Yea, but no one snaps like we did back in the 70's!!!
Oh, yes we did - back in the '60s!!!!!!!

These people all marched with the Spartans (Milford/Nashua, NH) back in the '60s.

It's a real kick in the head to find these people are gone. I wasn't expecting to see something like this for another 15-20 years. As you can see, the list keeps getting longer!
-
Someone said it earlier, but it still bears repeating: ALL OF THEM!
-
I still have mine but I did cut the name off backin the '60s - wish I hadn't done that now. However, I'll never part with it!
-
Here's a couple of pictures I dug out when I was home recently.
Goodfellow AFB Drum & Bugle Corps - 1970
Goodfellow Corps in a parade in San Angelo, TX - 1970

Its in my sig. The only reason I didn't march in '66 and '67 was that I needed a summer job and the (expletive deleted), (expletive deleted), had me on the swing shift (15:00 - 01:00) so I couldn't make the practices.
-
I'm in ! Just don't give me any stinkin' third valve on my Contra !
Why do you need more than one valve and a rotor?
-
I was lucky enough to see the USAF corps in '63. On a scale of 1-10 they were more like a 20. They were the first corps I ever saw doing suicide turns (head choppers).

The Color Guard has been Eliminated in favor of the "Visual Dance Ensemble" with all the Props and Costumes of such.
Most of these Highly Trained, and Perform to the Highest Excelance of that, I know.
But they are NOT Color Guards. Not to mention there are no Colors to Guard.
Hear, Hear!!!!

Aged out in 1968. Marched five years with the Spartans. Don't think many people switched corps in those days unless they moved house. Sad to see that most of the corps I competed against have folded. <**> <**> <**>
-
I don't think the draft had any effect of corps membership. I attended college from 1965 to 1969 and my 2S (student deferrment) was only valid while I was attending classes. My status reverted to 1A when summer vacation started. I was walking around with a 1A classification from May - Dec 68 (college started in Sep and I just couldn't be bothered to apply for the deferrment untl Dec). I'm surprised I wasn't drafted. The only difference is that I'd have ended up wearing a green uniform rather than a blue one.

Don't know of any corps using wooden poles back in the '60s. We used metal poles that came in two pieces and had to be screwed together in the middle. I remember that one snapped during the '63 VFW nationals (during the finals as I remember).
-
The Elks Trojans were a feeder corps for the Spartans in the late '60s. Don't know how long they lasted.
-
here's a few no one might know of!!!!
rainbow raiders
blazers
blue angels
cataract cavaliers
shawnee indians
townsmen
suburban Knights
melodiers
shoreliners
chessmen
Which Blue Angels? Danvers, MA; Renton, WA or another? I'd say both of them and the Norwood Debonaires as well.

Hawthorne Caballeros! Anytime in the '60s

H##l yes. I aged out in '68, but I do have two regrets.
1. Didn't discover the activity earlier.
2. Had a two year hiatus because I needed a summer job and they put me on the swing shift. <**>
-
...He tried to get us kicked out of VFW's in 70 because we had the nerve to make a Peace Sign on the field...to "White Rabbit".
When you look at the times and consider the VFW is a veterans organisation, the words "red rag" and "bull" come to mind.
-
The Peabody Musketeers used it for their opening fanfare in '62 which makes me suspect they could have used more of it a year or two previously. Don't remember if they played it in '63
-
Well I was 10 when I joined drum corps. I think starting a corps would have been tough at that age. :P
Agreed, but there must be adults out there today with the time, expertise and drive to do it. OK, it could be a hard, frustrating slog but the rewards can make it all worthwhile.
-
1963 Ok, my age is showing! C'est la guerre.
-
No effect for me either. My corps was based about five miles from me.
One thought however. If you live in an area where there is no corps activity, what about starting one?
-
I've said this before, but I believe it bears repeating here.
If you want to be a member of an organization that uses woodwinds, join a marching band. Drum corps is unique and to add woodwinds would, IMO, destroy the activity.
Drum corps is (and always should be) more than just a marching band with attitude!
