  1. To simply do something because that is always the way it has been done, we'd still be stuck on the discovery of fire. There are better ways to do things than they were done in the 1970's... let's do that.

OK, then let's do that. Right now, it isn't working. Want to have the corps do their own announcement, get rid of salutes? All fine with me. But the system, as it is now, is not working.

  2. Youth Education in the Not So Fine Arts?

    Ascend Not Quite Performing Arts?

Arizona Academy of Something that isn't Exactly the Arts?

BD Never Will Be Performing Arts?

There are much, much more creative and interesting ways to identify each unique ensemble than a standard announcement like they're stops on the subway.

I said drum & bugle corps is not fine arts. It is a performance art. It is a visceral experience. That is what it is meant to be. Trying to move out of that will ruin the activity

  3. You don't go to the ballet and have the dancers get on stage, start the program and have an announcer break in with...

"On the stage, from New York City, presenting their 2011 program Stavinsky's Agon, The Lincoln Center is proud to present.... THE NEEEEEEEEW YORK CITY BAAAAAAAAALLLLLEEEEETTTTT!!!!"

Is the audience ready? Soloist Ellen Bar, is your corps de ballet ready? City Ballet, you make take the stage for approximately the next 48 minutes"

First of all, drum corps is not the fine arts. Never has been, never will be. Second of all, when you go to the ballet, there is only one ballet company presenting a program for the evening.

  4. It really bothers me the way that some corps totally ignore and play through their announcement. I think the preshow ideas are fine and wanting to pop right after they are announced is fine too, but I find it irritating if not disrespectful to just blow through their being announced.

    What do you think?

  5. 1) at which show did Madison beat bluecoats by 3 points? I think I missed that one

were they getting higher scores at different shows? Yes-- big difference between that and this happening witht he same judging panel

    2) You'll notice the point at which they started dropping coincided with the addition of the full judging panel... and I'm not trying to be a jerk or be down on Madison-- Im really really not- .. I have my ideas why that is-- but due to their lack of popularity I wont flesh them out all the way- (regarding different corps having a higher.. or lower.. degree of individual execution-- you add on-field judges- that's going to hurt some corps [the ones with a lower level of individual execution] and help others.. just think about it)--- has to do with the details.

I have already corrected my error.

  6. Don't you think you're being a little dramatic? Madison is not fighting to get into finals. They're in!!! Let's look at this quickly; the top four are solid; Cavies, Cadets, BD, and Crown. 5-8 will flip flop until finals; PR, SCV, Bluecoats, Blue Stars, ok you can add Madison to this group, I actually see SCV finishing 5th. 10-11 Boston, Blue Knights. Troopers and Spirit are competing for the final position unless there is a tie (could happen). Now here's the part you don't want to hear or possibly accept, although Madison has had a great connection with the audience this year I feel the corps ahead of them right now have better visual programs. This my friend is a very good year for drum corps.

I guess my biggest problem is with Blue Knights. I enjoy their show but they are no where near Madison/Boston/Blue Stars, etc. Their visual demand is way down compared to the others.

  7. Don't get me wrong, as I love Madison's show this year, but the Madison Scouts have gone head to head 5 times this year against the Bluecoats, and are 0-5 against the Bluecoats with the average spread margin slightly over 2 points ( 1.8-3.00 spreads ). So where do you get the Madison Scouts " beating Bluecoats by 3 points " figure ?

You are right, my error. There was a point where Madison was ranked higher than Bluecoats, but they had not gone head to head.

  8. For the second time this season, Madison has magically and overnight dropped below several corps. Earlier this season, Madison was in around 5th or 6th place beating Bluecoats by 3 points. So now Madison was in a battle for 6-9 Then, in Madison, all of a sudden Bluecoats are beating them by two full points. Last night, two corps Madison was beating have flipped over Madison...in just one night. Reading between the lines, one could say that will include Blue Stars as well since the have been beating Blue Knights. this means that in a manner of a couple of weeks, Madison has gone from a middle of the pack top 12 corps to one that is fighting to make finals.

    What gives?

  9. non-ToC corps, like Boston and Madison, do in fact deserve fewer votes and less money than these bigger draws.

A sure way to kill off the last remaining corps. G-8 or nothing and G-8 will decide who is in and who is out. Welcome to Survivor DCI, we just need Jeff Probst!

In case you haven't noticed, this TOC has two corps who have never been champions and leaves out one who has. Coincidence? What happens if Madison takes 8th or better and SCV does not? Blue Stars are also down. Will they be kicked out and Madison and another be invited in?

By the way, Madison is a huge fan draw for DCI. Just listen to fan responses to their show and compare them to others. They are top 5 at least.

  10. I don't disagree with the sentiment of your post.

I credit George with lots, and I bust him when I, personally, feels it's warranted. It comes with his territory.

I just don't agree with his vision. I think he and his corps will be wonderful under a vision that is inclusive. And I'm sure he'll adapt to whatever the demand and requirements are.

I just disagree with his vision.

If it wasn't him, there would be others who would push the activity. The current crop of BOD members is a good start.

I agree with you. I have never doubted his passion, only his vision on where to push.

  11. Eraserhead, I brought this up in the MS thread already. I did not think it waranted its own thread even though it was odd. Up to you buddy. I said he wanted to see the show up close and personal cause they(THE MADISON SCOUTS) have such a smoking show. And of course they do. PEACE!

Sorry man, I didn't know you had brought it up. The mods can merge this if they want.

  12. I don't think anyone is expecting Blue Knights to do much damage (11th and down), I think they're in for a shock, I've got them at 9th.

I don't think BK has the visual demand to do much damage. Granted, I have only seen an early season video, but they would need a lot more to move up.

    Ready to get flamed :)

  13. Yeah, Mariano really sucks against Boston. He has 21 saves and 10 blown saves. That's still a 68% success rate.

68% doesn't cut it in the Bigs, especially when it comes to Boston vs NYY. George Steinbrenner said, "Never lose to Boston." He was referring at the time to buying out all the hotels in a central american city so that the Red Sox scouts would have to stay in another city. Now that's rivalry!
