably should have gone with a different design.

I think it's horrid...you just don't put blue next to blue, and then you have the lovely purple/lavender acid rock splashes in the background...

    blech...

  5. I am wondering how not judging the last two minutes of the show might help DCI corps become far more entertaining.

Would this bring more people into the stands?

This could also help judges by giving them more time to get their evaluations and scores right.

are you advocating adding an additional 2 minutes, or use the current time allowances and just remove the last 2 minutes from judging?

I like the sentiment, but DCI won't go for longer shows, and the alternative is only judging a corps for 9 minutes...(or 9:30...not exactly sure what program length is)

and for those that are gonna red score Mikey just because he's Mikey...grow up...really.

  6. Does anyone see the contradiction here, or am I still talking to myself?

Mr garfield says he has many issues, but a SINGLE ONE will cause him to quit. He has called himself (and me) a dino, with affection, lol.

Granted there might be a sum total of other issues that *could* also cause him to quit, but he has stated very clearly that WW (a single issue, no?) is his line in the sand.

    audiodb, are you watching?

Thus, garfield is a single-issue dino.

    QED

The issue is WW. The fact that other issues exist MEANS NOTHING...everyone here keeps INCORRECTLY ASSUMING that single-issue implies "no other issues." It's just like voting: "The candidate and I disagree on all these other things, but I can live with those. It's the stance on abortion I can't deal with." That's a single-issue voter. The other issues DON'T EVEN MATTER, since a single issue is a DEAL BREAKER.

    Logic class is dismissed.

if they add center fielders, he'll probably quit going also....wrestling midgets...wagons with upright double bass and a mandolin band....banjos...pink elephants and unicorns...

that's a lot more than one....

ww is one of his final lines...it's one of mine, also.

  7. Why is your definition of music just when "the majority of horns are playing"? I bet you the percussion was playing if the horns weren't playing. And if a small ensemble of horns or section of the horn line isn't music... then... idk what is.

a 3 minute drum solo is a lot nowadays...during the 3:09 that I timed, it was only percussion and possibly 1 or 2 horns...

if just one section of a corps stopped marching for 3 minutes, they'd get grilled on scoring. in my instance, the majority of the corps stopped playing for over 25% of the program...

    that's significant...

  8. There have been plenty of shows in the recent decade where corps were moving slowly or not at all for extended period of time. Maybe not 2:00 minutes straight but two minute straights of just music with no visual at a DRUM CORPS show gets boring fast. There are great moments where a halt or free for all stand still moments are VERY effective. Those moments where the corps doesn't move and just plays music can stack a great number of points in General Effect if done effectively. But the second you "require" something that's supposed to be effective... it IMMEDIATELY loses its effectiveness, guaranteed.

To me it would be the same thing as requiring corps to do a company front somewhere in their show. It ALWAYS gets a positive crowd reaction so maybe DCI should mandate that as well??? No way!!

why is vis more important then music? I can find shows in the last...oh...year that have 3 minutes without the majority of their horns playing...

  9. No "concert" piece. I came to see drum corps. If I wanted to go watch a concert band/orchestra I would go to the concert hall.

Besides, everyone who says that DCI is lacking music is clueless. I rarely generalize that largely, but in this case it's true. So I'll say it again: Anyone who says DCI lacking music is 100% clueless and there is no point arguing with that kind of stupidity.

I find this quite ironic...when I say "no synthesizers...if I wanna hear synths, I'll listen to my Rush cd, or go to a Thomas Dolby concert", I get horribly castigated...

the second statement is just narrow minded and puerile...

  10. OK, got it. You're talking about total consumption, not efficiency. I get the point.

So a 10cent increase per gallon is $1,200 more for the whole corps to do a 12,000 mile tour.

    Mea Culpa

yeah...George's estimation was off by a decimal point...a rather significant decimal point.

I've realized that no one has any kind of logical thought whatsoever...I get dinged a point because I spoke the truth...that proves that audience vote for points wouldn't work...really? no....really? look past your naive idealism, and look to fact and logic...he was off by $10800 dollars per $0.10...

  11. Umm...No, it works out to be 6 to 8 mpg for the fleet.

The bigger the fleet the more fuel it uses, but it still works out to 6 to 8 mpg.

Not sure where you get your figurin'. blink.gif

    8 vehicles at 8 mpg = 8 gallons of fuel every 8 miles....8/8 = 1 mile per gallon total.

  12. Show me the current DCI rule "preventing" a corps from doing a throw-back show design or even just a concert number. As far as I know, any corps can play any type of music they so desire. And forcing a corps to do something is (Extremely) counterproductive!!!!

so, yer saying a corps playing a standstill, with g bugles, carrying their tymps, marching symmetrical drill would have a chance at winning?

Rules are meant to limit the "anything goes" philosophy that makes most worthwhile pastimes worth watching/participating in. A corps that did a 2 minute standstill in this day and age would get ROASTED on vis. It's perfectly fine for a corps to have 3 minutes in their show where the majority of the brass aren't playing, but if they aren't moving, they're done.
