The Defenders Drum & Bugle Corps has just concluded an incredible season.

Now you too can be part of the newest and fastest growing drum corps in Massachusetts.

We have a very minimal rehearsal schedule, one Sunday a month, and a small but fun filled performance commitment.

We have openings in all sections

Many New England drum corps are already represented in the Defenders.

Great people, great organization, great music!

Come join us for the new year!

  3. Thanks Mike - that would be Mr. Steve "Saint" Dorgan. His nickname being given to him by our drill instructor, Ike Ianessa. Steve had come to 27th from the St. Agnes CYO Band in Arlington.

Needless to say, I thought he was a "Saint" because of his abilities to make that horn sing !!!

Saint went on to teach the Rockland Defenders for many years. We marched together in the 27th Lancers Alumni Corps in 1994, and is now playing in the Defenders Alumni Corps. He's a real class act !

They called me "The Saint" because I looked like a young Roger Moore!

  4. The bari player in 27th who played the trombone solo in the 1971 Chicago medley used as the concert number was pretty darn awesome.

    Thanks for remembering Mike.

It seems like another lifetime ago when I played that solo.

Now I'm back teaching the Defenders alumni (and playing too!)

We just finished a great season and looking forward to our Open House on Jan. 15.

  5. Yes, quite an addition for you guys.

    You'll enjoy having him around.

And, I love his magazine too.

    You're so right Bari 1.

    Rick is a great addition.

If you'd like to see Rick, he'll be at the Mass. Drum Corps and Music Educator Hall of Fame.

7 PM at Florian Hall at 55 Hallet St. (Off Gallivan Blvd.) Dorchester, MA 02124

Hope to see you all there,

    Steve

  6. The Defenders Alumni Corps is delighted to announce the addition of Rick Connor to the brass staff, as a consultant. Rick brings his vast knowledge to an already fine staff. His experience spans (you fill in the number) decades!

After Rick aged out of the Cambridge Caballeros, he taught and wrote for many corps (and bands). The list includes The Valley-Aires, The Reveries, St. Williams Band, St. Mary’s (Beverly) Cardinals, North Star and more.

Rick is known as a music judge with a keen ear and a keener wit!

The Defenders will benefit greatly from the addition of Rick Connor.

Welcome Rick, as a musician and a friend.

  9. AWESOME NEWS!!! But....Has she ever won the Dream?

    (Sorry....I couldn't resist)!!

Good luck Defenders!!!! Can't wait to see you guys at the Lawrence show in July where I will be performing with the Caballeros!

    Funny!

I remember the Dream with the 27th Lancers.

I'm not saying the fix was in, but when they announced us, they said, "And on the Starting line, the 27th Lancers with a score of..."

I can't wait to see the Cabs in Lawrence. Hopefully you can put them over the top.

I think it's your turn (6 in a row is enough!)

    See you in Lawrence,

    Steve

I know of about 12 new people coming to the open house.

Add that to the "core" corps that we already have - I can't wait.

I hope Dave & Bob bring their video equipment!

Hope to see many of you there,

We'll be starting our new opener at the open house.

It's a great latin tune that's sure to please.

Drop down to the open house to find out what it is!

  13. The holiday season is fast approaching. I'm putting this out to all you brass players or instrument players of any kind. Find a Salvation Army bell ringer & ask if you can play some holiday tunes to help S.A. It doesn't matter where they might be. You would be surprised what you will feel like after you have played a few tunes. Do it as many times as you can. If you love to play and got some brass, play at a nursing home, assisted living facility, a parking lot at a mall. Just do it! I have had some moments that I will never forget because of Drum Corps, EVER. I have had some moments that have touched my soul playing at the places that I have mentioned above. Safe & Blessed holidays to all of you out there ON DCP!

    FrankieP. MSJ

    Well said!

We all got a lot out of drum corps and this is a way to give something back.
