  1. Please Read Before You Post

If you *know* who it is.... please wait a while (not everyone is on here all day or even daily for that matter)

If there have been no Guesses..........Then give a *challenging* hint.

When giving hints on these try to be creative and just dangle the tiniest tidbit. Make people really think / work on it. Then wait it out a while before tossing another tiny vague tidbit...

C'mon we've got to make these last a little longer. PLEASE??

Also, any comments made MUST be made in good taste... this is a fun loving thread... not a revenge match. Please spew your venom elsewhere.

Please submit any questions and / or pics in their full size (preferably JPG format), with full description - names, Corps, Stadium, Year... etc. to:

    The *Guess Who* Mailbox

    Thanx in advance!

All that said and out of the way..

    Guess Who # 508 ?

When it comes to stories about this guy we can write a book!

  2. It was almost two seasons before I learned Stan's real last name. (He was giving me a hard time about my first name and that's when I learned his last name.... heh)

I learned his real first name when his mother was yelling "M A R T Y" and I asked Kathleen T. who in the heck is Marty? When Donna and I joined Sun I didn't know many Sun rookies were named after the drill spots they took. I don't know if there was a name for the "drill spot" I got in 75. :thumbs-up:

One of my nicknames I got when a certain someone (BassoProfoundo!) told me I need a nickname.... I remember asking that they (the Bass Line) just don't call be "Butch" (Mr. Anderson and I were not getting along at that time. heh)

That's when "Moose" was born.... (I might be the only one in Sun that had several nicknames over the years, and I'm sure some of them were not said to my face. )

"TennTux" Which is short (pun intended) for "Tennessee Tuxedo" from another certain someone's penning an infamous 1980 Corps walk-on write up...

Ha! Hey MOOSE ! I'd forgotten about that!

  3. No stories / history to share about Mike??

Well nancy, I didnt know Root Beer too well as he was only in Sun a couple years and was much younger than I at the time so we didnt spend alot of quality time together especially as he was in a differenrt section than I. . The only story I can tell and one that I will never forget, I alluded to in a previous post. Suffice to say it was a long bus ride, Root beer was something like 16 yrs. old and somehow got ahold of the adult cookie jar ( beer cooler) on the bus and ended up running up and down the aisle of the bus with projectile vomit,. I think we ended up beating the crap out of him afterwards.

  4. Not hijacking, merely a very brief detour into a rest area - has any activity outside of early major league baseball used more nicknames than the drum corps of the 50s, 60s, into the mid-70s?

Root Beer is just one out of hundreds of nicknames such as Pee Wee, JoJo, Pepe, and that's just a couple of people in one corps at one time.

As the Scooter frequently said, "Holy Cow!"

OK, back to your regularly scheduled guessing game...

I knew Root Beer, but honest to God I never knew his name - I thought his parents were Mr and Mrs Beer and had a strange sense of humor.

There are quite a few people from drum corps that I never knew their real name until later on. There were some years in Sun when just about everyone had a nickname and it was tough to call them by their real names. Some guys in other corps I only knew by nicknames and never learned their true identities. And then there is Stan.

  5. And nobody messes with Cathlene.

Always one of NY's finest, even BEFORE she was a cop.

    Great story.

Sunriser of the Year is a coveted title - I can tell you without hesitation that I never even got close.

    Nor deserved to.

Correct spelling of her name is Kathleen. To my knowledge she was one of DCA's first female tom players starting back in 1979. She played toms with Sun for many years and was in the inaugural class for the Sun hall of Fame when the corps reinstituted it in 2001. Kathleen has made a career with the NYPD working her way up the ranks and last I heard she is heavily involved in the upper echelon of the Police Union. Also she was drum major of the NYPD band for a number of years. A beautiful girl, great gal, and a Sunriser through and through.

  6. How many years was he with Sun?

I'm not sure how many years Ernie marched with Sun but I know he was around during the glory years and some. Like I said previously, he was a real strong hornplayer, baritone I believe, one of the fabled 10 iron mothers in Sunriser lore if I remeber correcltly. Ernie was a low key guy, I think he got the quiet man award one year, and I remember he was a little guy who weighed about 95 pounds soaking wet. Like I said before, we had a corps softball game during one season and skinny little Ernie came roarin around the bases and crashed into Joe Thompson who was pushing about 220 pounds and built like a linebacker. Ernie came out of that collision okay but ended up breaking Joe's foot from the impact, knocking Joe out of the bassline for the rest of the year. I ended up coming out of retirement to fill Joe's spot, 1994 I believe.

Oh and for a little guy Ernie could really pound them down, but so could most of the rest of us too. I guess he's not so little anymore.

  7. :whistle:/> :whistle:/> :whistle:/>

The "milk and cookies" moniker and another one... "kids and girls"... were given to us by at least one of our competitors back in the day.

But... as Tom has alluded to here.... those nicknames were not necessarily an accurate description of us. :ph34r:/>

Since we are in a different era now, and this is a public forum, I'll leave it at that. :tongue:/>

  9. Who ever scores the lowest loses?

In my opinion, nobody "Loses" , although coming in last place can be dissapointing, the opportunity for performing in front of a crowd doing what you enjoy is a "Winning" experience regardless of placement. I wish I could do that again.

Not nitpicking, I understand the jist of your comment and it's lighthearted intention.
